Just got back into 40k. Had space marines as a kid and wanted a gross nurgley challenge as an adult. Interesting to see a couple different ways of painting and the techniques youve used.
Welcome back into the hobby Josh 😎 Same for me! I had blood angels as a kid and now as an adult getting back into the hobby I was ready to break bad and turn to chaos. I have a showcase up somewhere on the channel of the whole DG army if you’re interested to see some of the conversions etc that I had a go at.
Thanks! I'm embracing the chaos as well. Finished my plague marines and now I'm working on some poxwalkers. Love all the gross flesh and bone on all the death guard minis. I'll check out the video. I'll have to upload one of my own when I'm done 😁
I've fallen in love with using the little-known Agrax Earthshade Gloss on my Death Guard. Slap it on over the green armor and it gives it such a nice browned, slimy looking texture, like there's just fluids oozing out of every crevice
an inspiring video as of late, i got back into painting my pile of shame and its def helped me realize as long as i painted it the best i can thats good enough, i might even be able to get em lookin nice like yours eventually. those older death guard look great, might have to try and chase a few down
Really awesome vid Mike! I really liked the grim dark version you made. the way you build up from really dark to vibrant highlights looks great! The Blue one was also really cool and unique. Keep up the great work! As an idea for another video, maybe some age of sigmar stuff? I'd love to see your take on Serephan!
Hey thanks so much 😀 your timing is perfect as Gordon and I were picking out a Serephan model for an upcoming video. You’ve convinced me to commit to painting one 🤌
Army Painter has a number of new metallics in their Speedpaint range, but those particular paints create less of the shadow/highlight than most of the others. Still nice, so you might like them.
I'm new to Warhammer and I really like the way you painted the first one 5:30 , what paint sets should I try to buy? Are they're any specific tools I should get too?
Hey mate! Welcome to the hobby, you are going to love it. My advice would be that you are allowed to be open to different paints and products and don’t tie yourself down to one brand. Games Workshop and Army Painter Fanatic Paints are my current favourites but I find great results with other brands as well. A wet palette and some nice (but not overly expensive) brushes will help you greatly. Feel free to join our discord if you like. In there we have a wide range of painters and of course myself that will be happy to help you learn and answer questions 😀discord.gg/kkzQR8rv
How would you use the Grimdark style on vehicles and other large models? I feel like the much larger flat plates would be really hard to paint with a sponge without having it look bad?
Check out the video I have on the channel for the Blood Angels Dreadnought. It has large smooth panels but I think the style still works well on them. Let me know what you think 🤔
Hi Mike! Love the work you did with the Grim Dark Variant of the Death Guard and I would love to use it with my army. Some of the models have cloth on them, but I didn’t see any on the model you used. If you were to use this same method on a model with the cloth, what colors would you use for it?
Hey! Thanks for letting me know that you enjoyed it. Good question. I think I would likely use cream and bone colours for the cloths on the basic infantry and for elite infantry maybe crimson reds and important characters maybe even purple or blue. I think those colours would pair well and the great thing about the bone colours is that you could weather and stain them so dirt and blood would really stand out.
there are some contrasts that can be used instead of metalics, but they don't have the same effect. Or in other words, there are no (Citadel) metal paints in contrast form. Warhammer has a tutorial for painting a Myphitic Blight-hauler with contrast paints available on UA-cam, where they substitute Balthazar Gold with Gore-Grunta Fur, and Leadbelcher with Basilicanum Grey.
I want to get in to the hobby of course death gaurd im into the brighter greens but it looks flat Maybe some day you could do some detailing for the contrast one
Yeah true! Check out my Death Guard Army Showcase video if you like. In there I have a range of different DG units including daemons etc painted with contrasts but with extra highlight steps. You might find some bits you like there.
GW close match is Mournfang and for Army Painter I would say Leather Brown in their Fanatic range is closest I can get. That’s me comparing to what I have up on my shelf 👍

love the video my favorite is the original white and green 😀
👍
Fun fact: Deathworld Forest is almost identical to Vallejo Russian Uniform WWII for those that prefer dropper bottles:)
I do enjoy a dropper bottle. Good tip!
Closer to lufftwaffe camouflage

Now I’m excited, that will be cool!
Love how you included different color schemes! They came out amazing! Definitely feeling inspired now!
Awesome thanks Sarah 😀 Glad they helped
Amazing colors and the fact you did 4 models in one video is next level. Stoked to try some of these ideas. Thank you
Thanks for the feedback 😀 if you try some out you’ll have to let me know how you go
@@flashingbadgerpainting just getting into the hobby slow process of gathering supplies at the moment but I started a boss snikrot
Love me some Orks and that’s a great model to kick off with.
I like the plague Ultramarines:)
Thanks!
The Eiffel 65 joke took me out 😂
🤣🤣 haha I had forgotten about that
Sweet video! Love me some Chaos. I messed around with metallic silver-ish bases, and then army painter contrast colors over the top.
Yeah nice that sounds like a great idea 👍

Hey thanks Richard for pointing me in the right direction. I’ll give them a try 😀
Blue one is SO COOL!
Thanks mate! That one was fun. I think a whole army like that could look wild 😀
Painted my first mini , it was a space marine heros s3 krug. It came out amazing, thank you so much your guide helped alot.
That’s awesome news. Well done on the first mini! I’m glad the guide helped and I look forward to hearing about what you tackle next 🤌👍
I am planning to hunt down rest of the series 3 space marine heros gonna make a squad . I sent a pic of the death guard i did in ig xd
I just saw the come through, I’ll go check it out 😀
A blue death guard... this is what happens when Ultramarines stop calling each other 'brother' every 12 seconds...
😅🙌
Great job with them all. But especially that grim dark PM, i miiight just have a go at that style. Thanks!
Thanks so much! You’ll have to let me know how you go with it 😀
I’m such a fan of your content, already so professional and these minis are insane ! 😍
That’s awesome 😀 thanks so much! Sometimes I wonder if anyone is really watching and enjoying it so this means a lot. Made my day 😀

20:31 speed paint has metallics now
Perfect timing, I just painted with them this weekend and really enjoyed them. Thanks for the heads up though!
That grim dark scheme is super cool! Tempts me to bust out some DG lol
Haha thanks 😀 do it! Treat yourself.
Thanks, this was amazing :)
Glad you liked it! 😀
I like the contrast a lot, what varnish would you use?
I like to use a matte varnish thinned down a little and brushed on instead of sprayed,
Great video dude
Hey thanks so much for letting me know!
What did you use on the leather straps for the Grimdark model? Amazing channel btw. Definitely subscribing.
Hey mate, welcome to the channel 😀 the straps are a base of Mournfang brown and then a cheeky highlight of any lighter brown. 👍

really did the blue one, great work
Thanks Todd! Was a lot fun putting this video together. More chaos landing on the first of Jan for info 👀
May I ask when u did the grimdark paint job may I ask what is the model because I am trying to find it
Oh good question. Now where is this marine from 🤔 probably the Dark Imperium box set. I feel like I would have had some spares from there.
Hey great video. For the initial lining with Rhinox Hide. Was this like a 1:1 ratio with water? Would Dryad Bark also work?
Yep 1:1 ratio 👍
I like the brown to be quite dark. So you could use dryad with a touch of black mixed in if you want something similar.
@@flashingbadgerpaintingcool. I thought dryad bark was darker?😊
@christianwhite8411 *spins and looks at paint rack* ignore me! If it’s darker, use that 👍
What paint do you use for the bone sticking out of the shoulder?
Hey, from memory this was Zandri Dust as a base and then I’ll often glaze some darker browns like mournfang and rhinox. Hope that helps!
@@flashingbadgerpainting Yes it does thanks. Cheers for the tutorials btw, love your work 😊
What is a gw or army painter alternative to the harvest brown paint?
GW close match is Mournfang and for Army Painter I would say Leather Brown in their Fanatic range is closest I can get.

Official "Blue" remix ringtone to download for my Nokia when?
Hahaha 🤣🤦♀️

No worries 😀
