- We came down to South Africa for the Cape Argus Tour. It is the biggest cycling event in the world, probably.
On Friday, to stretch out the legs we went on pre-race ride [~130km why not?] to the Cape of Good Hope [I love this name!]. The road by the ocean side was quiet and a lille deserted.
Suddenly, I spotted a white ostrich on my left, then this beast jumped on the road from the right and started chasing my friends! It was a little scary at first, but then I thought I gonna fell of my bike from laughter. The ostrich didn't have any problem to keep up at 50km/h and apparently they do 70km/h with no sweat.
Luckily the creature decided to leave us alone, as we were running out of road. The Cape of Good hope is a dead end way.
My guess he wanted to show off in front of his girlfriend, i bet she was very impressed!

Giant ostriches are extremely fast. They can run continuously at speeds greater than 30-35 mph. Top speed exceeds 40 mph. He wasn't chasing, he was joining in. If he wanted to catch those cyclists, he easily could have.

My family was raising a baby emu when I was little. That thing grew up ridiculously fast. Went from sitting in your hand to like 3 feet tall in a matter of a couple months it seems.
Anyway, at around that age (3 feet tall) my Mom took me and my brother to an empty state park with the Emu. We went to the empty trailor lots grid, and rode bikes around weaving around wherever we wanted, and the emu was chasing us all around. It was so much fun.
Then, when the emu was big enough to stay confined to the emu enclosure, we gave the emu back to grandma and didn't see them for a year or so. By that point, it was full grown and hated everybody. LOL!
BTW, pro-tip. Never look into an emu's big ol' billiard-ball eyes. Or do... but realize that if you do, the emu WILL try to peck your eyes out. You think you're having a nice friendly moment looking into their big glossy eyes, and they lunge at you.

I don’t have that cool of a story, but my aunt had chickens once, including a rooster named Robin Hood. He was the meanest animal I’ve met. I and my cousins used to literally play “chicken” with him: rush into his yard and run away screaming at the top of our lungs. Once he cornered and almost attacked my 4 year old sister. I grabbed her and RAN for our lives.
I used to ask my aunt to have us for dinner whenever Robin Hood would be the main course. Unfortunately, a coyote ravaged the coop and ol’ Robin died a glorious warrior’s death, defending his hens. Still mad to this day that I didn’t get a bite.
Really puts into perspective how fast an ostrich can run! Wow.
