Ryan Preece withstands countless aerial barrel rolls in wild Daytona crash | Motorsports on NBC
/ motorsportsonnbc - Спорт
The amount of rotations in mid air without contacting the ground was simply insane.
That would make some olympic figure skaters jealous
I tried to count them, but was so impressed I simply lost count.
Reminded me of Rusty Wallace at Talladega
I have never been an engineer. But I would say that it was a very good thing that that many rolls happening in the air instead of more of them happening on the ground, likely saved a heck of a lot of injuries to Preece.
But that final hit on the roof certainly had to rattle him.
@@benjaminlewis671 10.5 I think…
Never seen eleven rolls… never really counted, but this was spectacular because he walked away. Hats off to the engineers
No joke. Incredible what kind a beating the car took and for him to be seemingly no worse for the ware. Insane.
Christopher Bell in the truck race at Daytona several years ago barrel rolled 13 times
Ott Tanak has entered the chat
Yeah it was 11 or 12 times depending on how you count it.... but I think I saw the "#41" go by 12 times.
I thought they were going to eliminate the grass at the Super Speedways to minimize the ability to "Lift Off"...
It's just incredible though that Preece was able to climb out of the "Wreck" and walk to the Stretcher...I hope he's okay....
@@joeleyendecker5346 I didn't even realize the the window net came undone until someone mentioned it. It was around the 3:30 mark in the video
Those cars are incredible now. That last landing on the drivers side roof may have been fatal 20yrs ago.
Used to happen all the time back then, drivers walked away. These types of crashes rarely result in any serious injury.
@@DerrickRG91Yea, but back then, Blaney would have been dead after tonight’s wreck.
Yea kenny Schrader, rusty and DW and I believe davey all flipped many times like this violently. Theses wrecks are like taking multiple jabs but the instant stops like Dale sr is a knockout blow
the hans device has been the greatest factor in crash survivability in the last 20 years.
Could have been 4 years ago too, the Gen 6 roof like we saw with Joy logono at talledega crumpled alot under its own weight. Meanwhile preeces barely budged
He went higher in the air than Davey Allison did at Pocono an Newman in 2020.
When I saw it live I thought it kinda looked like rusty Wallace talladega

Preece has had some violent wrecks. Indianapolis, Kansas, Talladega, now Daytona.
He’s like new Elliot sadler
Ryan Newman-2020
Ryan Preece-2023
Ryan Blaney-2026?
Blaney had an insane wreck earlier in this race
Maybe he should stick to driving match box cars 🚗
@@Xane_Dragon what’s?!
The most violent wreck I've seen in quite sometime. I'd say he got more air than Newman's 2020 Daytona incident. Thank God Ryan is okay.
Agreed! Last violent accident I recall was Austin Dillon's.

I'm glad both Ryan N. and Ryan P. are still going strong.
I haven't seen a flip that wild in a while that was a crazy tumble
hey rick , i have not seen a wreck this bad since rocket man ryan blaney went flying at daytona the only other wreck i feel is worse then this is dale earnhardt senior , this wreck comes as a reminder that this is the unforgiving nature of motor sports

I am always impressed by how calm and professional the rescue team is.

that's the best case scenario when you're in a traumatic situation like that. Kudos to them
It's insane how strong these cars are
I'd like to see the roll cage after they do a tear down, see the integrity of it post-crash. Does it get re-used or is it scrap now.
@binaryanticommunist1882 with that insanity of a barrell roll. Stewart haas will not be able to use it. Even if it was untouched. They would have to replace it
@binaryanticommunist1882 the cars after a wreck like that are usually used as spars parts and stuff. Sometimes they would keep it like that as a display at their facility so others can see. But mostly they will use it for whatever parts that are still good on it and remove those then eventually dump the rest away.
They’re strong but anything but safe.
@Eeeeethan7643 they're definitely safe, we've seen viscous crashes that drivers literally walked away after with no issues. Cars in the early 2000s were nowhere near as safe as these
Scary seeing his exposed helmet after the hatch coverr broke free
I didn't catch that
the window net also came undone while the car was flipping
i got this on camera at the race, this was absolutely crazy. ive never seen such a thing like this since rusty wallace at dega. glad preece is okay.
post it
I remember Bubba Wallace's spotter Freddie Craft saying last year at the birth of this car that he was worried about the belly pan of this car. Aero could be affected by it. Not entirely sure if that anything to do with it but dang, violent for sure
Post the video bro
You should post it.
This flip almost reminds me of the Rusty Wallace flip at Winston 500 Daytona.
What about Waltrips flip in the 2004 Daytona 500?
Reminds me of Rusty Wallaces flip in '93 besides the fact that this is a blowover
Reminded me of Michael Waltrips flip in the grass in the 2004 Daytona 500.
Look up Darrell waltrip at talladega i think, wreck. Also.
@@billtmarchi4320DW had a violent flip at Daytona in 1991
Rusty at Talladega in 1993 was a blowover
Ok as a nascar fan and a Motorsport fanatic that had to be a scary ride for Ryan preece I thought he was gonna lose his life after that ride but I’m glad he climbed out of the car on his own but I pray to god that i hope he’s okay 🙏
The physics of that wreck are insane. I’m pretty sure he had 3/4 rollover while still in mid air. Been a while since I’ve seen something like that. We sure tested the NextGen safety tonight.
That was something straight out of the 80s and 90s. Hope he's okay as he's been transported to Halifax.
Update: he’s been discharged. Thank goodness.
And early 2000s.
he was kept overnight but he's conscious, sent out a tweet at like 2-3 AM
With these roof flaps, I never thought it possible for a car like this to get this much air
People consistently seem surprised how safe these Cup cars are. After twenty + years with no fatalities (and very few serious injuries) you would think people would be less dramatic. NASCAR Cup racing is about as safe as motorsport gets.
5 rolls in the air. wow
"use a single word to describe this crash" INSANE
Also, can anyone confirm whether or not the window net sustained any damage? I've heard rumors that it did. If you check the replay, it wouldn't be too surprising if it did bc the cat pretty much landed on the driver's side door where the window net is.
SO glad he's okay!
Not sure about the window net, but I'll bet NASCAR is concerned that the roof hatch came open very early in the accident. You can see it during that first massive set of rolls, wide open. It's a great feature to have, but darn if I know how'd you keep it secured during something like THAT.
@@Moose6340 I would imagine the way it landed on the roof may have played a part?
I hope he's doing okay 🏁🏁👍
2 Ryans crashed in the same race. Daytona is brutal.
And another Ryan in 2020
@@miguelbarrero5572and 2003
Shades of Davey Allison at Pocono back in '92. I don't theres been a flip this violent looking since the late 90's.
Elliot Saddlers flip in the 38 car in 2003 at Dega, Michael Waltrip in the 15 car at the 2004 Daytona 500, Scott Riggs in the 10 car at Dega (can't remeber year, might have been 2003 or 2004, maybe 2005), Kyle Larson in the 42 car at Dega in 2018 or 2019, there was an xfinity driver who nastily flipped at Dega earlier this year, and Christopher Bell's flip in the 4 truck at Daytona a few years ago are the closest to being as violent at Davey's in recent memory.
Prayers for him and his family ♥️♥️
Hope he's ok

Prayers going out for Ryan! Crazy accident! 😢
It looks like the grass is angled up at that point, and that lifted the leading side of the car up.
Correct. Not much they can do about the car taking flight when it’s hitting a launch pad. If you stuff air under a car at that speed they’re lifting. I’d like to see them pave all of that to mitigate that risk in the future.
the rear hit the infield endurance curbs for the chicane
Our first going to a race, this was insane to see.
Being there in the grandstands was crazy
The hight preece got...just awful. A very similar wreck to Bruce Jacobi.
Thoughts are with Ryan preece and his family.
"Mcqueen is fading! Mcqueen is fading! Fading fast!"
This needs to stop! As an insider I will tell you Ryan just received a miracle.
It reminded me of Davey in 92 @ Pocono!!! This was CRAZY.
I just hope he feels better in a few days. He experienced some G forces in those spins❤.
Ryan’s eyes were the same for some time afterwards apparently
That was eleven rolls. The amount of barrel rolls without it touching the ground is just insane. I’m glad he is okay. I’m super thank that doesn’t happen very often. Definitely common back in the 90s like jr said.
Man I counted I think four full rotations in the air without touching the ground I've never seen anything like that I'm so glad he's okay and these cars have issues
THAT is the craziest part of it to watch, honestly. Just wild.
The issue is the driver 😂
@@SUGAR_XYLERthis had nothing to do with Preece's driving.
He got hit and turned by someone else.
@@SUGAR_XYLER The issue is the grass.
Grass does not cause the cars to get airborne, the unmaintained ground underneath it allows more air to get under it! When NASCAR started putting pavement in the critical areas of the race tracks, usually back in the day through all the turns and extending several hundred yards after the turn, to find out a couple years after they started doing it, that the grass itself was not causing cars to flip or get airborne and then tumble. It was the unmaintained earth below it that was the problem
all happened so fast.. that was a scary one
Watched this happen.
Although I was simply watching the race on TV...I still was glad to see him get out of the car. And gave him and those who built the car, a round of applause.
Reminds me a lot of Rusty Wallace’s flip at Talladega in the early 90’s (possibly 93’ if I’m not mistaken)….
"I'm flying through the air, this is not good"
Oh my stars 😮. That was massive. Prayers for a fast recovery mate. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼Thanks for sharing 👍🏻👍🏻🙃🙃
The 3-360 rolls in the air at one time was unbelievable. Never seen that in this car. All the wheels and hood stayed with the car. Great safety measures.
Passenger side front wheel actually did come off.
@@willhorting5317 but the safety cable held it to the car frame. Unlike what happen at the Indy 500.

Ryan was upside down and got hit in the driver's side door but I hear ya, not a good situation. Credit to the safety of these cars
That was an insane rollover. Havent seen something like that in a long, long time. The car held up extremely well too. Glad hes alright.
Is there concrete under that turf or is that real grass & dirt? I'd love to see the roll cage and its status post-crash. Does it get re-used do you think, or is it scrap? Not an engineer, just curious.
grass and dirt. That car is scrap
If I were a betting woman, I would think NASCAR will study it first to see what held up, what didn’t, etc., then I think it’ll be scrapped.
@@lesliehatch-herman9325 Oh yeah that will be a heavily studied car. Its scrap for the team
This is something I would think would be in the 80s or 90s
Like Davey Allison in PocoNO who does not like him
That car just won the floor routine at the next Olympics
I know a lot of people watch nascar for the wrecks but man even if you’re watching just for that, that’s a tough one to make it through.
NASCAR has designed the Car Of Tomorrow right back to 1984.
"I'm flying through the air. This is not good."

Huge respect to NBC for not playing a replay until they knew Preece got out.
For all the drivers crying about the car being too stiff, Preece is thanking his lucky stars that car was as tough as it was.
That was a wild ride.

The slow motion view was awesome. Sooo glad he wasnt hurt.
Has to be one of the most violent flips in recent memory. Last one I remember was Bell in the 4 Truck flipping at Daytona a few years ago.
Watching live I was wondering how his water bottle and helmet hose came out of the car. Looking again it appears the window net latch failed when the car dug in and started rolling. Pretty crazy.
This has to be a Guinness world record for barrel rolls in a race car
Tremendo, y excelentes las medidas de seguridad!
I thought we witnessed the death of another great driver. I was on pins n needles waiting to see him walk out.

That kind of me reminded of Elliott Sadlers flip, Talladega 2003.
Such a spectacular crash, but what’s even more spectacular is that Ryan Preece climbed out of the car in his power.
I haven’t seen a wreck like that in years 😱
Its good thing Next Gen are strongly Enough to protected it hats off for the the update of it
Violent crash :( props to the camera guys that’s the best crash footage ever surely lol
This looked similar to rusty Wallace 1993 not sure which wreck
Both Daytona and Talladega that year.
Honestly looked like a combination of both. The blowong over and fast rolls of Talladega mixed with the bouncing and dramatic height of Daytona
And Michael Waltrips flip in the 2004 Daytona 500.
It’s unbelievable how well these cars protect the drivers
Most brutal Gen 7 crash so far.
The bottom of that car is so smooth! Great for aerodynamics going down the track but looks like a perfect wing once these cars get sideways and elevated.
that reminds me of geoff bodine at daytona. would "roof flaps" mounted on the floor have stopped it?
It is a great thing alot of that energy was disappated by the spins. What a horrible crash, i hope he is okay.
I've never seen a car flip that violently in a long time
That flat bottom is a giant sail at those speeds.
Ok what Preece just went through was absolutely insane but no one talking about the fact that Chase Briscoe also nearly flipped
I just noticed that. Definitely hopscotched over the kink.
i noticed that , they slammed the grass and chasey almost flipped over while preece went flying hotter then nasa space launch
11 flips vs nearly flipped.... you're right... There should be more talk about the nearly flipped guy. SMH. 🙄🙄
3:34 how many flips while in mid air holy crap. Never seen anything like that before .
...once the car gets sideways at 200mph, and comes into contact with something other than asphalt or concrete, no aerodynamic design can stop this aerial behavior other than dissipation of momentum.
I was thinking of days of thunder when the car flip like that
They say this was common in the past, but this is the most in the air rolls I've ever seen. Thankfully he seems to have gotten out OK. Can you imagine if this was your standard showroom passenger car?
In a standard car the driver is 7ft under... this is precisely the reason why a strictly stock division is impossible for nascar nowadays.
This was common in the past, but the cars had far less aerodynamic load. That's why I think there have been more rolls in the air now
Half one way, followed by 10 and a half the other way. Not countless, but definitely a freaking high number of rolls
Been watching Races That was Terrible Barrel Row. The Cage Row Bars Safety Did its Job. We sometimes get upset or Don't Agree with everything Nascar Does But Hats Off Tonight May GOD Bless AMERICA
crazy wreck
Window net was undone during the entire flip
WHo is this 43 car and why isnt it being called out that he bumped Ryan , which made it do this> WTF
Ryan Preece hits Kyle Larson so hard at Talladega they made changes to the car. This car will definitely be going back to the R&D center and probably result in more changes to the car, beginning with the window net that did not remain in place.
Ryan Preece is probably tired of being the crash test dummy for the next gen car.
It's like he's the new Newman.
@@scoke15 Newman only did it once. Preece has now done it twice in the same season.
Thank God he is alive. That car flipped over 17 times depending on what you consider a flip.
5:46 his water bottle comes flying out the window just to show the amount of force here
Such a massive accident. Reminds me of Marcus Ericsson in 2018
I hope he be okay
Did the roof escape hatch come off? I swear in certain shots the roof hatch looks like it's off
I counted 4 rolls in the air with no ground contact. Its like that underbelly pan just creates lift, ive never seen a car hover in the air for that long before
There is always a big crash at the 400 at Daytona
Don't watch then . Idiot. Blaming nascar. Stupid.
Reminds me of Rusty Wallace's Daytona and Talladega flips mixed with Ricky Rudd's Daytona flip.
That reminds of Christopher Bell wreck in the truck series back in 2016.
He would of gotten airborne regardless of the grass. He just wouldn’t of flipped as many times or as violently as he did.
