Bruce McLaren Pt. I - Why the Fastest Cars in the World are Named After this Guy - Past Gas #26-27
Вставка
- Опубліковано 14 жов 2024
- We all know the McLaren supercars like the Senna, P1, and 720s. But where did the company that built their beauties get their start? We begin our series on Bruce McLaren, one of Motorsport’s most influential figures, with his early life on the small island nation of New Zealand. Bruce had a rough start, as a kid he was confined to a hospital bed for two years. His time in the hospital taught him great academic discipline, a skill which assisted in the meticulous construction of his race cars later on. Join us in this, TWO PARTER, as we explore Bruce’s early days of racing: from building a hillclimb car with his dad, to his journey to his entrance into Formula 1 and all the crashes and bashes along the way!

No ones going to acknowledge how great James is looking? NOT EVEN HEART ATTACKS CAN STOP THIS MAN
COCAINE!
"I'm not the guy from the bar in deadpool"
Thats exactly what the guy from the bar in deadpool would say.
i always wait for these podcasts, especially since james came back and this new guy joined. watched every one so far, gonna watch every one that comes out!
Joe is hilarious, he has been working for Donut for a long time.
Dude their energy is exacly what we need right now. 3 is a good number, Triforce style. N64 anyone?
Loved this podcast, Bruce was an amazing racer and engineer. It really made me a proud New Zealander.
Great accent attempt too. Rem-u-where-ra
I’m surprised these podcasts aren’t more popular, you guys do a really good job with it 👍
I love how James has covered the Apple logo on his MacBook with ‘DELL’ written on a paper.

I've been waiting for you to do this podcast...
Bruce Mclaren, John Britten and Burt Munroe... All have great new zealand motorsports stories...
Cheers boys
And always, the forgotten or less known even to kiwis... the modern day living legend Bruce Anstey. 🏁🇳🇿🏁
what about Chris Amon
? His notorious bad luck would make an interesting podcast.
Rod Millen, Possum Bourne, Mad Mike for the population base so many motorsport legends. Massively underappreciated with no govt funding.
It's pronounced "Rem-you-era" XD
Also, hello from New Zealand!
Kurt Eichmann was just about to chuck that in 😂😂😂😂
And have to say your kiwi accent is "piss poor" but entertaining all the same🤣😆
@@deanstevenson7517 piss poor is a understatement to me its a piss poor Aussie accent 😆
It's more Rè-moo-èra roll the Rs
Pretty sure how to dad explains our accent, they should check it out 😂😂
Two of the Can Am cars are still around in Nz and they still get taken out racing it's awesome watching them knowing what a piece of history they are
Please add pictures of the cars and tracks while you guys talk
It will make the podcast a lot better
tbh whenever they mention a car, i just open a new tab and look at it, they are after all just talking, you are going to miss anything visually. Usually I know most of the cars they mention, but I had to see what a midget sprint car looked like lol
Shinigami it just sucks for Mobil users
@@broganslayton8727 Mobil Oil users..?
Brogan Slayton I'm more of a Valvoline myself.
The elusive Chupacabra lol I have dum
You guys are my favorite you tubers, hope u gouts are doing well
I LOVE this podcast, it is such a pleasure to play this at work and just learn about cars and cool ass people
If you like digging big holes, not TJ Miller, former British colonies and boy trains...then you're gonna' love this episode!!!
...but seriously, good show. Love it.
Your podcasts are one of my favorite things in the world. They join my rotation of your other fine Donut content, old top gear UK, old top gear USA, and The Grand Tour. I honestly hope you guys can stick together and keep this and more going for a long long time. Thank you!
Y’all keep putting out amazing content. James you’re looking great my dude after everything brother. Also great accent 😂
Awesome channel guys! Listen every week in the shop, keep up the great work!
Hey, I scrolled comments for like 15 minutes and never reached the end. Anyway, my comment was a kudos on the Irish and Whiskey comment. At one time Ireland was very divided; they still are, but over time, starting with Ronald Regan and making real progress with President Clinton sending George Mitchell to negotiate peace in Ireland, it finally happened; disarmament and case fire. Being able to pass to Northern Ireland without guard post greatly eased tensions. Side note: Brexit fighting for no borders in Ireland is good for all parties. I’m from the States and I’ve been to Ireland and I have to say, it’s awesome to visit. I’ve been all around Europe and in Ireland; when they hear the American accent, they treat you like family. All families in Ireland were affected by the Famine, and when they hear the American accent, they know you are coming home. The Irish are awesome. By the way, my family is from the south - Between Tullow and Kilkenny and I drink Jameson and Bushmills.
Do a podcast on Jim Clark! That would be awesome.
Bro it’s insane how late they do suggestions, they did a Jim Clark episode like 3 years late 😂😂😂
Love the series! Any chance you guys could put up pictures of the cars you talk about for UA-cam viewers??
Just found the podcasts last week and been binging it at work! Always love the New Zealand shout-outs whenever we're mentioned, keen on some more kiwi themed automotive history. Keep up the good work!
Holy shit. The bit at the beginning about the wheelchair races reminded me of something I did. I broke my back in 2008 which left me paralyzed and while I was in the hospital recovering there was another kid there who was a year or two younger than me and he had also been paralyzed from an injury. I’m paralyzed from the waist down while he was paralyzed from the chest down. He was in a motorized wheelchair and I was in a manual one. We would race around the physical therapy gym that was in the facility we were in. He always beat me though because the wheelchair he was in was really fucking fast and all he had to do was push the joystick control to go, while I had to push with my arms in my manual chair and I was still recovering from my back surgery and was barely able to balance myself enough to sit on the edge of a bed. We drove the nurses and therapists crazy with our racing and pranks. I’m sure they were terrified we were going to hurt ourselves even more than we already were. We helped each other get through a lot of shit though. He was a good dude. I lost touch with him about 6 months after I was released from that facility. Now I want to try to go look him up.
Damn. I also made a track in my yard, but it wasn’t to practice racing, it was just to practice driving. In the 6 months or so before I started drivers ed my parents gave me permission to drive our Jeep Grand Cherokee around our yard since I didn’t even have my learner’s permit yet.
I would get home from school, eat a snack or something, then go get in the Jeep and drive around my yard listening to music. The first time my neighbors saw me doing that they immediately called my mom to tell her what I was doing because they thought I was doing it without my parents knowledge.
Even after I got my permit I still did that and then once my dad got home and relaxed for a little bit we would go out so I could practice driving on the streets. The backside of our yard sloped down pretty significantly so I was able to make a small and easy offroad type of course to drive which made it much more fun than just driving in circles over and over again. Those were good times.
After I got comfortable driving on the streets and highways my dad had me hit 100mph on a backroad in my mom’s Pontiac Grand Prix which was pretty cool for 15 year old me. She didn’t learn about that until many years later.
One of my favorite podcasts to date! You guys are doing an absolute great job, always look forward to listening to these throughout the week. Could u guys by chance send a link or reply with the autobiography or the documentary’s u guys used so I could read/watch them too?
The dynamic between the three of you keeps getting better and better.
You guys rock.
I always like to be entertained while being educated.
Tick in both boxes. 👍
And James, nice work with the pronunciation of Denny Hulme's name. 👍👍🇳🇿🏎️🏁
You guys making this quarantine bearable!
#ramchargers
Seen all your videos!
Keep up the good work! Mo-power baby!!
I love these guys, they make me so happy
Most New Zealanders don't know Bruce McLaren was a kiwi. Certainly not a mainstream, celebrated national hero, which he should be.
soooo goood, this episode brings a lot of things to think about for alot of our top ten dreams cars dedication to make them real. this is a great collection of info that builds the desire to acquire a mclaren, no fire. also .... maybe a pagani history lesson? James'/donuts video on the pagani huayra BC was simply beautiful..........
Jack Brabham didn't let Bruce win the US Grand Prix in 1959. He ran out of fuel and pushed his Cooper over the finish line to win the championship.
Also fun fact about Jack: He is the only driver to win the F1 title driving one of his own cars.
I thought bruce also won using his own name and that only 2 people have done it
@ Donut Podcasts GREAT! my father inlaw loved this podcast. He went to engineering school with him, now we're getting story after story after story of what they got up to. :I
James looked great in the sunglasses
What you guys overlooked with the journey from Nurburgring to Brands Hatch is you have to go from Germany, across the bottom of the Netherlands, all the way across Belgium into France then along the coast a bit to catch a ferry from Calais over to Dover then drive up a bunch of twisty B and A-roads (the M20 wasn't opened until 2 years later in 1960) to Brands Hatch. Even today using all the main roads along the way that's at least a 7 hour trip.
I would fricken love a Past Gas on Jim Clark
lol I commented that as well. That would be awesome.
These podcasts are getting better every day
James always tryin to hype the podcast way tf up and Nolan is constantly voice of reason, holdin it down!! whats his face is just there haha but honestly lucky af to be in the presence of absolute talent lol I LOVE DONUT!!!!💕💕💕🚙💨🚗💨🏎🛻💨🚐💨
This has nothing to do with the podcast but I absolutely love James’ Dell sticker
Thanks for the podcast keeping me less bored in this quarantine
James bangs every accent its incredible
42:00 that fist pump got me like "Bru...i want that"
a Walk Hard: A Dewey Cox Story-style automotive history movie would be INCREDIBLE. I pictured that movie before Joe said the name hahaha
Walk Hard: Talladega Nights lol
Dewey Cox is an extremely underrated movie lol
Kiwi living in Australia who watches every show :)
I'm pissed cuz my notifications for this havent been turned on so I didn't realize there was tons of new content to enjoy! #modonutpodcastsbaby
Yooo this is gonna be good
Where is the Kickstarter where I can donate to fund this movie?
Lookin good james!! Keep it up! We want you around
Love the podcasts guys but I just wanted to say the Longford racing circuit was in Tasmania, not Victoria.
Other than that I love you guys and greetings from Tasmania!
I would buy this as a "Movie" totally!
With y'all as "Commentary"...
Take care,
🤓 -Thomas
Port Orchard, WA
(Just West of Seattle, Washington)
M1 links London to the north , Bruce would have set shore at likely south of London...no M1 I am afraid (unless they docked in Newcastle/Hartlepool but that is unlikely) Just to put it in perspective its 380 miles on mostly twisty roads, that go around a corner of the alps (or through some of it) then more twisty and some straighter roads to the French/Belgian coast, 3-6hr (thats today) boat ride and a further load of twisty narrow english roads to Silverstone minimum 2 separate border crossings pre EU , so a lot stricter than now
First off I told my friends he WAS TJ Miller n they believed it but he sounds dead on
Idk if you know what Cracked // After Hours is.. but Joe sounds JUST LIKE Michael Swaim from Cracked // After Hours, even more so than TJ Miller lol. Swaim is hilarious.. I loved Cracked & After Hours.. it sucks the company canned all of their talent. They had a group of like 8 people that all work for big time tv series / networks now, the best writer of the bunch already won and Emmy. After Hours is so good, I still watch it. I highly recommend it checking it out for all those who havent.
2:42 Already adding the McLaren 720s to a list of cars I want to experience before I die. That's a sexy car
Always nice to see poppa pump
so what is Nolan's back story? what did he do for donut in the beginning?
I love this podcast it’s just really annoying that you guys talk about things and we just have to sit and imagine what it looks like. Just add a photo in post or something
haha I know you are taking the mick out of our kiwi accent but Bruce actually spoke with a very English sounding type accent which was common back in those in New Zealand, but great vid he is a remarkable person and national hero.
Love it, keep up the good work
In the opening James reminded me of mic jagger
With the arm thing and giving it more juice
I’m happy he’s from New Zealand
Thanks for this. A McLaren thanks you.
PITTSBURGH WAS MY YEMEN! is a t-shirt waiting to happen
I loved the side mouth things 😂
cool shades bro
The AVUS is a racetrack in Berlin. So "in Avus" Sounds a Bit weird.
How’s high low vs Redbull coming?
I’m a bit disappointed, James. “Big Ginger” Devlin should’ve totally had an Irish accent. Love it! Thanks!
I watch Donut everyday but I never see you talk about this podcast !!
Y'all should do a podcast about Mario andretti!! He's my favorite driver from back then
James’ hair looks like he wants to talk to the manager 😂
I just found an old closed down airport local to me and I have an idea gate is locked but I’m sure I could figure something out or a diffrent entrance I found it in my snowmobile while out on trail so gotta do more research but I’m sure theirs a road in even if that’s to a gate I’ll relock it
Bruce McLaren, Bruce Lee, Bruce Jenner all great champions taken from us much too soon.
R. I.P. Bruces
Is it me or did James get slimmer? I think he looks pretty nice
Arjay Sakilla he is definitely slimming down, Kevin Smith had a heart attack a few years back and slimmed down after. Diet plays a big part in cardiac health, it’s good to see him recovering so well!
@@TheTubaEmporer That's pretty rad
TheTubaEmporer he had the heart attack 3 weeks ago
Look up the track layout for AVUS... its pretty weird for any era of racing lol
thankyouuu
I saw a Ute in New Zealand, I wish we could get the maloo in the US I’d love to have one.
Please do Keiichi Tsuchiya
#Dorifto #EurobeatsIntensifies
Blagger Kuno why can’t I give this 2 thumbs up?👍🏻 👍🏻
Hell yeah.. Though I'd like to see them do a podcast on Jim Clark, that dude was insane.
Whoa whoa 25:40ish what happened in pittsburgh... I'm from the burgh & now I'm curious but from the tone of the few vague comments it doesn't sound good but idk 🤷
when is the back-markers films release ?
so Taika Waititi doesn't even try to be Korg coz James tries to sound like Kiwis, interesting
I feel the silence when the ending came. it's a bummer for sure and it's truly sad.
*What sunglasses are those?*
New Zuuland mentioned let's gooooo
Ngl James's New Zealand accent is pretty much on point.
still needs work.
Do I smell a ready to rumble racing spoof?
James has obviously watched flight of the Conchords multiple times 🤣
Thanks for the great podcast im a kiwi and wanna be a f1 driver so remember my name it’s John Simpson you will hear it when I’m winning
In like 10 yrs
i believe in you bud! go for the gap
racing in the 50s is pure blood sport
New Zealand lessgooooo
Throw back I was the one calling Joe Deadpool’s friend from the bar
I can guarantee you, having grown up disabled, that limitation in your formative years has a lot to do with wanting to be fast in, the great equalizer that is, a car.
Lotus introduced the monocoque chassis in early 1960s
oh god, as a person who lives in auckland these place names were a RIDE
I'm a kiwi and I love your accent 😂😂😂
"27 next month...or this month"
gg Nolan
Is it just me, but does James’s New Zealand accent sound like the one eyed squirrel thing from ice age.
30:18 I understand what you're saying but I think it would be moto gp and the Isle of man tt
I’m glad they all changed shirts 30 minutes in
Haha, I'm a kiwi subscriber and yep you are butchering the accent and some names but that doesn't matter, we understand 😂. I respect the shit out of you guys for all the content you do.
i came off the motorway once at 110mph when i left the road! i bent over a emergency telephone pole and fliped a few times down a 20 feet embankment! i came out of the car without a scratch on me but it definately messed up my back
bruce mclaren + senna is quite the combo... q=D
it should be the most monstrous asphalt eating, cornering bending, apex predatorial mechanical entity ever;;;
Fun fact: The Papaya Orange (McLaren Orange) is actually General Motors School Bus Yellow.
Stirling Moss just died the other day, if you had told him back then he would die age 90 in bed he wouldn't of believed you
Sounds like he saying ''I AM CABROOOOOON'' LMAO
