That was actually a DVD drive. I had one of these in High School. I now only have the hard disk from it (I forgot what finally died on it but I tossed it a few years ago). I played a lot of games on this thing for sure - lots of LAN parties at the time - I was the only one running a laptop! I liked the track stick on these. I wish I still had it (and it working). I do have a VAIO laptop with nearly identical specs from that era (a 2003 model, P4 1000mhz, 512mb ram)) left though (was actually playing some Age of Empires on it yesterday).
This is the laptop I wanted back in the day as I graduated high school. Unfortunately I was in a position no where near to afford one and I ended up getting one on eBay at $75. Aside from the Geforce2go, one of the things I really like about this unit is Dell has a complete service manual easily online. You can basically take this thing entirely apart with their instructions. Also I really like how there were different colored palm rest inserts with this.
Very cool! Good to see I’m not the only one who thinks the Inspiron 8000 series machine are some of the best early 2000s laptops ever made. Not just for games either, they are great at everything from that era. You did forget to mention one of the machines nicest features though; the incredible 1600 x 1200 resolution display :)
This is probably the strongest point, apart from that the GF2 MX bottlenecks the crap out of the CPU, so those 1600x1200 is probably effectively 800x600 anyway :/
I bought one of these from my local thrift store a year or two ago. It's a beautifully designed machine. I love collecting old computers/laptops, but it can take up a lot of space so I occasionally put them out on the lawn with a free sign for someone else to enjoy. :)
I have one of those in my storage space but only checked it booted when I bought it on eBay almost a decade ago. Wonder if it is still alive or if the NiCad clock battery will have leaked and killed it. Don't know where the power supply with that very proprietary plug is, though.
Great video, I own a slightly newer Latitude C840 but is almost identical to this system, save for a 2.4GHz P4-M and 64MB GeForce 4 Go 440. I believe the blanking plate is actually a wireless antenna for the Wi-Fi option fitted to certain models. Unfortunately the fans on these tend to go bad, so getting spares is a pretty good idea.
I got Dell Latitude C640 that's has Pentium 4 clocked at 1.7 GHz with XP but Steam takes forever to load like 20 mins to get to my game list. I was wondering if you have that problem? I'm not sure if having 2k games in my library contributes to it but I have other low powered devices that has no problems with Steam.
I don't use steam on this laptop, I've just collected original discs and use those to install my games. I've never actually tried steam on a computer this old...
It was a great device, I loved the excellent screen. Besides old windows games, you can still run a current Linux system on it, like antiX. For backups I used 100 MB zip drives - does anyone still remember?
haha small world, I saw your video on the M6700 month ago, and now I bought a mint condition C810 which is the same as the inspiron 8100 :) I'm looking to upgrade the gpu to a Quadro4 700Go GL from the precision M50 and the cpu to a Pentium 1.33GHz :D
hey guys, is this machine worth 100 euros (its maybe a 110USD) with shipping and a bag and some more goodies in your opinion - i could get that at a pretty complete package, thank you in advance
The 8200 with the ATI mobility 9000 card is WAYYYY better, that is if you can find it. Also these machines need a complete tear down to replace the northbridge thermal pad on the underside of the system board. Not for the faint of heart, a good 5,6 hour job if you clean all the other parts.
Userinit.exe (0xc000012d) I physically can’t boot this PC up. I was 2 years old when it came out. Any help would be appreciated mate. I’m just tryna see if there is any pictures my mom used to have still on here
Sounds like windows is corrupted. If you've got the optional floppy disk drive you could boot to DOS with an MSDOS Boot Floppy and burn everything you need to a CD-R. Otherwise, you'll have to take out the hard drive, put it in a working computer as a secondary drive, and copy over what you need. There's also a way to boot Windows XP from a CD, and you could then copy over what you need to a USB drive, but it's been years since I've done it and I don't really remember how.
I got one in well condition. -upgraded it with 512Mb of RAM. I use WinXP on it, and firsthad to reset WINSOCK to make it usable with a modern Router (LAN) for Internet. And out of hell, it has!!! the power to surf up to day! What a BEAST...true. But, I want to upgrade the inbuilt "GForce2 16MB" through a GeForce 4 440, an ATI Radeon 9000 (M9) or Quadro.. Anyone here could give me a hint, where to get one of these today? Edit: HEHE, I have installed UT, Quake3 and Blade Runner this night for finest retro, too ;)
Great laptop in a great condition. Few notes: it's GeForce 2 Go (like "GeForce on the Go" and not Gee Oh) and the best laptop for retro games ever made is considered to be IBM ThinkPad T42p with it's Pentium M 2.0 and ATI FireGL T2 128MB, 1600x1200 IPS display and full Win9x and Win2K/XP support.

Thank you for this. Its design (as well as the design of the other laptops in the Dell Inspiron 8000 series) reminds me of the SEGA Saturn.
you make amazing videos. i can tell a lot of effort is put in to these. you deserve more subs :)

I should also mention that I love the look of them too! They look very sharp and professional in my opinion.
Just watched this video again, and you *did* mention the 1600 x 1200 display. Can’t believe I missed that the last time! Sorry about that!

This was my first laptop.
It IR port wasn't optional or modular. It was behind the dark plastic piece on the hard drive access panel.
Also the keyboard isn't mechanical. It still uses rubber domes, it just has a scissor mechanism to guide them up and down to save space.
I'm hoarding old laptops. Is that a problem? I love old laptops.
I found an old one of these and I keep getting “load error 3” but I can’t seem to find out what this is or how to fix it. Anyone can help?
@griffen sander
It appears your refresh rate is capped at 50hz
It's there a similar modern laptop? I used to have one. I loved its keyboard.
I have one of those in my storage space but only checked it booted when I bought it on eBay almost a decade ago. Wonder if it is still alive or if the NiCad clock battery will have leaked and killed it. Don't know where the power supply with that very proprietary plug is, though.
Great laptop, i'm using one now. Is there a reason you have Windows XP instead of 98 SE installed?

@@griffensander Ah, okay. I thought my hdd is dieing for a sec. Look like I would be grabing drm free ver. of my games then. Nice edit btw
Hello, what is the name of this game? 3:14
It's the original Unreal Tournament.
It was a great device, I loved the excellent screen. Besides old windows games, you can still run a current Linux system on it, like antiX. For backups I used 100 MB zip drives - does anyone still remember?
Awesome
Thank you
hmm I was just about to give this old laptop away and now I think I should keep it!
You could always sell it on eBay if you have no real use for it.
Just dug mine out of the garage today, booted it up, and it runs great. Now if I could only remember my password... lol.

Is dell inspiron 8200 good too?
Yes, that one has a Pentium 4 and a better GPU.

eBay is probably the only place you'll find replacement parts for it nowadays.
@@griffensander thx for Your responding Griffin Sander.
I know, but "sadly" a used 8100 costs much more than a single Quadro @ the Bay. Sad :(
I have this laptop
Me too :)
Nfs 3? Lmao, what does that require, a Pentium 200 MMX? Of course it runs smooth...

turn the stupid music off. it does not suit the topic of this old computer.
