    just a suggestion a balloon inserted inside the paper tube might and inflated, might make the job a bit easier and more accurate .

    brilliant method, can't believe I never thought of doing this, although a small airbrush kit for painting models could be a good substitute for the spray can

      +Luke Knights already ahead of you mate lol Thanks for comment. Its a working progress, other ideas include using carbon paper and other methods of sealing paper or other media against the cylinder wall. There will be a follow up video coming soon on people suggestions which I'll try out. Thanks again - matt

    You can use a thin wall plastic pipe that's larger than the bore. Cut the pipe lengthwise. Fold it in on itself and use that to hold the paper.

    Good effort mate, while I was watching I wondered about using the paper in the liner and squirting expanding foam into the tube? All the best, Den.

    Just an idea, and I really do not know if it would work:
    You could use photo paper (yes, the old fashioned stuff we used before digital photos), put it inside the zylinder in a redlight room and then use an LED or small tungsten bulb, that fit's inside all the ports.
    This should give you a damn accurate picture of the whole thing. Ofc that inculdes a lot of chemicals and stuff, but maybe you know somebody who does that as a hobby ^^

      +Emilia Fairbrook Yeah that would work, also using carbon paper pressed against white paper would give a good impression, good idea, albeit abit complex - thanks for the comment - matt

      Pony Power I like your carbon paper idea
      Maybe I will try this one out...I don't really want to spray my cylinder full of paint ^^
      Or was the result with the airbrush really that much better?

      I understand your concerns but a quick dip in some acetone cleans the cylinder out. You could even leave it there, the engine will burn with a bit of a funny smell for a few days but wont be too much of a problem. Petrol is an excellent solvent lol

    You could kill two birds with a balloon. It would expand the paper tight against the wall of the cylinder and hold it securely at the same time.

      You could also spray a bit closer to the ports, just get the nozzle of the spray can as close as possible, and I reckon 2 or 3 sprays should do the trick :)

      I actually used the balloon idea while attempting this and it works wonders! I found that using regular (ball-shaped) balloons helped, but the long cylindrical balloons (like the ones used for making balloon animals) worked the best. Also, too much paint will still bleed on the paper, even with a baloon. 1-2 quick sprays, and a gentle shake of the cylinder seems to yield the best results (aka -sharpest lines).

      Didn't know someone already had this idea with the baloon :(. Thinking of this now i believe the baloon rubber could be a little ridgid. But a condom would be worth a try, less pressure little stress on the paper sheet, probably less deformation in the port area. But no one can tell untill you try it out ;).

  • @riktimmermans5606

    wat actually works a lot better, is to tape the paper to the cylinder the same way you do it, then blacken your fingertip with graphite and rub it from the inside against the cylinderports. It will leave a very nice marking of the porting of the cylinder. And you dont have to remove a lot of paint afterwards.......

    ice cream tube lid would be one option for plastic maybe.. if it's not already been mentioned.
    but I think papers best as the fiber will such up excess ink whereas plastics more leftly just to run.

    I align the top edge of the paper with the top of the bore as an index as well as squaring up the page to it. Paint is ok but my dirty old fingers work ok to mark it from the inside too and easy to use a fine liner pen to finish it off once the paper is out.

    if u used the map u have to layout a fresh paper u can put holes in the center of the port locations .. prior to inserting and painting .this should allow the paint through the ports to flow better so can maybe be done with less paint avoiding the runs

    • @jasonwhite8722
      @jasonwhite8722 5 років тому

      thinking about trex's balloon comment .. using rc tire foam inside the paper tube could both support the paper against the cylinder wall and absorb some of the extra paint if you have the holes mentioned in the above comment .. also use flat black .. it by far dries the fastest. other thought are to heat up the cylinder before painting to aid in drying time .. maybe a fan lightly vacuuming air from inside the paper tube through the foam will attract the paint to the ports better? another idea for the transfers is to extend the paint spray tip. so it can be inserted into the port before spraying.

    • @juliolausell4399
      @juliolausell4399 9 років тому +2

      Yes, like the balloon idea, but in this case use a piece of sofa cushion cut into the shape of a cylinder. Stuff it into a pvc pipe that is smaller than the bore of the cylinder, and with a stick or anything that will push the foam cushion out of the pvc pipe, leaving it inside of the paper cylinder, the foam cushion will push against the paper. I'm trying my best to explain what I mean. Or in other words use a pvc pipe and a stick to deposit a piece of foam cushion inside the paper cylinder. P.S. pony power thank you for your video. I like to teach people what i know, and like to learn from others.

      +rynousa IT NOW HAS A NAME that I will never forget =).... Lol........ Believe it or not. I've taken a piston to a local welder for welding some aluminum on to top of the piston for more compression. I shaped the top of the piston myself so that the valves don't hit the piston. Then I brought the weight back to what it weighed before the welding. It's a four stroke engine, the compression is now around 13.5/1 or higher. This motor is a chinese 90cc honda clone. I don't know if it would work for a bigger cc engine, but it's worked just fine so far with this little motor. The sound of the exhaust changed a lot, and I now run octane booster. P.S. Hooray for the Tampon Method!!!!!!! Lol. Merry Christmas!!!!!!

    What about putting a piece of carbon paper in, facing inwards, wrap your paper in there, then just give it a solid rub with a wooden stick or something? That should transfer the exact marks very definitively and be very evident between rubbed areas and the actual port impressions.

  • @willacewallace5905
    @willacewallace5905 4 роки тому +1

    Why not just measure with a micrometer tail zeroing at TDC. Then find find each measurement. Take the total piston travel using 180 to divide all the numbers into using full piston movement (down stroke)... This will allow you to scale the design.
    So, for example, if total piston travel is 100mm. Do the math and you will see how many degrees each event and degree duration each event occurs.
    In short, if you have the entire engine, best way is to use a degree wheel looking to see how many degrees it takes for ports to open, how many degrees they are open for. If you know the stroke travel, those degrees can be converted to travel numbers.

    • @dirtygarageguy
      @dirtygarageguy  4 роки тому

      What you described doesnt work. Let's just say that yoy have your 100mm cylinder, at 90deg crank angle. How far are you down the stroke? Becaus if you think it's 50mm your 100% wrong.

    Oh my goodness ... why don't you make a finger little dirty and rub from the inside of the paper over ervery port and edge ? Its faster and exactlier without the color everywhere ! Next thing is, for what do you need this? For measure a portheight i don't need a procedure like this. To see, which cylinder have a bigger port area compare to the other i have two eyes in my head. The max. timing on a two stroke cylinder is wellknown (135°transfer and ~200° exhaust) and the only thing you should do is to match this with the widest port area you can get. Really important is a degree wheel on the crankshaft and ready is a good cylinder. Matching crankcase to cylinder is also clear.

    • @dirtygarageguy
      @dirtygarageguy  8 років тому

      +ariane11970 "timing on a two stroke cylinder is well known (135°transfer and ~200° exhaust)" port timing is different for different cylinders, that's the point and this is an experiment to make measuring and comparing the timing and port area easier to see. A degree wheel is also very important, however this is testing the method not actually taking measurements, that comes later.

    • @bboschjohn
      @bboschjohn 8 років тому

      +ariane11970
      Yes I agree with what you say a shadow map is nice but I
      would not get my port open timings off the shadow map there are too many anomaly’s(stacking tolerances, port chamfers and such) accuracy is marginal at best, the first thing to do is to degree out the port openings in degrees from true TDC with the engine partially assembled, these numbers can and will give a correlation to tuned performance of the engine package, if you are going to design a tunedpipe for the engine you will need to know port timing in degrees anyways as most all pipe design programs will ask for this information If you want to know the port heights in MM or Inches most good two stroke design software packages have programs for doing that and doing it that way is much more accurate

    Just stick a balloon in there. Paper clips would be entertaining to watch, but not very effective...

      your wonderful art work . buy the way tuning houses such as malossi. stage 6. are selling cranks with longer rod for this very reason . more midrange power . why dont you ask them if im right or wrong .

      I don't get what you mean? Bit of a weird comment. Stroker kits or rod to stroke ratio is based around how perpendicular the force applied to the crankpin to the crank angle.
      This can (depending how far you go) increase torque in the midrange but also shifts the dynamic balance upwards towards the piston. Shifting the dynamic balance away from the centre of rotation increases the load on the wrist pin and crnakshaft bearings, increasing resistance and wear.
      This also effect piston mean speed - increasing it, which effects port timing and final increases the mass of the engine. Mass increase comes from not only the longer rod, but also the longer cylinder, unless material is removed from the crank and/or piston - but this is rare.
