There is a European competitor: The Strahov stadium in Prague, that could once provide places for 210,000 to 250,000 spectators. Today, the capacity has been reduced to 56,000 seats, as the building is in a very bad condition. It was not built in the times of Cold War, but actually in the 1920ies and 1930ies, and is an open air stadium, which means it has no roof.
Fun fact: I once stood inside on the lawn, together with my school class, when we were sightseeing the (then) Chechoslovakia in the late 1970ies. From there, you could see the grandstands only like remote strips of the horizon. The floodlights though were clearly visible. They must have been gigantic.

I lived in Plzen and spent time in Praha often. I've seen this stadium but never been in it. I remember watching (is it Sokolov?) performance there in the 70's. It did remind me of the North Korean assemblies I've seen online. They were actually very good and fit looking. My mama's family came from eastern Slovakia and I loved living in Czechia twenty years ago. Both countries are so beautiful and I'd love to visit again. I still have family in both countries.

A few precisions: I have been in this stadium 3 times for the Arirang Mass Games in 2013 and 2018.
Once in 2018 it was maximum capacity (Kim Jong-Un was there) and there were so many people, I beleive now the highest numbers about this stadium capacity.
At 7:40, note that the 2 portraits are made from card-holding students, about 50 000 of them, during the Arirang Mass Games. So these are not posters, but giant human-pixels based images.
The Arirang Mass Games are not held anually, but held for 3-4 years in a row, then stopped for another 3-4 years. They stopped between 1994 and 1997, but are now back on track. They are beeing held for about 3 months, many times a week.
The marathon is open to any countries, not just dictatorship countries!

Michigan Stadium is a quiet stadium. Michigan Stadium is designed to push noise up. Unlike Ohio Stadium with two cement blocks opposite of each other with the challenge of yelling louder. In 2009, I was in the fourth row for the Iowa v Ohio State game. I've never felt crowd noise like that (I've been to Michigan, Nebraska, Alabama, Cowboy Stadium, Iowa Stadium, Soldier Field, and many other stadiums). The best noise... the eerie silence when Iowa took Ohio State to overtime.

Actually if you watch videos of North Korea made by people who can travel there with less restrictions, like Indonesia or Malaysia, you’ll see that it’s not THAT bad. Reminds me more like being stuck in 80s Eastern Europe. I grew up in Hungary in that time, and it was closed, but if you aren’t materialistic it’s Ok.
So having time for some stadium events is not an issue. And they want the aesthetics of the stadium grand ness, they will find a way to fill the stadium.
For work we outsourced animation to North Korea. We had a full hour long Skype conference call with the studio inside North Korea. I was working in China where relations are normal.
North Korea isn’t paradise, but it isn’t that cartoony image people are portraying either.
So yes, they most likely can treat themselves to a stadium event once in a while

I'm not sure what stipulates what is and what isn't a "stadium." But the Indianapolis Motor Speedway home of the Indianapolis 500(Indy Car) & the Brickyard 400(NASCAR) is the worlds largest sporting venue. It is capable of seating 400,000+ spectators.
Anyone able to explain the difference between a stadium and a venue?

    • @sdot5389

A stadium is probably defined as one contiguous structure. Indy certainly isn’t that. It’s a series of structures built near each other, some with large spaces in between.

I personally don’t even buy that this place is the biggest stadium in the world. Can they cram 150,000 people inside at a time? Probably. But in terms of real seating capacity, it was clammed for years and years that it was officially 150,000, then they drop that down to only 114,000. Still the biggest in the world but by a more believable margin. If I had to guess I’d say the actual capacity of this place is more like 80,000-90,000

    • @RWBHere
      @RWBHere 3 роки тому +1

@@Mr.E723 114,000 people crammed into the stadium might be true, but the place cannot meet modern safety standards. The venue only has one entrance road and one exit road. That's a disaster waiting to happen.
