Just came across this video. This is a great example of how to break it down and explain to us newbies what we're looking at. Most of the videos out there teaching bonsai show the artist cutting and clipping but not really telling us why s/he is doing so. They use lingo like "first branch" and "second directional branch" but they don't really explain what all that means and how they come to make those decisions. Here, you start by showing us the simple but very necessary step of cleaning up the undersides of these branches before we even make any cutting decisions... it's that level of show and tell that helps someone like me who's only been doing this for a few months. Kudos, and thank you! I have 5 nanas in pots (three 5" and two 6") and this takes away some of the intimidation that keeps me from really diving into them. Thanks again! And well done :-)
I have watched many videos and have been doing bonsais for about 20 years. Your videos are outstanding and easy to understand. Congratulations on exceptional instructions. Keep up these inspirational videos.
This is so helpful, it's awesome seeing your decision making process narrated. I've recently bought an 8 year old bonsai that has an established shape though needs refinement, so was not super sure where to start. So thank you for this
This video was awesome. I'm wanting to start my own bonsai, and while I want to grow some from seed, I was thinking of doing something like this with existing plants first to hone my skills for the seedlings and this video was amazing.
Jason, I love the narrating when you are making choices and why you do them. Reminds my of Bob Ross the painter hahaha. If you want to take a little off the top, sure, whatever, do what you want, it's ok.
Subbed! Glad this channel came to my feed. I can learn from you. I killed my first two bonsai 20 years ago cause I wasn’t as serious as I thought I was (lack of understanding how to care).
Your work is amazing. What's are things we need to keep in mind for the first pruning and potting of Nana? Can we do pruning and potting at the same time for a first time styling of a Nana? Do we need to prune roots also when we prune the top? When is the best time to work on a Nana?
Wow. Wonderful video. I honestly got anxious and mad with all the branch cutting (because for me it already looked nice 😂) but really understood at the end. I bought a juniper blue star and want to make it into a bonsai, and oh man I’m nervous 🤣🤣🤣
Thanks for the helpful videos! I wonder if anyone can recommend a good video that shows the process of potting a plant with nursery stock root ball into a minimal bonsai type setup? I know reducing the root mass is necessary, but I'd like to know how gradual a process this would be to train the roots.
That turned out really beautiful! Not often do you get such a nice transformation in one video. Would you wait a season before putting it into a bonsai pot?
@@easternleaf Have you potted it yet? would love to see it in its pot. You've inspired me to not be afraid - to go out and have a play with a couple of nursery bought junipers.
You all prolly dont care but does anybody know of a way to log back into an instagram account..? I was stupid forgot my account password. I would love any tricks you can offer me
@Ian Gerald I really appreciate your reply. I found the site through google and im trying it out atm. Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
This is amazing. I would have been afraid to take so much away, for the plant's health, and not only is the end result beautiful, but you seem very confident with what you're doing. I've really wanted to start, for years now, but there's just so much information and terminology. I've kept gardens and have grown plants in a very detail-oriented way, but I feel like if I make a mistake in bonsai I'll have to live with it for quite a long time, when compared to other plants. Do you have any advice for this? Any resources, things that are important to focus on as a beginner, or things not to worry about too much? Thank you!
One piece of advice, if you have the space. Don't just get one or two trees, get a bunch, you'll be less afraid free to make mistakes, and have more success, and more enjoyment.
@@Dybs_ Second this, bonsai is a slow process so more trees will give you something to work on more frequently and not put you in a situation were you end up overworking you tree.
Hello Jason, yet another excellent tutorial. Keep up the good work Would it be possible for you to do a video on creating the apex on either a juniper or a pine please? It’s something I always struggle with. I’ve followed your videos about wiring pads but there’s not one specifically to do with the apex Many thanks Chris
Hello Jason, thank you very much for sharing your experience. I have the same tree however the branches are longer and softer. It is not not as compact as the one you have demonstrated here in this video. I wonder how do you get it so compact for such a small tree pls? Thank hij in advance. Best regards, Helen from the Netherlands
Hey jason is there any way you can do a video on branch selection of satsuki azalea .From the few i bought from you there are soo many branches the selection is actually really tough. Also maybe include care and where to prune back to. Thanks. And every purchase ive made so far all the trees are doing very well. ! Love your videos .keep them coming. Cause of you i started this amazing hobbie and just starting to get others involved . Thanks!
I like what you did with the tree. I think it looks great. But one question. The branch that you jinned… if you were taking a longer term view of the outcome of the tree, would you have left the branch as it was as a sacrifice branch for 2-3 years to thicken the base of the tree more, then jin it? Just curious. Thanks for a very informative video!
Good point Bob! That would be a good option if you planned on holding onto this one for a while or putting it in a bigger. However, I'd probably go hunting for material that has a bigger base already to save some time. I'm probably going to pot this little guy some time in February. Thanks for watching!
Sorry, late to party here. Great vid. Possibility question. Could you have cascaded the right side, then use the lesser left to create a small apex? I could imagine that having nice horizontal movement but my specialty is tri tip so... I am but a learner, thanks for advice.
I know you were wanting to produce a "finished" looking tree in one go, but I would have probably left that bottom branch on as a sacrificial branch to fatten the base of the trunk and taken it off in a couple years after a little more trunk taper was established.
Great video Jason. Thank you very much for sharing it. May I ask where a jin tool like that can be obtained. I can't seem to find one but the one you use is amazing.
Hi Jason, love watching your videos. Im wondering if you could help me in styling my juniper. I think i made a lil too much cut but get kinda scared to make cut at certain branch. I think the problem occurs because i didn't get the picture of what i wanna do with the tree in terms of styling, i have change the style twice but im still not sure with the current style, i feel like i break some rules with it with pigeon chest. perhaps you can help me with it
I'm very new to bonsai and have watched lots of videos by several different people. I noticed you don't use cut paste while others don't cut a branch without using it. When is it appropriate to use cut paste?
My first ever bonsai I fully styled was one of these, they have nice tight folliage. Do you think it's ever appropriate to move a branch upwards to fill in space? Or is that not really recommended? Thanks!
Wow, what a gift to turn a small bush into a true work of art!
I really love the way you explain everything so simply. I am pretty new to bonsai and you make it seem like even I could make a nice tree.
Agree!!

I’m sure you know this but I may have been tempted to keep the first branch for a few years to thicken the trunk base. Looks good!
I got my first bonsai tree from Publix. Never thought I’d get myself so into this beautiful process of creating a piece of art at the end
Great audio explanation. Thanks for sharing.

When you doing this, do you ever save the branches to make cuttings?
Do you have anything on growing medium and formula for proper mixture?
I also like this type of juniper, in my country we call it "Cemara Buaya" , straight translation is crocodile juniper lol

was the jinned lowest branch too high to be a sacrifice branch to help thicken the base ? --
