I do personally like Ponyo, but I completely get where you're coming from with it, especially after Princess Mononoke. I feel like Ponyo is one of those movies that's meant for super young children as one of "their first movies", if that makes sense

I love Ponyo, the scene where she is running on the waves is one of my favorites in all of anime.

Yeah i watched Ponyo and almost immediately forget about it. From the lowest of Ghibli IMO. Mononoke being my favorite together with Totoro.

Wow, you went from the single best Ghibli film to their worst in one night. That must've been harsh. The only Ghibli film I would put on par with Princess Mononoke is Howl's Moving Castle. And if you love Kiki, definitely check out Whisper of the Heart. It doesn't get enough love since it wasn't directed by Miyazaki, but it is definitely one of Ghibli's best.
And if you love Grave of the Fireflies, Barefoot Gen is a great pair of similar films. Just, you know, be ready to be super depressed after watching them.
Most Final Fantasy games since 7 have had very mixed opinions. I don't think 16 has gotten as much hate as 8, or X-2, or 12, or 13, or 15. The weirdest part of the response to 16 has been how calm it is. I haven't seen anybody ranting about it as much as the older games. People either seem to be saying, "yeah, it's fine." Or they are saying, "It just wasn't for me."
Personally, I saw the trailer for FF16 and thought it looked like some bland combination of Game of Thrones, The Witcher, Dark Souls, and Berserk. Like some corporate suit said, "grimdark is what the kids like these days! Just throw something together and rake in the cash!" I haven't played it, and don't care to. The FF7 remake is more interesting, but I'm going to wait until it's actually finished so I can play through it all at once. Although everything I hear about it keeps making me less and less interested...

Seeing how you like a full spectrum of emotions and don´t seem to be against a convoluted storyline - have you played Kingdom Hearts? The earliest games are a bit dated, and some of them only movies, but you really are thrown from highest joy and silly Disney characters to deep heartache and sorrow, and then back again. If you commit to playing the entire story that is 😆

To your question re: FFVII Rebirth v FFXVI: Yes, I've seen the heaping of praise on Rebirth and the denouncement of XVI as 'not FF enough'. Rebirth is heaped with praise largely because of the nostalgia people have for that entry (insofar as I can tell at least) while XVI was far more grounded in western fantasy flavor that most fans of JRPGs don't tend to share the same fondness for.

Not really, I love both games but Rebirth excels in many areas that FFXVI does not. It has far more meaningful character interactions, a larger world with a wide variety of content and exploration and despite the fact that FFXVI was developed to be an action game, the combat is more fun and difficult in Rebirth. Though that is just my opinion.
I respect FFXVI for going more mature and placing a large emphasis on the narrative and action, but I don’t think it fully delivered on either aspect.
