I raced as SP1 for a few years, still have her somewhere tucked away in the garage. Ported the heads, kent cams, carbon airbox which gives an extra 6 litres of air, removed the cam quietening gears, lightened flywheel, full akropovic titanium system with a power commander. 149bhp at the rear wheel. The old lady gave manys an R1 a bloody good hiding.
That's a beast of an SP-1. I had one with 130bhp at the wheels. Possibly the most fun I've had on a Motorbike was taking it to Phillip Island. Sold it for an R1. Wish I hadn't now.
The fix for the lazy steering - one line down on the forks, and a 5mm spacer under the shock mount. Completely transforms the bike. If you haven't done this, you're missing out.
Criminally underrated… I rode a sp2 for the first time a year ago and if I’d ridden one 10 years ago I’d have skipped a few Ducati’s.. it’s a Honda with soul and character
Bruce… I had a little chuckle when you mentioned about riding your 50 to Cadwell, as I remember buying your Aprilia RS50 off you back in September 2004 😉
I remember having read an Article/Interview to the man who was prepping those engines for Honda Racing UK for the TT and the like. The man and his small shed WAS hrc uk ! to the disbelief of one Senior Executive from Japan who was sent to inspect the "division" and thank those responsible for so many TT wins and sucess in general ! One thing he said about the new V-twins was that he didn't like to work on them as much as in the previous V-Fours, primarly for the size of those Pinstons and Conrods, etc. Those bigger masses moving at such speeds scared him a bit, at least during those first tests and races !
I was lucky enough to have a pint or two with joey in 2000 at the my 1st TT got home and within a week I’d got myself an sp1 and a joey arai helmet and I loved it for 16000 trouble free miles and my first track day at Cadwell should never have sold her
When he ses about the bike winning the World Superbike title twice - in 2001 and 2002 Honda went to the SP2 - the SP1 was only in World Superbikes for the 2000 season and Tim's got it incorrect about the time Plater's chain came off over the mountain - it was in 2003 they raced the SP2 in BSB then changed to the CBR1000RR in 2004 with Rutter and Kiyonari
For me it's all about a 996R or a 998. The Testa engine is so much better than the old Desmo. Plus the slab-sided carbon fairings are peak design for that 916-996-998 generation.
I had a ZX7 back in 1996 red & purple, god what a sexy looking bike but how did they make it so heavy. Still loved it toured all over Europe. Oh to be young again
I've got the '03 SP2 - uncomfortable, not to be ridden in a 30mph limit but out on the open road it's a hoot - plenty of real world power out of that peach of an engine, open Akra's sound throaty and loads of grins every mile.
It won the riders championship. It failed in its main objective that was the manufacturers championship. The last Honda to win the manufacturers championship is still the RC45
I was the sub-editor for Fast Bikes India, and had concised the Ultimate Sport Bike section for 2019 and 2020 issues Feels a bit sad that I'm reduced to just watching it on video now 😢
Pointless talking about a road bike whilst showing clips of it going around a track. The SP1 although heavy and sluggish compared to its rivals gives the best smiles per mile, especially banking it over and firing it out of a roundabout.
@@Team-fabulous Hence my comment as a road bike. On a track you won't see under 4k, on a road you often do. Try riding a road one back to back with an early 00's bike. I do, constantly. Don't get me wrong it's more fun than my 954, but it's slower, heavier.

Guys please keep reviewing the old classics, loving the series

I just raced my SP1 at Daytona. Still a great machine.
This is a bit of me this is..! Beautiful bikes.. I have a ZXR & SRAD, and love them both..
Glory era this, just awesome 🤩🔥
Which one do you prefer?

I have an O2 SP2 and a 97 YZF750R, both of them are completely different machines to ride, but I do enjoy them both very much
Honda looks the best as usual
Can you get the Mille on ?
Great Video, can’t wait for the next instalment. I’ve got a mint 996, still got a soft spot for the Big Honda though. Definitely my era of bikes ❤

Think that was tony scott.
@@Conii-vc8ef Yes he was ! Thanks. I can't remember the Mag. but I had access to AUTOCAR at that time...
I had one of them. Great memories with VTR. Now after so many years experience and so many bikes my favourite is GSXR 750

Awesome! Can't wait to see the rest of the show 🎉 great job!

Was lucky enough to see this release the first time :o) Great upload xx

Zx7r still looks dynamite 👌
Nice run down of the SP y/1, I enjoyed that 🍻
100°c? 😮 she runs hot!
Great, looking forward to the next one 👍🏻
I would like one in my dream garage,, as it's an iconic bike great reviews in this series 🙂,,☘️☘️☘️☘️ from northern Ireland
I loved that Boost Yamaha I desperately wanted one but I just never got one
Best bike i have had.wish i never sold it
This is great!
4 BSB titles for the YZF says a lot....

Was there a slipper clutch ?
Can you get the original MV Brutale 750 on?
It won the riders championship. It failed in its main objective that was the manufacturers championship.
The last Honda to win the manufacturers championship is still the RC45
Love it❤
💪🏼
I used to own an SP1 (W906 YER) looking at MOT checker I fear it may be dead now 😞

build your own. its what indians wantes i thought? 😅
Original 02 owner. I hope I never have to sell mine.
You should link a video of the pure riding+ sound without the yapping over it.
And the noise was where ???
I went deer hunting on a SP2 at 80mph. The deer lost, and the Honda lost as well. Me? Well, I am writing this.....
I’ve got a Mondial Piega that uses the SP1 motor brilliant bike, way better than the Honda.
Nuffin’

Pointless talking about a super bike on track? But firing it out of around about is more relevant??? Are you high?
The SP1 was never sluggish.... Torque from nothing
@@Team-fabulous Sluggish compared to its rivals. I have one, and a 954 blade.
@@RetroSuperbikes i raced a tuned one for a few years, still have it and it out handelled manys an R1 or GSXR....

Didn’t 44teeth do this a while back? 🫶😊
And?
