At that time, most companies in America were mostly male-dominated with women providing smaller support roles. There were several prominent women within Walt Disney Productions, well before WWII made women the backbone of the American workforce. In speeches made to his employees on February 10 and 11, 1941, Walt observed that women artists could fully equal their male counterparts, and were being included in his studio animation training program. So he was actually ahead of his time by hiring and training women for equal jobs as men. in the 40's!!

I asked myself the same question. Walt loved the Sherman Brothers, who were jewish. He did "Song of the South" with a black actor. In the documentary "Walt: The Man Behind The Myth" a black animator said how lovely he was and that he didn't understand the racist and antisemit rumours. I don't know. It seems to me this documentary just wants to destroy the image of him. I mean okay, nobody is perfect. It may be true that he gained all the credit for the work of his animators...
The African American animators name is Floyd Norman.He always had the lead for The Jungle Book.

Walt not only employed many people of Jewish descent-including Joe Grant, Marty Sklar, Ed Solomon, Ed Wynn Richard and Robert Sherman, and so many more who held prominent roles within Walt's company. I AM SO SICK of people thinking things that are simply not true. Look at how many of his employees loved him and worked for him for over 30 years. And your going to listen to these people? GOD please don't let this sway your veiw of Walt Disney.

It's as though the narration for this was written for an impressionable child. What fascinates me is that this whole documentary is a back-handed compliment to Disney. A cartoon-maker is being taken to task. He must have really influenced a lot of people. That's what power is all about and I think people, including his contemporaries are seeing green. Disney's public image is, in a political sense, like some sort of threat.
I guess the people at Termite Terrace felt the same way too? What about Tex Avery or even Fred Quimby? There seems to be many people from the PR studios here on youtube, btw, how much you and your other cronies are getting paid to troll others on youtube?

Why do people deny that these things are true? the people being interviewed knew him and worked with him. I get how hurt some people may be, as a film fanatic who follows hollywood closely I know how it hurts to find out that someone you admire isnt a very good human being...its heart breaking.
Because this isn't totally true. There was an African American animators and he was high in the ranks. His name is Floyd Norman. He was Lead animator on The Jungle Book. I suppose his views were not unusual at the time but it does make you sad to think that even someone who brings so much joy into the world can have such a narrow and autocratic mind. He also didn't believe in organised labour either, surprise, surprise, and testafied to the house un-american activites commission against the nascent union leaders in his own studio. Of course I suppose in america there is the tradition of the mafia being involved in organised labour so there is that to consider.

Well, unfortunately we as Americans love this sensationalist drama. These kind of documentaries with about zero factual backing are more fun to watch than truth. We no longer actually use our brains to determine if this type of BS is true or not, we just BELIEVE. Its unbelievable that in our modern day all of us couch warming average people would rather tear someone down than raise up role models. The dark side of Disney....give me a break.
I think Disney just lost touch after his studio went big. He couldn't run a large company like he'd worked with his friends earlier on, and he just couldn't get past that. The shock of finding out how dissatisfied so many of them were isolated him more. Happens to so many people.

Some women artists did important work in later years in designing rides for Disney (Mary Blair, major designer on It's a Small World and muralist for Tomorrowland 1967; Alice Davis, costumer on "Pirates"; and Harriet Burns, who worked on Tiki Room, The '64 New York World's Fair, and New Orleans Square). ........... Not to defend Walt Disney, but I think this documentary should've discussed how women were treated at other animation studios of the time and in Hollywood in in general. I'd like to know if they were worse off at Disney or about the same.

No matter what people say about him, I think Disney was a relative good man. A man of his time. Things were different back then. Not fair to expect he should have been ahead if his time socially. He had to push the workers and be picky in order to achieve perfection. What would entertainment be today without Disney? Nothing made today can compare to the cartoons in the 30's, 40's etc. Cartoons with humor, soul and heart. Sure he could have done some things different, but I think he mostly did what a man got to do to achieve perfection. Any other way hew would get bankrupt and would have to take a common job. When it comes to good entertainment, he was a true hero. Now I will shut up and watch Netflix :-)
You can still love the movies but you can still say that the people are not perfect

Well, I have been actually WORKING in the animation business for the last 2 decades(at ALL major studios) and all studios have mainly male animators. The majority of women were inbetweeners and assistant animators(clean-up) to this day, so to portray Disney as a chauvinist is a too simple. I can't say why that's the case but you can check out all the animated hand drawn features on IMDB. Check out the animation crew and you'll notice how many men are animators and how many women are clean-up.

the thing is, today we would see this as racist, or anti-Semitic, but that was the 1940s, in with disney, thats how people thought back then, look at WW2 propaganda posters, you see alot of racism in those.
Bill Melendez does the most damage here as a true witness, although he owed so much, in terms of learning the craft of animation at Disney. His relish of the opportunity to dump on his old boss is on his sleeve. I think this is all about the strike and the emotion and alienation that followed. Melendez knows how to spin the Disney history to a modern audience to hit all the cultural tripwires. But it doesn't preclude him from being full of bullshit.

2:02 Once you reach the age of 30 the hands get shaky. I haven't noticed and I'm 43. I guess it's because I don't draw any more. Past 50 it's more fair to get shaky. 30 is too early. But I guess even if it was just a tiny little bit shaky that would have an affect of the productivity and accuracy. Good rock & roll was invented in the 50's, it became more popular to be shaky :-)
