  • I'm a 24 year old (At the time of uploading) adult beginner from Norway, and I wanted to see if it was possible to learn to play the violin as an adult. This is the first instrument I learned to play.
    This video is a collection of all the videos I recorded since I first started to play the violin. From week 1 until today.
    I didn't think I could get this far in the short amount of time I've played :) I didn't really expect anything when i started. I just wanted to try and see how far i'll get :)
    I'm mostly self-taught. I had a teacher last year but only had a total of 8 lessons. Hoping to find a new teacher soon :) I hope you like this video. UPDATE: I got a teacher after 2 years and 5 months. I have one lesson every week.

    My mum started playing the violin after my father had left us. I was three and she always made me feel like I was a gem, though it must have taken her so much. She would wait until I was in bed, then do the dishes and pick up the bow. I would fall asleep to music that accompanied me into my dreams. The Bach Toccata was one of her favourites. It was thirteen years in June since she passed away and I still hear her every night. Bless the music.

    I truly enjoy playing Violin. My husband, a professional violinist, taught me to play in 1997. I was in my early 40s, I am 72 now, and am still playing. Never stopped playing together. If you are a beginner, don't hesitate, keep in mind that the Violin is a difficult instrument to learn, but if you study daily, you will make it. Just, Don't give up. For me wasn't too difficult because I do play piano.... Good lock....it doesn't matter your age if you want to learn!😊 Good luck... Violin 🎻🎻 and 🎹🎹

      It's easier to learn at a young age, but adult beginners who are committed enough can reach a very high level. I play viola in a professional orchestra (though I'm not a full-time professional musician), and I started at 17. One of my colleagues is a full-time professional violinist who started playing at 50 and went pro at 66 after retiring from another job.

    Its never too late for anything. We spend our entire lives learning. I personally dislike whenever anyone says "oh, I'm too old for this". No, you're not. Your attitude is the only thing stopping you.

    • @DaDarkGuy
      @DaDarkGuy 7 років тому +17

      I mean, being 80 years old is too old for being an Olympic athlete.

    • @LlamaDrama142
      @LlamaDrama142 7 років тому +50

      +DaDarkGuy anything within reason...you're not going to shoot fireballs out if your hands because you want it either. I'm talking about people who have the misconception that there's an age limit when it comes to learning new things.
      An if an 80 year old wants to be an Olympic champ that bad, why not pursue it anyway? There's a saying that goes "shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars.". He may not get there, but he can become a very fit 80 year old

    • @DDG2023
      @DDG2023 7 років тому +2

      Your brain loses the plasticity required to effectively learn new skills as you grow older. Other than that psychical constraint, anything possible... is possible.

    • @LlamaDrama142
      @LlamaDrama142 7 років тому +16

      +DDG yes, and your metabolism also begins to slow with age. But it still is possible to learn. There are 70 year old college graduates out there. And there are also fit 70 year olds - Silvester Stallone for example.
      Im not just being optimistic. It's fact. Yes, aging in life will present you with more hurdles, but it doesn't have to mean older people can't achieve what younger people can. That's been disproven enough.
      Btw no, I'm not an old man trying to size myself up with the younger generation LOL I'm 24. I've just seen enough not to assume age is a barrier for anything. Ever seen Ninja Warrior? There have been guys on the older side(40-50) who have actually beaten out their competition of 20 year olds.

      Kid..I didn’t start until 14 and I’ve been in 2 signed bands. You aren’t old and you’re not behind. If you want to go to the professional realm..you very much can.
      The difference between an intermediate and a professional is an intermediate practices until they get it right..a professional practices until they cannot get it wrong. 8 hours a day. 4 hours practicing ONLY weaknesses, 2 hours of active listening, 1 hour of visualization (both techniques and future success) and 1 hour on repertoire.
      As your weaknesses diminish, up your repertoire so that you are practicing 7 quality hours a day, visualizing for an hour and incorporating breathing and relaxation techniques. Being a professional is a full life style and you must leave only room for quality exercise, quality relationships, quality rest and quality sleep. That’s how you get there and that’s how you stay there.

But your video is another proof that you can master something with one essential thing: WORK WORK AND WORK. Thanks a lot for the inspiration. You deserve to progress, you work hard! ❤️❤️❤️💪💪💪

      Katikut talent is an aspect though
      Ive been playing Bass for over 8 years, and I know people who have never played before who can pick it up and play it as good as if not better than me in a matter of a few hours
      Working harder is fantastic advice, but there are people who are just naturally more gifted at things

    • @chrismace279

      Katikut people are entitled to say what they want. some people can't afford such luxury, others struggle to learn with learning disabilities. to say your fed up with those say they wish they could do this. some really can't. for instance. I can never continue learning more in college or university because I don't have the ability to learn more. I struggled in elementary and high school.
      so I think it's a bit harsh saying what you did because some of these people, you don't know their capabilities as well as they do. or the fact if they can afford it. I'm just saying to be a little more open minded and mindful of others who may not be able to succeed

      I used to play piano and i would practise for an hour an a half or two hours every day and yet i still failed my grade four twice. I find people who can play music with ease and yes some hard work extrememly talented, but music is a talent. Some of us happen to do better than others and that skill should be appreciated.

    • @lauwarm8550
      @lauwarm8550 7 років тому +5

      Briana Foster But also not the time because as a child you have got a lot of free time so it's easy to spend it with practicing. As an adult you probably have to work, do the household, maybe also to look after your kids. So I think when you get adult and you haven't been learning an instrument yet you might see it as a hobby like collecting stuff and think that practice is a secondary thing. So most adults just simply don't practice enough and give up because if you don't practice you won't get achievements. That's why it doesn't make fun and seems very fast a waste of time.

    • @petroskefallinos8735
      @petroskefallinos8735 7 років тому +4

      It came from the idea that the brain stops developing when we become adults...I started learning the piano when this was still a thing and i had a few people ''discouraging'' me based on that. I proved them wrong! :D

    • @annbellgrau
      @annbellgrau 7 років тому +2

      Yeah, like I think I learn waay better now than I did when I was a child, back then I didn't have the patience and didn't take anything seriously. Now I feel like if I really want to learn something I just have to concentrate and now I know how to learn, as a child I didn't think that much. It's the same with studying, now I know how to study, I have developed some techniques, but when I was a child I didn't know and didn't care that much.

The best bass player I have ever known didn't start playing until his freshman year of high school, but by the time he graduated, he had become so good that in his freshman year of college he was (and still is) the principal bass player of University of Tennessee. How did he get so good in only four years? he practiced for 5 hours a day, every day for 4 years

I didn't play much for over the last ten years or so. Then a friend bought a nice Ibanez electric guitar. It felt lovely to hold and the action is nice, this inspired me to get myself a similar guitar. I have really gotten back into playing again and got a portable electric piano a few weeks ago. My work colleague and I were putting rubbish into a bin and found a violin. We talked about how we wanted to learn and ever since I have thought about it until I caved in and got one today :-) Seeing this long lady progress has inspired me this evening. I will get lessons so as to not develop bad habits or technique. Great video :-) many thanks x

    • @vitorfernandes4428
      @vitorfernandes4428 3 роки тому +94

      It's totally different. Adults will learn way quicker and that's because children don't focus as much. Many kids play because their parents want them to. All adults play because they really want to. And that makes a huge difference. You could be practicing for hours on end with no real progression of you're not really into it 100%

      @@vitorfernandes4428 that is so right! i played violin for 3 years as a kid (10 to 13) and at best i was maybe as her at 7months. I barely practised. I had 2-3 lessons a week, and i played at home only like 30-45mins once a week, plus i didn't give a shit as i wanted to play harp or piano and not violin, but my parent's couldn't afford these instruments.
      motivation is a massive factor, and you still as an adult can become really really great in a couple of years no matter if you start in 20s 30s 40s or later.

    Nice job! During the last half of my senior high school year (1994) at Walhert High School (Dubuque, IA), I picked up the violin and taught myself for a few days. The following week I was in the school’s ensemble. We played musicals, at galas, for the school Mass, and other school functions. Mr. Dave Resnick, the music director, even gave the solo part in the musical “Bye Bye Birdie” to me. It was one of the best time of my life. Thank you so much Mr. Resnick for giving lending me your violin and for giving me the opportunity!
    That was nearly 30 yrs ago and I haven’t touched the violin since but this is giving me inspiration to learn it again.
