  • In this video I review my Oster 6 cup rice cooker with a ceramic, non-stick cooking pot. I purchased this cooker from my local Target store. It works very well with no sticking and so far everything comes out perfectly cooked.

      Isn't it fun to use? :-D I use it at least once per week, usually more. I made creamy wheat hot cereal in it yesterday. It came out perfect however, it wasn't as much of a set it and forget it because this type of cereal needs to be added to water already boiling. So I added the cereal to the water after it started simmering, stirred it a bit then covered and walked away. It was delicious and creamy! Thanks for watching! :)

    I just wanted to confirm it is okay/normal for the inner pot to be so loose after I put it in. Phew! We have had this rice cooker for ages as a gift, but we already had a rice cooker so we hadn't used it. Thank you for this complete and helpful UA-cam! This is my first rice cooker. I bought the Oster Waffle Maker with DuraCeramic, so when I saw this little rice cooker, I was happy to try it. We love the waffle maker, using Better Crocker's 1948 Pancake Recipe, so I now can't wait to use this new appliance as a rice maker and oatmeal maker! It was the only rice cooker offered at our local Target, still $19.99, in 2019. It's a good one, because it's a healthy cooking surface and is fast and efficient. GREAT review, and thanks again.

    Thanks for the detailed review, especially about the measuring cup. I wanted to point out that the listings on Amazon for this model, the ceramic pot, say that the power is 700 watts, not 350W. The same model but with the "diamond force non-stick" pot is 350W. Power consumption for me is a big thing. So I need to make sure. 700 watts to cook rice is too much power, my instant pot is only 650W.

    • @helpfulnatural
      @helpfulnatural  11 місяців тому

      I also have a review of the newer "Diamond Force" model of this Oster rice cooker. I didn't like it at all. They changed from the DuraCeramic back to Teflon, which I don't understand since most people are trying to get away from Teflon. I returned it. As for the higher wattage it had, it didn't cook the rice any fast than this at 350 watts. I still use this little cooker for white rice but prefer to use my Instant Pot for brown rice as it's much quicker. Thanks for watching!

      Glad my video was helpful to you! Yes, I always wash my rice before cooking, less messy and tastes better. :) And I always add a pinch of salt to the rice. :) As for adding oil to the steamer basket, I've never tried it but whatever liquid is added to the steamer, will drip down into the rice. I typically add a little of bit of oil & mince a clove of garlic or two to the white rice. It adds flavor. I do the same for yellow rice, but I also add spanish sofrito. @@helpfulnatural Disaster!! I just tried making 3 cups of rice. I used the little rice measuring cup and poured in just 3 of it. Then I filled the water up to the line of the number 3. I added a bay leaf and a small pad of butter to it. Then after about 10 minutes after pressing the level down, the bubbles were about to overflow over! I just removed the lid periodically , but i saw it would just keep cooking, so eventually i just turned the cooker off and let it steam.

    • @helpfulnatural
      @helpfulnatural  5 років тому

      @@c0mmment First off, did you rinse the rice thoroughly before cooking it? This is a very important step because the excess starch on the rice grains swell in the cooking water and become very gummy and foamy, which will cause it to boil over. Also, the cooker should click to the 'keep warm' function when the water has been cooked away/absorbed by the rice. It will not click over until all the water has been absorbed. Hope this helps. :)

      @@helpfulnatural Hi thank you for the fast reply. I did not rinse the rice because I am using Riceland Rice which is enriched with vitamins. The instructions say "do not rinse before or drain after cooking."
      I guess that caused the water to be very foamy which causes the water to swell like you said :(
      I turned it off but I haven't lifted the lid yet. I think there will still be water in it based on what you said. Let's see....

    I wanted to post a tip about rinsing rice. When I make over one oster cup of rice I just add water to to rice in the pot and swirl it around, usually two times. Surprisingly, if you just tip the pot and drain out the water it doesn't drip all down the bottom of the bowl as you would think it would. One less thing to wash.

    Hello, what am I missing? I finally used it today and the rice on the bottom was burnt and it was stuck. I rinsed the rice first, used one cut of rice using the plastic cup it came with and filled it to the 1 line inside. But I did use chicken broth instead of water. It seems like it cooked too long and not enough water. Thanks

    • @helpfulnatural
      @helpfulnatural  3 роки тому +2

      It sounds like you may have needed more water. Was the rice cooked completely? Sometimes cooking the smallest quantity can be a bit tricky in that the liquid can evaporate too quickly. Cooking rice in broth is a great way to add more flavor. Next time, keep an eye on it and add a little bit of plain water to the pot if needed. If I need to add more water, I usually add it when the liquid is no longer on top of the rice. Start out adding just 1/2 cup, then add more only if needed. Hope this helps. :)

    I received my Oster 6 cup today. I followed the instructions to the "T" and I did not have your same experience.
    I wash one cup of rice five times until the water was clear. I put one cup of brown rice into the pot, and I added one cup of water. I did use the Oster cup.
    The water came to a fierce, rapid boil. Within 20 minutes the water had cooked all the way down, and the rice was still very hard, it had not even softened any. So, I added water, enough to cover the rice. Again, within 20 minutes, the water cooked down. This time the rice had softened some, but still not done. What did I do? 😄 That was a total of 40 minutes.
    So, I added yet more water, covering the rice again, and I waited another 20 minutes. That's 60 minutes. I'm thinking maybe third time is a charm. lol
    By now, the rice has turned from brown to white and looks a hit mess. 😳 🤣 I gave up. I'll try again tomorrow. This time, I'll use one cup of rice and three cups of water from the start. I don't know what else to do. Advice anyone? I would appreciate the help. Thanks! 🤗

    • @helpfulnatural
      @helpfulnatural  3 роки тому +2

      The rice cup is only for measuring the rice, not the water. The lines inside the cooking pot are for measuring the water. They are marked with numbers 1, 2, and 3. If you add 1 rice up of rice, fill with water to the number 1 line. If you add 2 cups of rice, add water to the number 2 line, etc... Brown rice does sometimes need a little more water due to the bran being intact requiring a longer cooking time.

      If you add one cup of rice using the cup that came with the rice cooker, you would then add water to the pot up to the "1" line.

Just curious because I’m having a hard time when a recipe calls for 8 oz of rice but these things need the rice measured by cups to get a good rice to water ratio :/

    • @helpfulnatural
      @helpfulnatural  5 років тому +1

      As I covered in the video, the plastic rice cup does not measure 8 oz. It holds approximately 3/4 cup. I use the rice cooker cup as servings rather than exact measurements. So each cup of dry rice is about 1 serving. Remember that each cup will double in volume after its cooked.

      I don't see why you couldn't make pork buns in the steamer basket. The basket is bare aluminum, not coated with nonstick so if the dough is sticky you could line it with some parchment paper. As for recipes, there are many, many here on UA-cam among other websites. I don't own any cookbooks specific to rice cookers.
