Making Power Hammer Dies for 'Black Beard Projects' - with Lock Mechanism
Вставка
- Опубліковано 12 бер 2021
- In this video I'm going to make new poer hammer dies for 'Black Beard Projects'.
He asked me if I can make him a pair of new dies for his new power hammer to make damascus. We decided to make them out of 1.2344 (H13) steel, which is perfect for this kind of application. It's heat treatable and will be perfect to use with high temperatures when forging steel. The top die also has a lock mechanism included so the key can't fall out if it should come loose while working and destroy the piston. The heat treatment and especially the tempering of this steel was quite special. I made two tempering cycles at 600°C for two hours. This high tempering temperature will make sure that the abilities of the steel won't change if it gets hot while working up to 600°C. I wrapped them in stainless steel foil for the hardening so the dies will be sealed from oxigen to reach the part, this will pervent building scale. The parts only turned black because of the high tempering temperature, which I later removed by sandblasting them with glass beads. I really liked the look of the sandblasted parts so I left them like that and shipped them to Black Beard Projects.
Be sure to check his video of our collaboration to see the dies in action.

Awesome!!! The best power hammer dies ever. Such a great honor to have them, thank you!
Thanks, I'm glad you like them.
This was a fun collaboration. I hope we can do more in the future!
Your Damascus was gorgeous even if it was a concept piece. Perfect use of MM's dies. 😊
Yo dawg! I hear you like dovetails, so we put a dovetail in your dovetail!
@@mymechanicsinsights
I hope that too. You two are basically my "go to" channels for metalworking =D
I have watched all your videos and am always amazed at your skills. I wonder would you be interested in restoring my 50 year old Webley mark 3 air rifle it has many problems including a cracked stock, faulty trigger mechanism, loose telescopic sight plate, all the screws are chewed up, it has no bluing so is a bit rusty, and the spring is also old, the barrell possibly may not be true. I think it would be a perfect project for you.
Thanks Peter
You have completely ruined these types of videos for me ... sure I watch the other channels but I always think afterwards ‘that was good... but NOT My Mechanics good’. Watching you work relaxes me so much, you make everything so perfect!
Thank you very much :-)
i feel you =)
There was this one time though, where he missed a spot on the oil lamp (under the wick adjustment knob). That made him go from "perfect" to "way above avarege". ;)
...And the horrible black surface on the dies after hardening them because he didn't package them correctly. The end result was as always excelent though. :)
@@HepauDK haha, that was just the tempering colors, because I did two tempering cycles at 600°C. Right after the quench the parts haven't been black ;-)
Same goes for me as well!! I often wish that My Mechanics could’ve done the restoration work on whatever random obscure vintage item it is.
Anyone else have no idea what a Power Hammer Die is but still enjoys watching these videos? 😂😂
Honestly, me😂😂😂
Hammer Dies have been used for decades. During the 1980’s, Power Hammer Dies became the standard.
I have no mechanical experience and no idea of what most of the parts that My Mechanics makes are for. But I love watching a perfectionist work. In this world where "good enough" seems to be the standards, it's nice to know that there are people who do exceptional work.
@@cat3crazy These are attachments for another machine (the "power hammer") to shape the material it hammers. That's what a "die" is in engineering: a part used to form material into a desired shape.
In this case the material was metal, but dies are also used to mould plastic and other stuff. They're very useful in manufacturing.
He linked to the video for BBP. You can see the dies on the power hammer, hammering some steel.
11:20 When he wrote “I bought this spring…”, he meant, “I bought some stock round bar, drew it out to the critical dimension through multiple dies, formed it around a precision machined mandrel I made, heat treated it, annealed it and tested it so that it provided exactly the correct amount of spring compression.”
haha good one ;-)
@@mymechanicsinsights The spring let you down, dude. Just kidding....
Comment is gold lol 😂
My mechanics version of hell has sharp corners everywhere
Haha
Sharp corners and, urgh, burrs!
Deburr all the edges!!!
And none of the pits are countersinked.
And you are not allowed to make a new one.
@@_Killkor that’s just evil 🤣
Metallzerspannen ist der beste Beruf und Hobby.
Ich finde auch :-)
The people who disliked this video are upset about the purchase of the spring.
Lol. We need to hunt those 19 people down and ask them wtf is there problem 🤣
....and they never had made a spring themselves, nor much else for that matter.
Time is money. It's faster and probably just as cheap
just fat fingers on mobile screens.
No no... They are not even upset, they are just learning the meaning of the two icons, so they clicked a wrong one yet their intentions were to like. There's no clear reason to dislike such a project.
As a metallurgist, it is always a great pleasure to see the use of the right steel to perform the right job and heat treated in the right way. Perfect job as usual 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Thank you very much!
Those little guys are so cute. Best friends forever.
This makes me miss my Machinist days. The joy of owning a shop that you know how to use.
My friend just asked "Who is My Mechanics ?" . His mom and dad should've made a new one.
Masterclass as always. Perfection !!!!
Love from India bro
Thank you very much :-)
I dunno if its the same term for metalwork as it is for woodwork, but I always appreciate your dedication to chamfering all of the edges
Yeah chamfering is correct. Thank you very much :-)
And the radius on the locking slide is known as a fillet. Fillets have a rad, chamfers have an angle
The plans made so much sense after seeing them made and seeing them put to use. Well done on the hardening & tempering. Who knew it was so tricky? This was a fun project to watch.
Thank you very much Vickie :-)
Man, what a craftmanship again
Really clean work mate. Thanks for sharing
Damn man, you are such a boss. I can't believe you managed to make two chunks of metal dies so beautiful. Artistry for sure.
The nicest power hammer dies ever made.
Thanks, I'm glad you like it :-)
Excellent work as usual. Blackbeard is lucky; I doubt power hammer dies were ever this nice from the factory.
Lucky indeed! Not even close to this quality of work.
Thank you very much :-)
@@BlackBeardProjects Love your channel too btw. Subscribing to your Patreon right now!
After a lil' drought, masterpieces start "raining" again. Great work!
Wow. I never new I needed it in my life , but now I can't imagine the rest of my life without mesmerizing beauty of these videos. What an artistery. Thank you for shearing.
Wow, thank you!
Showed my 11 year old daughter your channel and now she is 100% hooked!
Wow amazing! Nice to hear that, thanks :-)
Fantastic video and great Collaboration with Black Beard Projects. I love your collaborations with the other restorers. Great vid as always and look forward to more, 👍🏻
Thanks, I'm glad you like it :-)
Looks like a little mini Droid. Beautiful work friend.
So it's Saturday morning. Up at 6am. Grab my coffee and sit in my chair. Turn on the TV and bam a new video from My Mechanics. Perfect start to the weekend.
I hope you like it
My mechanics is the only channel I won't recommend to my wife, in fear of her leaving me instantly.
If your marriage fails, you could make a new one
@@BoredInNW6 good sir. I am not my mechanics. I wish I was but alas, I am not.
lol
You can "make a new one" wife.
You're by far the greatest machinist I ever watch in my entire life
Such beautiful attention to detail. It must be so exciting to receive a package from My Mechanics!
Thank you very much, I really do appreciate it :-)
It makes me very happy that two youtube channels that I watched with love are in a project together.🤗
Meanwhile Greetings from turkey.🇹🇷🇹🇷🇹🇷
Thanks for watching, much appreciated
Another excellent example of artistry in mechanics from the master machinist.
Many thanks!

Absolutely fabulous. Some of the best minutes idled away watching UA-cam I have ever spent.
Nice to hear that, thanks :-)
Another excellent video! The way you take life in deburring the sharp edges impresses me. Not only does it prevent you from getting a jagged cut from the milled edges. It also allows you to clamp your stock accurately in the vise, not on a burr.
I always deburr my parts after any type of machining or drilling. It's a very important part of manufacturing a quality part.
Thank you very much, I really do appreciate it :-)
This man is the true embodiment of an auteur!
Another perfect one sir. thanks mm!
Great job. I love your restorations but this project had the machining content that I really love.
Good job. We shared this video on our homemade tools forum this week 😎
The right person for the job. Perfect, as always.
Thank you so much :-)
this man single-handedly Keeps the file industry afloat simply to spite sharp edges
Very nice work! Came here after watching BBP video using these dies.
I love all of your work. But as a machinist I especially love this type of content. Keep the machining ASMR coming!
More to come!
The benchmark for this type of work and also mechanical restoration. Doesn't get any better than this....
Wait for it ;-)
And now its official, you are the master of them all....

I love these collaborations, you're all very talented and do such great work. Keep it up, very satisfying watch!
Elegant, simple, high quality work.
Thank you for sharing it with us!
Glad you like it!
Awesome, love to watch a real engineer working, makes it all seem so simple, yet I know how much thought, effort, skill and knowledge goes into such a task.
Thank you very much!
You're like the mother ship for the other restoration channels.

My pleasure!
Amazing workmanship! The hand deburring alone shows a very high level of attention to detail second only to the finish.
Glad you like it!
Such incredible precision, beautiful workmanship 😌
Awesomeness Dude! Your corners and edges are a work of art.
1st before I even watch more of this episode, it is so awesome that you can see what you need from those drawings and make something useable. Pretty cool! Now on to the rest...
Thanks again!
So cool! It's always special to see tools made. I really liked this episode!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
just another confirmation of your mastercraft. Awesome video.
Most excellent! I truly love your metalwork. 🥰

That's the cleanest looking dies I've ever seen, awesome !
Nice to hear that, thanks :-)
I am about to make a set and this was very timely. Thanks
Excellent heat treatment. My eyes are damn happy.
Thank you very much :-)
Nice work! The stability of the Aciera surprised me. I didn't know you could hog like this with good results. Thank you! Best, Job
Beautiful as always. I have lost count of the number of times I would screw up making things like that.
Thanks for watching, much appreciated
This is absolute precision
Undisputed level of skill good job 👍
Gorgeous as always.
The Glass-blasted surface looks awesome!
Nice to hear that, thanks :-)
Woww! Such neat and clean tools and machines..and out came a perfrct machined block duo..awesome!

Thank you very much :-)
Very nicely done and the blasted finish is a winner.
Thanks, I'm glad you like it :-)
Since I started watching My Mechanics, I have become very particular about removing the sharp edges from cast metal tools and musical equipment I purchase.
Simplicity of pure genius....amazing

As always accurate and excellent.👍
A new my mechanics video makes my weekend!! 🙌🏻 amazing work!
Awesome! Thank you!
Here lately you've been doing more work for others than yourself
Enjoyed your video and I gave it a Thumbs Up
Seeing those little arrow ticks on the measurements made me all sentimental, as I have used architectual ticks for the last 16 years after changing career path from machining (trained fitter) to construction (technical designer)...
Thanks for watching, much appreciated
You are so good at everything you do. Very impressive!
Thank you very much!
Perfection, as always.
I was working on a rifle part, and I found that the front and leading edges of a moving buffer weight weren't radiused/chamfered enough to not scrape and abrade through the tube it was moving within; and I thought of you. If I had a lathe I'd have chucked it up in there, but had to settle for hand radiusing and polishing it on a Worksharp belt sander. Love your channel, thank you for sharing with us! You're next on my patreon support list.
Amazing work! I watched this video and it completely inspired me! After watching, I went out to the kitchen and started to put together my nephews 12 piece “Bob The Builder” jigsaw puzzle. With inspiration from you, I’m confident I can have it completed by the end of the week.
Fantastic work 👍👍👍
You teach us all a chapter in perfection.
much appreciated :-)
The best way to start my day: my coffee and a new My Mechanics video!
Those dies were beautiful. Can you please make a video about how to keep files sharp? Yours are simply out of this world.
