It would be cool to see a video on Mario Lemieux's 1993 season. 160 Points in 60 game with 69 goals. If he did not miss 20 plus games for cancer treatment he may have broken Gretzky's single season goals record and points record.
As a Ranger fan that playoff was a rude awakening to Jaromir Jagr. I remember their left d-man Mark Hardy must have gotten 2 holding penalties a game hanging onto Jagr skating right by him. He probably should have gotten even more holding calls. Jagr was big and fast and strong, like not many I had seen before.
PFB1994 Jagr should serve as an example to players today how to play with integrity. He wouldn't embellish. He didn't dive. Shanahan said (later in their careers when they were teammates in New York) he never saw anyone take as much abuse in a game as Jagr. In the famous Olympics hit "Ovechkin steamrolls Jagr" Jaromir got up and skated away like it never even happened. Where's the "Jagr takes monster hit and skates away like it never happened" video clip?
In Re-reading my comment, I may not have been clear. I meant it was a rude awakening to me that there was the guy who was uncontainable. Lemieux was big and fast and skilled, but Jagr, was also powerful to add to that combination. And Jagr had the greatest season in NY Rangers History when he got to the team 14 years after this cup, Jagr singlehandedly brought the Rangers franchise back to respectability.
@Matt Pizzano me too. It was so wide open tons of skating and NHL video games were awesome.

Have never been a Pens fan, but was a HUGE Belfour and Bowman fan. Hence I watched these playoffs even more intently than usual. That Pens team was STACKED!
I'll never forget how hilarious it was in game 4 of the finals when Belfour lost his mind and Hasek had to go in for him. That was so funny. Belfour lost his damn mind. I think he only let in 1 goal too. It was also the first time I ever saw Hasek play.
The 2016 season reminds me a lot of this season. This was the first season I really watched hockey and fell in love with the Pens and haven’t ever left the bandwagon. Which then leads to next year...
There were a lot of blockbuster trades this season! Messier going to the Rangers, LaFontaine to Buffalo with Pierre Turgeon going to the Islanders, the massive trade between the Flames and Leafs that saw Gilmour go to the Leafs, and the massive trade between Pittsburgh and Philly with Tocchet going to Pittsburgh and Recchi going to Philly
I remember kids in my neighborhood wearing San Jose Sharks gear. Mind you I grew up in Houston TX and doubt they realized that the Sharks were a real life professional sports team 😄.
canucks had very good team!!. you had the lifeline courtnall - ronning-linden and bure larionov. playoffs i remember adam graves visicious slash against mario and in boston series when Lemieux dekes ray bourque and bob cole says " have you ever saw a such finesse"...something like that. and Jagrs goal in first stanley cup game against blackhawks. i think that this is first time that one town has tvo teams in the finals same year Bulls and blackhawks.
The Stevens arbitration was a clear case of the league punishing the Blues for using free agency to help their team. Awful doubly because the blue gave up tons of first round picks for signing stevens/shannahan.
I rem learning about pit won back to back learning as a fan I say to my self saying my self how cool would be see back to back and I rem saying people Pittsburg was going be the first team win back to back since red wings and be the first in cap era funny I years latter I was right years later
One thing I don't understand is that during this time, the San Jose Sharks were able to use Cow Palace in San Francisco as a temporary arena, yet back in 1967, the league didn't think it was good enough to be one for the California Seals (later the Oakland Seals), thus forcing them to set up in Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum. Go figure.
Was Messier in the last year of his deal when he got traded to the Rangers? I seem to remember the Caps made a huge push to try to get him in free agency.
Best players ever: 1. Bobby Orr 2. Mario Lemieux 3. Wayne Gretzky 4. Gordie Howe 5. Phil Esposito 6. Jaromir Jagr 7. Charlie Conacher 8. Guy Lafleur 9. Bobby Hull 10. Jean Beliveau But it becomes very arbitary at this point and easier to group them as numbers ranked 1 through 20 or something. Maurice Richard and Howie Morenz would probably be next on the list.
I think Kevin Stevens only scored so much because he played on a line with Lemieux. It inflated his totals. Anyone could have scored 50 goals playing on Mario's wing. And it showed because when he stopped playing with Mario his totals dropped dramatically. Sort of like How Bernie Nichols had 1 or 2 amazing seasons riding coattails of Wayne Gretzky and Jonathan Cheechoo benefited from playing with Joe Thornton tremendously.
Yes he was a great power forward. Not trying to say he wasn't. Just that he'd have never put up 50 goal hundred point seasons without Mario. I saw him play too those 2 pittsburgh back to back cups were the first two seasons of hockey I ever saw. Someone like a Jagr proved that after he wasn't with Mario anymore proved that he was still one of the most dominate players in the league. I think he won 4 consecutive scoring titles, and he won most of those without Mario as his Centre. Stevens tanked pretty fast when Mario was no longer with him. Imagine if someone like a Brett Hull or Cam Neely played on Mario's wing? We could have seen 2 players beat Wayne Gretzky's 92 goals record in the same season. Brett could have scored 100 goals if Mario was dishing him the puck when they were both in their prime in the early 90's.
U forgot 2 mention Adam Graves slashing Mario n breaking his hand causing him to miss 6 games. But Jagr n Barrasso took over n beat the Rangers without Mario
You mean to tell me that Washington will one day beat Pittsburgh in the playoffs?!? Freakin spoiler alert! Ruined the whole series for me Shannon! (Lol)
Kevin Stevens was unbelievable. Tough as nails. Glad he seems to be doing better lately.
Always looking forward to these videos. I'll be re-watching this series in due time.
Pancakes and Hammers it'll be fun to play continuously on a playlist.
It would be cool to see a video on Mario Lemieux's 1993 season. 160 Points in 60 game with 69 goals. If he did not miss 20 plus games for cancer treatment he may have broken Gretzky's single season goals record and points record.
Sportsnet did something that is on UA-cam somewhere about that whole season
would love to see a video on this!
Stevepeeve 20 games is a quarter of a season
As a Ranger fan that playoff was a rude awakening to Jaromir Jagr. I remember their left d-man Mark Hardy must have gotten 2 holding penalties a game hanging onto Jagr skating right by him. What a team and what a time in the league
@Matt Pizzano me too. It was so wide open tons of skating and NHL video games were awesome.

I was 11, I remember things about this season well. Great video Shannon!
Such a great year. Saw the Canucks at Pasta da Puck. House served the table beside me and Valk and LInden hosted.

Scott Stevens going to the Devils changed a decade plus of hockey. Maybe a video on it later?
Jonathan Zygmunt yes a sad story...
I remember kids in my neighborhood wearing San Jose Sharks gear. Mind you I grew up in Houston TX and doubt they realized that the Sharks were a real life professional sports team 😄.
THG ... you need to do a video about the Russians coming in during this early 90s - Federov, Bure, Mogilny, Vladdie, Larionov, Khristich etc
Chris B Pretty sure he did one on some of those guys.
canucks had very good team!!. you had the lifeline courtnall - ronning-linden and bure larionov. playoffs i remember adam graves visicious slash against mario and in boston series when Lemieux dekes ray bourque and bob cole says " have you ever saw a such finesse"...something like that. and Jagrs goal in first stanley cup game against blackhawks. i think that this is first time that one town has tvo teams in the finals same year Bulls and blackhawks.
No mention of the Tocchet for Recchi trade, wow!
👍👍 For the mentioning Gartner record!
Could of mention the Recchi > Tocchet, Kjell Samuelsson-trade...
Sverige i bet Pittsburg would regret that trade because Recchi had back to back 100+ point season in philly
Matthew McCloskey don't think so.

It's a great day for hockey!
The Stevens arbitration was a clear case of the league punishing the Blues for using free agency to help their team. Awful doubly because the blue gave up tons of first round picks for signing stevens/shannahan.
This was the first playoffs I actually remember
Hey, Gary Leeman scored 50 goals!
I hope you had Leeman cards to trade for his Gilmours.
I rem learning about pit won back to back learning as a fan I say to my self saying my self how cool would be see back to back and I rem saying people Pittsburg was going be the first team win back to back since red wings and be the first in cap era funny I years latter I was right years later
Looks like Kevin Stevens was just a depth scorer. Once he lost Lemieux and Jagr he was Just Another Guy (JAG).
Pittsburgh had that word print jersey
Craig Dickens not until 1992-1993.

the year i was born
Was Messier in the last year of his deal when he got traded to the Rangers? I seem to remember the Caps made a huge push to try to get him in free agency.
Kevin Stevens, now there'e a guy you should do a video on
A Chicago vs Pittsburgh final today would just be the worst
You should do a video on the Shanahan Stevens thing.
No mention of the strike thst postponed some games?
Sharks makes it into the leauge!
best team ever
Stevens was never the same after land on and having his face rearranged by the ice.
I rember the penguins were the shit in NHL 94. Like mario was unstoppable. They were my first favourite team.
Brian Trottier great pick up.....
Repeat after me..capitals vs penguins is a bad matchup...for the capitals
Peter Časnocha don’t be this negative I’m sure this won’t become a one sided rivalry
They blew a 2-0 lead in 96 as well. That was the series with the 4ot game.
Ah yes. One of those years where the Capitals had a 3-1 series lead with TWO HOME GAMES LEFT and lost :/
Best players ever:
1. Bobby Orr
2. Mario Lemieux
3. Wayne Gretzky
4. Gordie Howe
5. Phil Esposito
6. Jaromir Jagr
7. Charlie Conacher
8. Guy Lafleur
9. Bobby Hull
10. Jean Beliveau
But it becomes very arbitary at this point and easier to group them as numbers ranked 1 through 20 or something. Maurice Richard and Howie Morenz would probably be next on the list.
Rangers had them dead to rights in Game 4. Then the 5 major that Neilson completely miscoached. Then Ron Francis happened
U r right to a point but trust me watching him play during that era he was a beast and the perfect power forward to play with Super Mario
Yes he was a great power forward. Not trying to say he wasn't. Just that he'd have never put up 50 goal hundred point seasons without Mario. @@lenkennedy7488 ya i get it. Cam Neely was prob the best overall PW in the league. If he played with Mario he would prob got 70 goals a season
U forgot 2 mention Adam Graves slashing Mario n breaking his hand causing him to miss 6 games. But Jagr n Barrasso took over n beat the Rangers without Mario
😀
I’m going to go out on a limb and say the devils were ok with getting Stevens. Just a hunch.
You mean to tell me that Washington will one day beat Pittsburgh in the playoffs?!? Freakin spoiler alert! Ruined the whole series for me Shannon! (Lol)
penguinsnet
lol Jk
They looked like a dynasty....then they ran into the Islanders in 1993.
