  • Athens, Greece - the stadium of first Olympic Games (the Panathenaic Stadium) in Athens. Let's travel to Greece and let's visit the Panathenaic Stadium (Παναθηναϊκό Στάδιο, Panathinaïkó Stádio) also known as Kallimarmaro (Καλλιμάρμαρο, or "beautiful marble"), which is a multi-purpose stadium in Athens, Greece. One of the main attractions of Athens, the Panathenaic Stadium is the only stadium in the world built entirely of marble. A stadium was built on the site of a simple racecourse by the Athenian statesman Lykourgos (Lycurgus) c. 330 BC, primarily for the Panathenaic Games. The Panathenaic Stadium was rebuilt in marble by Herodes Atticus, an Athenian Roman senator, by 144 AD and had a capacity of 50,000 seats. After the rise of Christianity in the 4th century the Panathenaic Stadium was largely abandoned. The Panathenaic Stadium was excavated in 1869 and after being refurbished, it hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the first modern Olympics in 1896 and was the venue for 4 of the 9 contested sports. The Panathenaic Stadium was used for various purposes in the 20th century and was once again used an Olympic venue in 2004. It is the finishing point for the annual Athens Classic Marathon. It is also the last venue in Greece from where the Olympic flame handover ceremony to the host nation takes place.

It’s magnificent. It makes you wonder if the emperor was jealous, or envious of this architect who engineered the seats, and had them made with marble. I don’t know if marble represents anything, but people were sitting on the steps for as spectators to something that everyone loves, for almost half a millennia . So many people have been there and have had memories there, and it’s very famous and the engineer is the one who gets most of the credit like Imhotep or something like that because he built the pyramid something that will probably last forever. Oh, so the marble does represent some thing it was used in the Parthenon, the temple of Athena and other statues. It’s like dedicated to the gods and basically gives the builder demi god status. Does it make him a son of Hermes?

THIS was, and should continue to be, the model for today’s stadiums. It’s simply the most magnificent stadium in the world, in my opinion. No, we don’t use marble, but the horseshoe with the open end to an incredible view are design features avoided today.
