Everyone should own a portable generator. We have record breaking weather every year. I actually own 3 LOL. No I'm not a generator junky I didn't plan it that way I just got lucky and it's a long story. But what they are is a 1200 watt firman I use for small 1 hour outage. The other is a firman 9400 watt duel fuel. Its for a long term power outage and the 3rd is a champion 3000 watt. Its for family members or friends that need one in an emergency that doesn't have one. I stock up on fuel for the 9400 firman because it runs on propane and propane doesn't have to be treated and last for 30 yrs. I advise if your looking for a generator buy one that's duel fuel or Atleast runs on propane. Thanks for sharing. And helping people that don't know what to buy

Very good tips but may I suggest some more. I have written several articles for utility websites about generators since we often have severe storms where I live. First, most people buy one too big which uses too much fuel. Second, they run them too long. Third, they don't have enough fuel. There is no reason to have a big generator to run everything in your house at once during a power failure nor spend the money for an expensive transfer switch and an electrician to install it. I have found that a $300 4500watt generator with a 220v option along with two HEAVY DUTY fifty foot extension cords will easily suffice. I also have a couple wireless thermometers to keep in the refrigerator and chest freezer so that it is not necessary to open them to know when to plug them in. In the winter heat is not a problem since we have LP gas and a ventless gas fireplace. In the summer we have a 5000 btu window air conditioner in a closed bedroom which we run for a couple hours just before bed time and then shut it off. Even in 95 degree heat it will keep us cool till morning. In the day time we just move into the cooler basement. We plug the refrigerator and freezer into extension cords to the generator when the wireless thermometers show that we need to run them. At the same time we plug in battery chargers and whatever other items we need to run. We have found the lack of water to be a bigger problem than a power outage so I also have a 220v extension cord to run my well pump and refill the pressure tank at least once a day which usually only takes a few minutes. The heavy duty extension cords are necessary to reduce power loss and having two 50 footers allows me to plug in two things at once or connect them if needed to reach the full 100 feet from the outside generator. We can keep everything cold and a supply of water by running the generator a total of less than 3-4 hours a day. Five gallons of stabilized gas will run most of the week. Storing large quantities of gas can be a problem and a hazard of not stored correctly. There are small generators which can also run on LP which has a much longer shelf life but the generator output is reduced and one 20# cylinder of propane approximately equals one five gallon can of gas. If you have a large LP tank, the LP option could still work out better. Some of my friends have $10,000-15,000 automatic standby generators with automatic switch over but my economy system works fine and I can buy a lot of things like my travel trailer for the same money and take my generator along to live off the grid. Always have a lock and chain on your generator. Shut it down and bring it in at night to prevent theft.
If you don't need the 220v option and have a small refrigerator and freezer, you could even get by with an even smaller 2000 watt generator which would use even less gas but we find that the 4500 watt with 220v can do it all for us and still conserve fuel. I also strap my small generator on top of my brush hog mower and use it as a portable power supply for tools and electric chainsaws on the farm. My wife and I often take an electric pole saw and an electric chainsaw down the fence rows. I cut the high limbs and she cuts the low ones. This makes the small generator investment even more worthwhile and we know the generator is working and always ready to go.

Just a recommendation. I repair generators as a business. A lot of good info in this video so thanks. Duromax, in my opinion, isn’t a good generator. Poor quality. They look nice and shiny but will not last. Yes, you can buy an electric start 4-6 KW for $500-700. There’s a reason for that. If you can’t afford a new Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Winco, Master, or even a Briggs, buy a used one.
Most (Not all) of the Chinese generators are low quality. I’ve seen blown heads at 20 hours, failed alternators with low hours. The materials are substandard with windings made from aluminum clad with copper.
    Just my experience.

What do you think of Champion and Firman? Thanks

    • @Mikesorrento3344
      @Mikesorrento3344 4 роки тому +3

ALLEE, It depends. champion, Firman Generators are designed for intermittent use. If you change oil, properly break engine in, you can expect about a 600 hour engine life. Sometimes you can get more and sometimes less.
I have come across a few Champions with blown heads. They had less than 40 hours on them.
Furthermore, the alternator windings in many Chinese generators are made with copper clad aluminum wire which is more prone to failure.
I have yet to come across a Briggs and Stratton, or older Tecumseh with blown heads.
You are much better off buying one of these brands, even if they are 10-15 years old.
Then the Honda’s, Yamaha’s brands are excellent quality, last a long time, are rated for thousands of hours etc. But they are expensive.

Big tip. If you have a boat on a trailer, fill it up before a storm. Mine holds 90 gallons. I just siphon the gas out. After the storm, I'm gonna use the boat anyway...Also, get a dual fuel generator. I run mine on propane. As for air conditioning, get some shakers and put them in a window or two. That way you have cool air. He said it up top.

A wireless thermometer with remote sensors in the refrigerator and another in freezer with digital readout on outside panel cost me about $20 and also has alarm setting for indicating certain temps. This allows me to let my inverter generator be turned off or used elsewhere until the refrig reaches about thirty nine degrees ... or the freezer reaches around zero and .. alarm on external panel indicates time to re-start generator. This also allows me to monitor refrigerator and freezer without opening door to check temps. Xlnt video .. thanks for posting.
My generators are Generac GP2200i and Ryobi 2300 inverter with bluetooth control. I run a 10 gauge Yellow Jacket cord into house and split with Yellow Jacket 12 gauge three way splitter for refrig and another line to LED lighting, 24 watt LED TV and other electronics including modem and router. The third line goes to items such as fans. I cook with tiny 600 watt microwave or 900-1300 watt induction hotplate.
I have a small 6000btu Chigo portable air conditioner that can cool one room as a haven of last resort if needed in hot temperatures when central air is down. The Ryobi 2300 will power that window vented unit. My back up heat is radiant wood stove that will heat entire house as well as a small 1200 watt electric heater as needed. Living in rural area .. plenty of firewood.
I use two 42,000mah Battery Power Banks with AC output to power modem, router and TV during initial stages of an outage to decide if hooking up generator is necessary. These two units are always charged and hold their charge for several months in storage .. each Power bank will charge my laptop once or twice .. and run fiber optic modem and router to check outage map status and determine if the generator needs to be set-up for longer term outage.
If outage is short .. and restoration time is estimated under four hours or so .. I just use Power Banks for duration of outage. I also keep two 55 gallon blue poly barrels of water stored and ready for general use .. and for drinking, a seven to nine day supply of commercial purchased bottled water.
Since my generators use fairly low amounts of fuel .. I only need about ten to fifteen gallon of stabilized, ethanol free RV gas in storage at any time to get me through a week or more of outage in relative comfort. I rotate this fuel annually for mowing and other uses to keep it fresh. again, thanks for great video .. ~b

As you point out, there are many things to consider. When considering your wattage needs, really sit down and consider what items you REALLY need vs what you want to power during an outage. The manufacturers like to advertise surge ratings because it makes buyers think they are getting a larger generator than the are really getting. They also are starting to advertise run times at 25% to make buyers think they are getting a economical, low fuel consumption generator. A 4000 watt generator at 25% is a 1,000 watt generator.

This is useful. I have used a Generac 5500 for the past few extended power outages. I am looking at getting another gas run generator and am wondering about going up. My carpenter loves Predator and that one has a 9000 for less than $800 complete. The Generac could run a window a/c and a full-sized fridge and television and charge my phone and run my microwave all at the same time. But the power outages I have been through have been 10 days long and we use so much gas and there were trees down on every single street so it was hard to get to a gas station. If I got one that was overpowered for my needs would the runtime last longer? That is what I am thinking. I have also been looking at the Titan Solar generator. I live in the Northeast and often don't have sun during the first few days of a power outage if it was from a storm, but that can be charged with a car and it holds a charge for a year or more. Hard to make these decisions.

I have a 7k running watt generator that runs my entire home ...!!
All lights inside & outside ON, all 10 ceiling fans on & on HIGH speed, all 6 TV's on with cable boxes ON, internet modem on with wifi router on... all this ~2400 running watts..!!
3 Ton central a/c = 3200 running watts (capacitor absorbs initial surge of 80 amps) which allows my 7k watt generator to run it !!
Dryer = 6k watts which also can be run off my 7k watt generator (verified)
Hot water heater ~4400 watts... no issue with running from generator
Stove = 5700 watts with all 4 burners on high, generator runs it just fine
So yes i can run my entire home off this generator and using one 240V appliance at a time by just routing power accordingly...

You Tube sounds like what my Predator 8750 will do. The only difference is my hot water tank is NG along with my furnace Dryerand stove and oven. I pretty much can run everything at once and not even at 80% I don’t run my 2 Ton CA unit because I would need to install a hard start kit or chance damaging the compressor on the Central air, or even damaging my generator. My brother in law has a 9,000 running watt Genrac and he tried to run his 2.5 Ton CA and burned up the compressor apparently without a hard start for Central air the load just kicking on is pretty hard on a gen set.

One final caution, when using a small portable generator, NEVER NEVER NEVER connect it to your home wiring without a certified and proper transfer switch. It is easier and cheaper to just use heavy duty extension cords and plug your appliances directly into the generator. Also, read your instructions to see if you need to ground your generator.

NEC says you need to split the generator's ground and neutral if you're going to use the generator to power your home via a transfer switch. If you're just running extension cords, the NEC doesn't require split grounding.

Lots of good information. May have to go over to a gas operated stove and a gas on demand hot water heater. Then I will still have to buy propane cylinders to run it all on. You just cant win so may as well keep paying the electricity accounts. Where I live our power bills are going through the roof and I would just like to find a way of cutting the power company off. It may be possible as I am male 65 years old. I live on my own in a very small house 1 bedroom so I may find a way to go off grid. The hot water cylinder is the main user of my power. I have thought of trying one of those camping showers that run on bottled propane gas. They are on demand and only heat the water when you are using it. The rest of the time they are off. My 4000 W hot water heater is on ALL the time wether I am using hot water or not just emptying out my wallet all the time.

This is not complicated. Look at what you wanna run off the generator and then bump it up one notch or two.

Can that one run a 70 amp stick welder, 125 amp fcaw, 15 amp table saw, miter saw, or power tools?

    • @danburch9989
      @danburch9989 3 роки тому

A 70 amp stick welder will probably need about 20 amps @ 240v. The 125 amp FCAW will proably need about the same. In both cases, the voltage is stepped down to about 25% of line voltage which equals about a 4x increase in available current through the transformers. The 15 amp table saw will run on a 2000 watt generator but the surge requirement will be in the neighborhood of 4500 watts. Same with the miter saw; somewhat less for power hand tools.

can someone help me figure this out.. if a HP is 747watts (call it 750) than why do engines with example 10HP only give 3000Watt? i realize theres a effieciency loss when the mechanical power of the engine goes through the genset but some generators have quite large engines and give 1/3 their hp in electricity or less

    • @danburch9989
      @danburch9989 3 роки тому

My 8000/13500 watt generator has a 15 HP engine. 15 HP = about 11,000 watts. Looks like they targeted the engine HP to be 1/2 way between running and surge watts. Unless you can tell us what specific generator you're looking at, a 3000 watt generator should have about a 5.5 or 6.5 HP engine at the most.

    • @danburch9989

Maybe if it's a 1 ton central unit. When an an AC compressor starts, the locked rotor amperage is the instantaneous current surge at start up which can be up to 5+ times the running amps.

Duh, might have something to do with the rating of the generator, not the engine plus you don't really run the engine at full power - it will not last.

      I. Have a 3400 surge rating Champion for a camp trailer. It is for gas or lp, and I love it. Run it on propane all tthe timee. Easier to store propane than gas if you are in ahuuricane area does the natural gas stay on if so set it up to run on natural gas, no worries about storing gasoline.

    Get a sportsman 1000 or
2000 watt pure sine inverter genny. honda and yamaha is the biggest scam going.
chinese clones work great just ask my champ 1200 watt that has 7,000 hours on
    it. i have a honda atv i wish i had a taotao. i have 7, 000 hours on my
1200 watt champion. i have gone as long as 120 hours between oil changes but
usually i like to do it around 50 hours but plenty of times its been around
70-75 hours. add half a cap to a cap (i add 1 cap each oil change to my 1200 watt
champ) of seafoam to your crankcase each oil change and add some to your gas as
well regularly. you will get 10x the life out of your plugs. i went from
changing plugs every 150 hours to every 1000 hours. add a cap or two of STP
complete fuel system cleaner each oil change as well to your gas tank each oil
change. use synthetic oil, clean your spark arrestor with a metal brush when
you do the oil(i don't think this model has a spark arrestor but not sure). i
clean my air filter every 500 hours i use to do it every 50-100 hours but found
it unnecessary as i live in the country

First thing to know is AC is going to be out of the question using a portable generator.
Second, refrigeration is way more important.
Third, heating via forced air or hot water isn't a huge power draw but....wood heat takes no "juice" at all.
