Get nae nae’d, hikers!
This was so fun to watch! Hoping once the epidemic passes you guys can do more in this format.
@@rillloudmother Alexis is a wonderful person! She's always happy and she's smart and just so positive. What's wrong with her?
Is a sea stack the same as a rauk?
Wow. For being in the title, next to nothing in the episode about stacks causing crashes.
This whole series was a cool idea and Alexis should definitely host more, she is so enthusiastic
Absolutely agree!
Why have you guys been hiding her?!?! Give Alexis more camera time. She's awesome. 🙂
I concur! NEED MORE ALEX!!!
Agree! Alexis should do the presenting instead of Hank, because it's so irritating that he talks too fast!
Talks to fast? I always listen to scishow @ 1,5-1,75x speed just to save life..
Seriously speak as fast or slow as you want, I will still speed up the video!
Thank you for toning down the ads so much, I thoroughly appreciate it, now that you've made that mistake and you've corrected it I'd love to see more stuff like this. actually having the real thing in the background is way way way nicer than a green screened stock photo and some text.
We complained about too much car, you brought it back to a reasonable level, thank you Sci Show, you listen and you rock! I'm not opposed to sponsorship like this, just that part 1/3 was waaay too much of an add. The rest - alexis, going on the road, you're 95% there, do it again! :)
Sad to see this series end. I hope you guys do more in the future!
Hope Alexis gets more Sci facetime, shes a good presenter.
Agree! Alexis should do the presenting instead of Hank, because it's so irritating that he talks too fast!
@Evi1M4chine Firstly, I like Subaru's, secondly, I liked the science. I also understand that since it is free to me that money comes from somewhere...I am ok with it being from Subaru. If this arrangement bothers you, that is ok, but as a human living in a complicated world I can compartmentalize such things.
Alexis is so animated. It would be nice to see her on this side of the camera more often.
Agree! Alexis should do the presenting instead of Hank, because it's so irritating that he talks too fast!
I'm from here!!!! Woooh! So cool to see you guys doing "field trips"
To everyone who says the Subaru segments aren’t that bad: SciShow is a channel dedicated to scientific education and awareness. Much of their content focuses on climate change which is caused by greenhouse emissions. Much of the SciShow viewership thinks it is disingenuous for the show to partner with a carbon - emitting vehicle company to produce content for this reason. Yes, brand deals are how they keep the lights on, but there are plenty of brands willing to work with SciShow. Subaru, nor any other car company, should be one of them.
Kevin Cheely subieee gaaang
You guys should look at the other two thirds of Washington and Oregon. It's not necessarily as photogenic as the coast (though I personally think it is) the geology is truly epic. Think lava pools so mind bogglingly deep they flattened mountains. As well as rivers of liquid rock hundreds of miles long. Thanks for the show.
*Next................Australia!!!!!!*
In the outback with the outback
I just left Washington on an emergency flight home to Australia, so it truly would be amazing to have these guys 'following' me.
How does wildlife respond to a shipwreck?
Undersea critters:. It's free real estate
I went to Olympic national park in August and I was amazed man... such different ecosystems in one area, I also went to Rialto beach at sunset
Sea stacks and subarus...truly a brave new world
So, two things. First Alexis Dahl really needs to become a regular presenter on this channel. She's great! Second, every time Stephan and Alexis said "sea stack", all I heard was "slesstak."
I love this series Because I'm from Standwood Washington but I was very young when I moved away and never really learned the history. I love the overcast skies and the wet green environment
@Evi1M4chine I'm pretty sure I'm Scottish, my last name is Campbell
check out CWU professor Nick Zentner's youtube videos on Washington...
She stacks sea stacks by the sea....stacks.
When the pandemic finally ends, you should do a trip to Europe :)
Or get sci show watchers from Europe to send in our own videos and information!
Evi1M4chine there is a flu vaccine.
It isn’t perfect, but it has been proven to reduce complication rates, hospital stays and mortality.
Yes, flu kills, but we have a vaccination option. People make the decision to take that or risk their lives each year. Personally I take my flu vaccine each year, especially as I have complex health conditions that increase my chances of complications if I got flu. My asthmatic daughter always gets hers too. Unfortunately in the U.K. we have to pay for it for people who aren’t ‘high risk’ so my husband and eldest child don’t tend to get one. But I offer to buy them one each year and they make an informed decision.
Flu does kill every year, but not quite the numbers we are seeing from C19. There is a covid 19 website set up to dispel facts about the virus and one of the facts is “it’s just like flu” which is not true. The percentage of people dying is higher, the infection rate is higher than influenza too. This is not the same as seasonal flu anymore. Maybe it started out with similar statistics, but not now.
@Evi1M4chine
This is not like the normal flu or even other corona virus strains like SARs. Not only is it a much more deadly form, hence being called "super flu", we have no immunity built up against this one.
So in other words, the situation we're in is a lot like how Europeans brough the common cold over to North America, but on a global scale.
That of course means its that much worse for those with compromised immune systems.
Nice job with the video, guys! It’s a lot more interesting than someone in front of a green screen with words in the background.
Alexis what incredible writing! So enjoyed this episode and also learned a lot! Keep up the great work! Aunt Kathy!
I agree! I hope she is able to host more episodes! Her positive energy really resonates with me :)
4:25 so if the sea stacks turned out to be an actual ship, were they planning to crash into them instead?
Ray: That was my first thought as well. :p More likely, the thinking is "if there's another ship there, it must be safe water to sail into".
When I started watching this I had no idea i would be back home from school so soon, and now I am in Washington wishing I could go visit these places! Maybe in a few weeks... Also for the next feild trip you should talk about the great flood from glacial lake missula!
A series going from the start to the end of the Grand Canyon would be awesome. Explore the geologic changes from erosion and how that has exposed the history of the earth hidden in the layers.
Or the unique and amazing Great Sand Dunes located in the San Luis Valley of Colorado, which is the Largest Alpine Valley in the world.
I loved seeing Alexis. Its nice to see the people who help make scishow other than the hosts. You should do an episode all about who is who and what they do for scishow.
Ps: Alexis is adorkable
It isn't a site of dating !
@@linefortier8595 I didn't mean it like that. I'm surely not trying to be gallant here. She's Adorkable, i thought it needed saying, but that's that. Nothing to it. Can't a person get complimented without people assuming the person complimenting has secon intentions?
Really interesting.
Also, the sea stacks in Australia - the '12 Apostles'. There's never been 12 of them, and they were originally just called the Apostles. But people eventually started calling them the 12 Apostles from the assumption that there were 12. Also, one of the stacks collapsed recently, but it's been the only one so far.
I like this much better than #1 and #2. it was much "meatier", and I had known almost nothing about sea stacks before. I also liked the ad bit, because it sounded like Stefan actually had something unique to say about it and could demonstrate it (the trunk does look convenient).
more Alexis please, she is awesome at this
Thank you SciShoe for traveling for me since I can’t travel due to quarantine....!!!!YOU GUYS ROCK( Get it)!!!!
SciShoe? that would be a interesting spin off (mini). It could be like this video but then just outside in general.
showing science around you.
😭😭😤Autocorrect loves messing up my words!!!
@@Marchking45 wait it was not a intended pun? So your auto correct makes dad jokes.
I grew up going to the Leo Carrillo beach in Southern California, and the beach looks a lot like that with caves and sea stacks. It’s cool to now know how they formed.
I really enjoyed you guys road tripping. It's a fun way to do vids.
I live on the north Oregon Coast, and I really enjoyed this series. Seastacks are one of my favorite coastal geological features. I researched our local seastacks at the public library several years ago and found that many of them are a western extrusion of the Columbia River Basalts, which I think is pretty cool. I enjoy looking for the range of basalt expression, from large columns to brickbat jointing to pillow lava.
Thanks for coming to my state. This was great. I am so glad you are ending it at Ruby Beach. It is my favorite place on earth. You should really come back in the summer. If you want to do another series on the amazing geology ofWA visit Eastern WA. Not many people know we have a desert in the PNW. Lots of cool volcanic formations and so much more to explore.
Much better balance of commercial to educational video compared to the previous episodes in the series! Kudos
I know it’s cold over here in western washington but, Stephan is that 2 jackets, a flannel, and a polo??? But seriously, it’s nice to see some of the really nice stuff we have being shown to the rest of the world
It was January on the coast. Moist wind-chill is pretty unpleasant.
What a beautiful place. It looks like a setting for a scary monster story and the sound of the rough sea makes it even better.
Sadly, the most prominent monster movie filmed in the area is Twilight. :P
Look at that gorgeous cinematography! And that seaside room tone?! Top notch.
Sleestaks? From The Land of the Lost?
Subaru - the Pacific northwest's traffic tie-up leader.
I would absolutely love to see more Field Geology videos like this. This was really interesting and I'm glad you guys have a source of funding to aid in making these videos.
This was a really cool series, please do more at more national parks if possible!
4:32 "I'm a sea stack. Your call."
both the style of this series and just the idea or you showing science out side I do have to say it's a very refreshing.
I understand that it is not really feasible to do constantly but maybe once or twice every year.
She's great and all but there's definitely no replacing Hank I love hearing stuff from him and I think they know that that's why he's doing a lot of them lately
The local stacks we have here in Tipton County are made of conglomerated beer cans and beef jerky wrappers. Every bit as scenic as it sounds!
Cool series, but one question, what possessed you to go to Olympic National Park in the middle of winter?!? I can think of far better times to visit a place well known for its extremely wet, hypothermia inducing weather!
Compared to Missoula in the winter, it probably seemed like a warm vacation!
A little thing called ✧・゚: *✧・゚:* Sponsorship™ *:・゚✧*:・゚✧
Yeah, I went accidental snow camping in April once. Oops.
@@jeffreym68 I did that once too, in April if I remember correctly! Worse yet, I had just taken the tire chains out of my truck & put them away for the summer. Dammit!
@@RedwoodGeorge So true! You guys are amazingly cold hardy! I don't mind almost drowning, but when I can't find my daughter under the snow, I must draw the line. 😵
That New Subaru was great, but the coolest new vehicle SciShow had in this video was Alexis!
Yea!!! Another Suburu commercial!!! Please do Raid Shadow Legends next.
I hope Daddy Hank was proud
I was hoping to visit Olympic this summer or next. I guess it'll probably be next, but anyway, thanks for the preview!!
Thanks guys for showing off my state.
People get stuck on them as they are attracted to the surrounding tide pools at low tide, then whoops the tide comes in and the Coastguard has to come rescue them. Odd to omit something like that.
Of course the video about Washington is sponsored by Subaru
Also, rocks in the water often cause nasty undertows. Which is why the family camp my family attends has a "No Wading without a rope, life vests and a lifeguard" rule. (Before I was born, one of my cousins got swept out to sea at a family gathering thanks to an undertow. He stayed calm and was recovered alive. The surfer who tried to rescue him wasn't so lucky...)
You’ve overlooked the coolest geological feature of Washington State- the dry waterfalls, scab lands and gorges carved by the non-mythical Missoula Floods.
I think this series is mostly about the Coastal/Olympic region. Dry Falls and other glacier-carved landscapes deserve their own series.
What better way to practice social distancing that going to the middle of nowhere.
Oh wait no I just read the description. Oops.
Why was the reaction to seeing a ship to steer TOWARD it? What's the reason for this?
Maybe to get close enough to communicate and have assistance looking out for trouble. And I don't think that they wrecked on the rocks that were above water, I believe that they crashed on rocks in shallow water around the stack.
"When In Rome" "Yes... Continue."
ONE OF US. ONE OF US. ONE OF US. ONE OF US. ONE OF US. ONE OF US.
Great series
I skipped the advertisement for you guys 5:42
Thanks man, that cut out all the bs and saved me a lot of time!
You're doing god's work here. Thank you.
@scishow great 3 part series!
I can't enjoy watching this with you both having been in coats. I understand your dedication to the channel yet knowing that it was uncomfortable out there just puts my mind to the temperature as of right now.
damn i just love scishow
Well I love her, I hope she continues to do some video's
great series, plus alexis is a great host and she should apear more often
Man, that place is really pretty
I figured you would have mentioned all the gemstone fragments that gave Ruby Beach its name.
When the corvid-19 scare is over and done you guys should do one in Maine.
Corvid-19? You afraid of teenage crows?
Why would a ship turn towards another if they thought they'd crash? Sorry if this is a stupid question.
Braeden T because if it was a real ship it would move at about the same speed and would probably go toward a dock so tyr first ship decided to follow it
@@tavasp Ah okay thank you that makes much more sense.
Erosion is constantly changing the landscape. The sea stack at time 1:48 through 1:52 and I believe it is the same one behind you while filming at 2:33, has lost half of its north facing base and a little of his height. I have several photos of the sea stacks at Ruby Beach on my phone from August 17, 2011. They have all changed a little due to the erosion from storms and high tides. You need to go back in July or August and spend few nights down at Kalaloch Campground.
I love sci show but seeing their manurisms and apparel while here in Washington on this is funny. They would have a hard time living here. And its not even alaska
Alexis is actually from Michigan. I can't imagine she would have a hard time living there since it drops below freezing for most of the winter and gets pretty heavy snows in Michigan.
@@rocktheworld2k6 well considering how it was and how their dressed for what time of year if was it seems otherwise
The issue isn't the cold so much as how long they probably spent filming. More than likely they were out there for hours, 'used to it' or not prolonged exposure is still a problem. Temperature really just effects how easily/quickly it happens.
They also weren't dressed that heavy, and definitely not for Alaskan winters. They make ours look like summer.:P
I'll bet Hank knew they were done before they said they were done.
Dont forget the huge logs getting bashed into the rocks during storms etc
The cover photo of my debut album was taken at Ruby Beach
I recently moved to the Olympic Peninsula, partially for the geology.
Have you checked out "Nick on the Rocks". Geology Professor from Central Washington University. Fantastic Geology communicator.
NGL I was hoping for a video about how oceans can cause shipwrecks off the coast of Washington(or in general)
Is a sea stack the same as a rauk?
Hank!!! Tickelish , strange appendeges.
Okay seriously this has bugged me forever... Is that a dalek flying off from the Earth in the intro. Somebody please help.
It's the Cassini probe! It turns out when it's just a silhouette and moving quickly with motion blur... it looks very Dalek-like :p
@@SciShow my brain is happy to know now, but my fandom is sad.
I laughed my ass off when I saw it after you mentioned it.
This wholly reminds me of after hours content on Animal Planet! Real jack Hannah vibes!
Are they talking about Sleestaks?
Unpopular opinion: I really enjoyed this series and did not mind the "Subaru commercial" aspect one bit. Would like them to do it again.
I actually saw a Subaru Ad last week saying they were partnering with SciShow I was so stocked to see it and here it is!
Yeah, so many people complained about the last video, even though this kind of cooperation keeps this channel going. Most interestingly is that the people that complain arent even patreons (at least the ones I asked about it). This one video probably covers 20 videos fiancially, which is a great deal for all of us viewers!
But they expect the hosts to life off love and air.
I picked up a little flack last week for praising this series. I loved it and I hope they do more. Most importantly, I hope they don't feel limited by being unable to accept sponsorships. They should take any that comes their way, and we should applaud those sponsors for doing the right thing and encouraging growth in science knowledge
@@flippa4220 I know it's ridiculous how much people will complain about sponsored content. Especially stuff like this which doesn't shove it in your face or anything.
@@roy4173 I totally agree!
you didn't show the neat driftwood at Ruby Beach.
What church/temple is attached to this ship graveyard?
More Alexis please xD
Rad 🤙
Has a sea stack ever been filmed [naturally] falling over, collapsing, or breaking away?
What about Vesuvio?
Great video! Loved it to pieces!
Hey! You're in my neck of the woods. Ba-dum-bum! 💖
Awkward time to be visiting Washington! 😆
Goonies never say die!
How could you talk about sea stacks without talking about Old Harry's rocks :P
dope
why, if you're a ship in the fog, would you steer TOWARDS another ship? surely that could be just as dangerous as steering into some rocks?
An example of dangerous sea stacks is the abandoned lighthouse "Terrible Tilly" off the coast of Oregon.
Not only was Tillamook rock a significant navigational hazard for ships, but the same swirling currents, unpredictable winds, and huge waves which made it so dangerous also made the lighthouse itself near impossible to BUILD. The US Lighthouse service lost the Barque 'Lupatia' and her entire 16 man crew during construction. The light itself was deactivated fairly early (1947 I think) in part due to the difficulty of resupply, with wind shear making airlifting supplies far too dangerous
Any particular reason they went ahead with building it, if it was so much trouble? Seems like someone had a vested interest somewhere maybe? (or they're just stupid...)
@@kme As with any lighthouse, there was a vested interest in preventing loss of life and cargo in the midst of night, storm, and fog. Its a mile off the present coast in the middle of what was a major coastal shipping lane, as well as waters frequented by local fishing fleets
Even if they thought it was another boat, why would they head towards it in the fog...?
2:31 S T A C K S
Best Subaru commercial that I have seen in a while. Oh, and Alexis needs to be in front of the camera a lot more.
