    Congratulations, with that slant logo you waffle iron probably IS 100 years old.
    If you can find a LOW (for a gas stovetop, the high ones are for wood stoves) ring for it, you'll never have to toss the first waffle again. Plus the ring catches excess batter.
    But I enjoyed seeing one work so well with no ring!

      @ayesha36 3 роки тому

      I was wondering what the ring was for. I got one of these for free recently but it didn't come with the ring base. Is it absolutely necessary?

    I found that if you put the blender on high with the lid off youre not allowed to make waffles anymore ...

    I have a family member who has adopted the dietary portion of veganism. Which means he generally doesn't come over for Saturday breakfast anymore. I'm going to try this waffle recipe and see if he'll come over and try some with us.

      Vegan waffles? No egg? No butter? No taste?

    My folks had a square waffle iron from the late 1920's that I used right up to 2010 when it finally cracked. It even had a thermometer on each plate to heat both sides up to the right temperature before buttering the irons and pouring the batter. This video takes me back so much. Especially the sacrificial waffle!

      Once in a while, there's no sacrifice but only once in a while :)

    Hi Zack, this was fun to watch thank you. Flaxseed is often used as a substitute for eggs, but I haven't tried it. The recipes I've seen are 1 Tbsp ground Flaxseed mixed with 2-3 Tbsp water equals one egg. Let sit until it gels. That trick of adding oil before syrupy stuff is a tip from some of the best cooks in the world! I have a new Rome "off grid" waffle iron from Amazon (the Store) ☺ I haven't used it yet because of intimidation - I keep thinking I'll have several batches of sacrificial waffles before I get it figured out, but after watching this PROfessional demo, I AM NOW READY to attempt this heretofore unknown technique. Thank you Sir!

      Hey Cheryl, prepare for a challenge. I've been cooking almost exclusively with cast iron for a long time and this one took some getting used to lol. You'll never figure it out though if you never get started! Regarding the flax seed, it is a pretty good egg sub, also half a banana = 1 egg. I dont recommend using a banana though in something that gets fried-ish i.e. pancakes, waffles as the sugar in the banana will stick like crazy (learned the hard way)

    • @StellaWaldvogel
      @StellaWaldvogel 6 років тому

      I've heard of people using instant potatoes for an egg substitute, but that kind of defeats the "healthy, natural" intent.

      That made me laugh. I figure it’s because of the long wait after #5. Kids are used to doing their numbers all in a row, and he knew it perfectly when he heard 1-2-3-4-5- all at once.

    We have 2 off grid waffle makers let's go camping. Always good to see you brother. We have a puritan that looks like your griswold and a actual griswold. I have subsequently learned that puritan was made by griswold. See you soon.

    Lots of interesting tips here...heat up both sides on two burners, then add batter and close one on top of the other. I just bought one of these ancient cast iron waffle irons from amazon, I have seasoned them and now I'm ready to try it! Thanks!

    I have one of those Griswold waffle makers (yours is a later one, early ones had a spring type handle) and stopped using it when we got a new stove - the base doesn't sit on modern grates. I'll try putting it directly on a low flame like you did.

    • @ZackOfAllTrades
      @ZackOfAllTrades  7 років тому

      Now that you say it, I remember reading about the spring handles. It took a little fiddling with the flame to get it right but works well once you do.

    I'm curious why pumpkin pie filling is good as an egg replacement?

    • @ZackOfAllTrades
      @ZackOfAllTrades  6 років тому +1

      I'm really not sure why, I found it when looking up egg substitutes due to an intolerance in our house

    • @StellaWaldvogel
      @StellaWaldvogel 6 років тому

      Probably because it has a lot of fibers in it. Apologies for mentioning this in a food thread, but I give my Shetland Sheepdog a couple of spoonfuls every day so he doesn't get loose stools. Those are a real nightmare with longhaired breeds.
      I'm going to double up on my supply next time I go shopping and try using it as an egg substitute. Thanks for this.

      Zack Of All Trades Sure, but this is with milk and eggs.
      8 tablespoons sukker.
      1,5 teaspoon Baking powder
      1 teaspoon Vanilla sugar
      1 teaspoon Cardamum
      1 quart milk
      3 stk egg.
      Enough Wheat flour to make the batter viscous

    How do you season a waffle maker?

    • @ct5832
      @ct5832 6 років тому

      Like you season any other cast iron skillet. Q-tips work fairly well for removing excess oil from in between the nooks and crannies.
