The costume drama series, Downton Abbey, written and created by Oscar-winning writer Julian Fellowes, stars Academy Award-winner Maggie Smith as a Dowager Countess of an Edwardian English country house in 1912. The series portrays the lives of the Crawley family and the servants who work for them, in a time before the last vestige of a century’s old tradition were stripped away by World War and the modern age. Somehow the fact that we were never shown Mary’s first reaction to the news of Matthew’s death makes the whole storyline even heavier. Our imaginations can conjure worse scenarios than the writers ever could have.

Actors had a 3 season contract and the actor portraying Matthew had other commitments. The final episode in 3rd season was the Christmas special. Made for a sad Christmas episode.
Matthews death and Anna's assault were the two times during the show that I broke down, devastated, and had to take a break. Anna's situation had me screaming in horror and my boyfriend begged me not to keep watching because of how badly affected I was.
I skip over Anna's assault storyline because it makes me so mad how she becomes such a recluse. It's emotionally too hard so I just go passed it to the next storyline.
Sibyl's death was like a knife to ky heart
One of the best period dramas ever made. Only wish it was still going. Maggie Smith is a legend.
Sybil's death was unexpected and soo heartbreaking. She deserved so much better. She was so beloved by her family and the servants as well, to the point even Thomas was seen grieving her death, the fact someone like Thomas is seen emotionally devastated shows what a kind and loving person she was
Has everyone forgotten William’s death? He knew he was dying but still showed his love for Daisy and she received a father in law from it.

The biggest tragedy is that O'Brien got to quit and never answer for her prior actions and rudeness.

I was waiting for Anna and Bates to have a heroic moment of figuring it out somehow after Thomas tells Bates to say “her ladyship’s soap” to O’Brien. You’d think Anna at the very least would remember that Cora miscarried by slipping in the tub. That should’ve made them realize and tell Cora, and then O’Brien’s departure from the show could’ve been because of an actual, well-deserved firing.
I still struggle with Matthew's death; I saw Sybil dying a mile away, that didn't surprise me though it wasn't easy to watch. But Matthew's accident really shocked me upon the first viewing.

I'm the other way around. I was shocked at Sybil's death but predicted Matthew's death as soon as everyone was talking about how happy they were and Matthew speeding along in his car

But when Matthew died, I was shocked. I sat in front of the TV and was speechless.

I think the writers are crazy. No rhyme or reason for Matthew's death. What did they say, "Let's just stick a death in here, for good measure"? Totally insane. That's what evil is, you know, pure insanity.

I don't live in the UK so I only get to watch Downton a couple of hours after it aired. I remember being spoiled that Matthew had died thru Twitter. I think it trended there at a time wherein I was casually scrolling. I was so unaware. Lol But knowing that he died didn't make watching this episode easier.

All the doctors ever did was stand around and hypothetically discuss the disease as the patients died.

What about Michael disappearing in Germany and then being confirmed dead while Edith had to coppe with secret pregnancy and delivery?? And Edith being jilted?? And the soldier that was left blind and then committed suicide?? And Barrow's suicide attempt??
Lord Grantham - Hugh Bonneville. Fantastic. His is a real love for animals. So endearing. The succession of lovely labradors.

I'm not sure why the incedent with Thomas is a tragedy...
Bc he wanted to be wanted and loved so badly. He was horribly rejected and embarrassed at a time when if you were gay it was on par with being a child molester, heck I think being the latter you could still get away with it without total social ruin 😢. It makes it all the more heartwarming to show that Thomas is the opposite of a child molester and sadly some very ignorant ppl still believe this today. Hurt ppl … hurt ppl. But Thomas rose above that and only concocted petty schemes against people that usually deserved it. Thankfully he had protection from a family very down to earth while also still being very traditional and a product of a time gone by.
And not one Edith scene!!!🤷♀️ Come on now, really.
