Could you do a series on the history of Top Gear. I have listened to you guys since the start and it is the one subject I would want to hear about. If you can please make this happen.
That would be alot of research to be done going all the wayyy back to 1977 and finding out all of the old presenters some of which only even appeared for a few episodes before disappearing again🤣.. would be an interesting watch tho definitely!!
41:42 - Nolan, it's a Citroën Xsara, pronounced almost like Sara, but like a little breathy, like SaaRaah. Said it before and I’ll say it again. Whoever edits these videos. PLEASE include pictures of the vehicles or clips they are talking about when they are talking about them. What’s the point of watching the video version of the podcast if you’re not going to include visuals?
Thanks for covering such an impactful driver in my life and, in my opinion, doing Colin justice. You should do the WRC as a whole since it isn't around anymore.
Cool story about fredrik Asabo I met him at a matsuri in Okinawa and asked him what gave him the bug. He told me that "I was with my grandmother in her old Volvo and the road was very icy, she started to under steer in a corner. So instead of going in to the ditch she ripped the handbrake and slid around the corner. Since then I was hooked"
The intro about how Colin McRae kicked the fenders and kept going, is the reason why I think rally racing is the best discipline, because the driver has to know how to fix or at least band-aid problems to get the car to the service station.
I am from Calgary, Alberta and remember my dad showing me that headline because I really like cars. I remember clipping it out and hung it on my wall for years. Gave me goosebumps when you guys mentioned it.
I have been asking for this but given the situation I feel donut are waiting for the inevitable or his recovery. I wish him a good recovery don't get me wrong. I have grew up watching Michael dominate f1 but I didn't get to fully understand how he rose to dominate the world for 7 times. My childhood mind was very shallow when it was thinking about f1 cars. Now as an adult I like to understand things better.
Well, it was not "mitsubishi livery", but Marlboro livery, in which instead of Marlboro, the driver's name was written. This happened because several countries banned ciggarette commercials, thus the livery with TOMMI written on it. The same happened with the 555 livery which appeared as ))), McLaren Mercedes/West ciggarette livery in Formula 1 and the most imaginative of them all, Jordan/Mugen Honda whose "benson and hedges" livery (with a couple of letter deletes) became "be on edge"
24:04 come to Russia some day guys, we have several winter drift series and welcoming drift community here. Kawabata and Charles Ng already loved that. Plus apart from flight costs its pretty cheap.
35:00 ish - I think you're being a little unfair to Richard Burns in this little segment. I know this is about McRae, but Burns was a rally legend in his own right, with a life also tragically cut short through ill health (let's not kid ourselves, it was cancer) rather than a tragic accident. I think RB deserves his own video or two..... He even had at least one of the best special edition Imprezas ever named after him. Edit - typo
Good episodes, always liked Colin when I was growing up, and I had the codemasters game, you asked for suggestions, I have a couple: 1). Jim Clark F1 world champion in the 1960's, (was trying to see if you have already done one couldn't find it) he is from Scotland, farmers son, and quite guy, who won the F1 championship. . 2). The second one is Guy Martin, a true "character", and former Isle of Man TT racer, he has crashed a few times and has some metal pins in him, and he held a few speed records in several classes, from bikes, tractors ect, he is a truck mechanic by trade, and owns a Rolls Royce Merlin engine from a WW2 Spitfire, he has his own UA-cam (Guy Martin Proper) channel, and has tried his hand at everything, from helping make a steam powered traction engine, to a samurai sword, which he manages to impress the master sword maker in Japan. He has been on TV a bit in the UK, with his own show, not sure if he has made it to the USA. Keep it up guys, great show its helping me keep entertainted through the UK covid lock down.👍
Suggestion - Graham Hill , Damon Hill Dad and the only driver to win the Triple Crown of Motorsport (Monaco Grand Prix, Indianapolis 500 and 24hr Le Mans).
being Scottish and waiting for an upto speed for so long on Colin I was so glad you guys took the time to do it proper justice. I would be lying if I said I wasnt emotional when flower if Scotland played on the bagpipes. would love to see you guys do either Sir Jackie Stewart or Jim Clark next 👌🏽 Best Scottish accent goes to joe 🤣🏴
Great cover guys I had multiple opportunities meeting the great Colin McRae a true gentleman and legend back here in Lanark Scotland. Keep the podcasts coming 👌👌👌 Made time to sign a autograph, not many great would do that.
Legends never die. That's what separates him from the other rally driver I think (just like Senna as Nolan mentioned). He never quits. He never knew when to quit. It's awesome
How about a Past Gas on the origins of Drift and Formula D? Will listen to anything you guys put out though, hands down my favourite podcast in the game right now.
As a WRC-fan, I really hoped for more criticism regarding his death. The crash was his fault and his reckles personality took the life of 2 children and 1 man, besides his own life. For me, he is seen too much of an idol in the rally-scene. You shouldn't idolise someone who committed manslaughter without criticism.
Can we get an Up to Speed on the Mitsubishi Gallant? It’s got some interesting history as the predecessor to the Evo and I think they even made a VR-4 version.
It would be nice to see an episode of a Finnish rally/F1 driver. In a lot of episodes you seem to always mention a Finnish racing driver so it would be nice to hear a full podcast of one, thanks.
the reason for the mitsubishi to have "tommi" written on the front is probably the ban on smoking advertisements. similar thing happened in f1 too, when it got banned the teams just wrote the name of the respective driver on where the name of the cigarette brand used to be, to go around the rule. mitsubishi had a deal with marlboro at the time, so instead of writing "marlboro", they wrote "tommi", since the livery and the font makes you think of the brand even though it doesn't say the name of the brand.
I'd been a rally fan from about the time I knew what a car was. I always remember when watching it on TV, even if you didn't see the race number or the names on the side window you'd know it was McRae driving as the driving style was much more elaborate than anyone else's and he always had the biggest cheers from the crowds as he went past sideways. When I found out he died, I grieved like I'd lost a family member, and I'm not ashamed to admit I still get teary when I see anything about him now.
Love the 'flower of Scotland' at the end, our national anthem always brings passion to our sports events and celebrations, One day, Scotland WILL be independent and be a nation again! Saor Alba
Awesome guys, thanks for the video. Be sorry for the lives of the children never fulfilled who died alongside Colin. As for the man himself, celebrate the single minded determination to not just win but do so spectacularly leaving nothing back in the locker room. Celebrate the boy who nicked his hero's bike when he wasn't looking, then emulated his hero in Rally before surpassing his achievements. Celebrate the legend who refused to win by the numbers but always gave 110% heart (math never was his strong point!). God bless you Colin, flat out man of Steele. RIP Graeme and the children, Johnny and Ben, tragically taken so young. Thanks again for the videos!
The end of that brought a tear to my eye ngl! I was 13 when he died and the day he died, i was actually down ravenscraig park in Kirkcaldy (Scotland) the day he died and me and my mum remembered seeing a helicopter flying past that day and later when we discovered he had had his accident the route his helicopter would have taken would have passed over the park we were at and to this day im convinced it was his helicopter we seen that day fly over us, (we don’t see many helicopters over here) which i think is really sad and ironic considering how i used to be obsessed with him as a kid, had all the ps1 games, had a model impreza and scalectrix WRC Focus and impreza and posters etc! Definitely the most exciting rally driver of our time! Maybe not always the most reliable for a win but definitely the best when you look at him as an overall guy, man was just into anything with an engine basically and had a fuckin unbelievable talent!
The "being with a brand for so long that you don't really owe them much anymore" is just like Ken Block. He's been with Ford for a decade, and done a lot with them, but I'm glad he's able to do things with other manufacturers now and isn't stuck with them
The bad crash in the Ford Focus that Colin had, after crashing and flipping the car off the cliff, and landing upside down, Colin was stuck inside the car for 45min while the wreck crews tried to get him out.
He and Ken Block were the best drivers of all time. I still like the line from James' D list where he says Colin drove like dementors were chasing him. Rest in peace Colin McRae. Colin McRae and Ken Block are running Group B Rally with Jesus in heaven now. Godspeed and God bless.
As much as I like your work guys you should really do your research better because the amount of misinformation in this is mindblowing. First of all the biggest accident happend during the '00 Corsica rally (not the recce in which crews cannot drive rally cars or wear helmets), and only Colin wasn't wearing the fireproof overalls because on the "hot rallys" the drivers (and some times the co-drivers) didn't have to. The headlight incident in the Mini Cooper happened not in its first outing but in 1966 which was it's third, and on a rally that was ran mostly though the night a "stronger" head light certinly gives you advantage.
Agreed. Also just because a turn is a 6 does not necessarily mean you're in 6th gear. The number is only meant to not the turn severity. Or am I wrong? Been a rally fan for two years now and in all my research I've never heard that.
@@Bigsuomi1991 you're right, majority of the drivers use the numbers in pacenotes to describe the thightnes of the corner (mostly 1 beeing the thightest and 6 or 7 beeing the most open)

I would like to see episodes on tuners from the 80s and 90s like Callaway, Roush, Hennessy, Lingenfelter
Callaway especially. Most people want overpriced supercars but I want the sledgehammer.
First thing I did of after I bought my Blue Subaru? Gold Wheels. As it should be.
Ha love how you guys had no idea who Seb Loeb is! recommend you do a show on him, possibly one of the greatest drivers of all time!
Killed Rally, the sport had no real competition and was boring

He's the host for the Norwegian Top Gear, he told the same story there too
I love Colin McRae! I love Honda too though, when is the Soichiro Honda episode coming?
Oh man that would be awesome, we got a glimpse of his life in so many up to speeds. I want the story behind the whisky distillery he had post-war.
The intro about how Colin McRae kicked the fenders and kept going, is the reason why I think rally racing is the best discipline, because the driver has to know how to fix or at least band-aid problems to get the car to the service station.
