Customizing a Graphite Thrust Bearing (Throwout Bearing)

  • In this video I'm going to customize a graphite thrust bearing for an oldtimer car. It had previosly installed a regular thrustbearing which unfortunately was too thick. Therefore the car had issues getting the gears in. We're now switching to a new graphite bearing, which are very common in oldtimers. All dimensions are identical except for the lower thickness and the bigger two shafts. I need to turn them down to ø10mm to make them fit into the clutch.
This is a detailed explained video going through all needed steps to get an accurate result.
I hope you like my work and the video.

It's great to see the effort needed, even for such a small change. I'm no machinist and while I have a reasonable understanding I'm sure there are enough of us out there that won't have a clue how much work those speed cuts you show take!
Also your voiceovers are brilliant, I get why you don't always do it, but it's a huge help for the more technical videos 😁😁

You are always right so I only write about my past experiences. When it comes to graphite bearings vs roller or ball bearings, I have to say there is a reason graphite is part of history, particularly in sports vehicles. Beautiful work as usual.

I was a flute player for 10 years and we used graphite to help the pieces of our instrument go together if they weren't sliding well. Because of the pads and cork, oil or any other liquid lubricant wasn't an option since it would ruin those things. I never knew graphite was used in a similar way in other fields!

Taking .002" cuts every time to get dead accurate on a 10mm diameter on a manual lathe is damn impressive. That's a level of manual machining precision necessary in aviation overhaul and repair shops.

      It's pretty easy with a DRO ;-)

@@mymechanicsinsights I was wondering why you made those 0.25mm depth cuts and each time you measured with the micrometer. Was that to better calibrate the DRO ?

@@mymechanicsinsights It also helps to have good calipers and micrometers. It would be a lot harder to get a diameter with a .002" tolerance using measurement tools that have slop greater than that.
We've trashed calipers at work because they start getting wonky and fail to repeat measurements or are wrong by +/- .003".

Once again very precision machining. Too bad everyone doesn't do things to that degree of effort. Even a simple part can be made perfect... Thumbs Up!
