I dont know why, but using a gunlance on a khezu is so good. I tried it randomly in FU to see how bad i was with GL, surprisingly it was one of the easiest matchups. I guess when khezu does his static vibration atack when he plugs his tail like thing to the ground, you can just evade with jump backwards and use your shells to attack him. The range of the shells is just enough to avoid the damage from khezu and deal damage to him, its just satisfying. And overall you got good stabbing atck and pretty nice defensive shield. The slowness of the wespon pairs very well with the clumsiness and slowness of khezu… its just amazing.
Yep! The first time I had a good time with GL was the Khezu training quest lol, it just made a lot of sense. You can block his thunder aura and use wyvernfire from outside of it, it's like all of what Khezu makes difficult for other weapons, Gunlance just works with 😄 I'm glad you had a good time! 🙂
a year later and i'm back to learn how to funlance eta: One of the nice things about portable 3rd being a high rank only game is it feels very possible and doable to make a little of everything to try out. The guild card badges are all very doable things it feels like (except maybe crowns....), and one of them requires making a bunch of high rarity weapons from each class, and I've found msyelf going "well i have it i might as well try it out", whcih is really nice. Gunlance and LBG have both been surprise favourites from this dip into the weapon box grateful as ever for the weapon tutorials, even as i know they're tedious and boring to make
That's a good point tbh G-Rank equipment can require quite a lot of investment and that can take a long time. Gunlance is an excellent weapon, though tbh I'm still very unfamiliar with it in this game 😅 it's one of my favorites in MHFU. I really like making these videos, but there is some parts of it that are rough 🤧 and I'm realizing more and more recently that I have the worst time management skills ever 😭 I still need to make the light and heavy bowgun videos, but they're going to be more in depth than these, like the Bow one is lol Thank you for watching! 😁
As a relatively versed mhp3rd player, (im a switch axe main) even though i don't need it, your videos are great beginner's guide to monster hunter in general. Keep up the good work 👍
Yeahh, but we may be getting more frontier stuff since they added Espinas and some other things into Sunbreak. I think it'd be a huge waste to ignore frontier entirely, I hope they're able to implement more in MH6 or at least the other 6th gen game. Here's hoping! 😄
One day, a lancer thought their life didn't have enough boom, and the Gunlance was invented, haha. In all seriousness, though, I love the weapon, but it seems to me Capcom always treated it as something of a redheaded stepchild until Gen 5. Maybe they didn't know how to balance all the versatility of the weapon? As much as I love it, i wish it had a but more uniqueness to it, maybe as a true middle ground between ranged and melee with shots traveling quite a bit farther and the damage of the blasts actually corresponding to the element in the weapon rather than being just fire. In any case a very good video to help the aspiring Gunlancer!
Thanks, I'm glad you think so! And yeah I think the dev teams are a bit too careful sometimes when they balance things, but also, maybe they just know better than me 😅😅😅
Gunlance is number 2 on my favorite weapons list But i have skill issue and lack of knowledge on how to effectively build its armor, still a very fun wepon to use
Gunlance always kind of appealed to me, same with LBG, it just seemed so badass, but I could never use it comfortably 😭😭 Now that I've got some years with the game under my belt... I'm no pro, but at least now I can have fun with it 😎😎😎

Yeah, I'm not too sure, I haven't used GL long enough to say, but it is a bit odd in some games, I think the High/G Rank scaling in general shouldn't be so broad, maybe, a bit more thought and deliberateness put into certain breakpoints etc. maybe, I dunno, I'm not a MH dev 😅😅 Either way, I really like the moveset and the contrast to Lance, and it's different enough that I actually prefer it over lance for some fights, if it's any example, in MHFU I think Lance is VERY good vs Tigrex, but I'd prefer Gunlance when fighting Plesioth, I'm sure I could use one against the other, but they feel just right like that, and I think that's neat.
Hey! Yeah I'd really like to, we'll just have to see for now though. It could be cool to cover or do a playthrough of all of the games tbh, including MHF2, Tri, MH1, MH Dos, etc. since they're just different enough, sometimes in drastic ways. Thanks for watching, I'm glad you like my videos!! 🙂
Thank you! Sorry to hear that 😓😓 Hopefully if you give the game a shot, you can get by with some familiarity from other games >.< Thanks for watching! 🙂
Portable 3rd was released in between Tri and 3U, so... I'm not really sure tbh. They may have added or changed one or two things, but this should be more or less accurate, I'd think. According to this page: monsterhunter.fandom.com/wiki/Gunlance#Monster_Hunter_Portable_3rd_2 The only difference is they fixed the auto guard glitch lol
Good question! I don't know. There isn't G rank, so the defense modifiers don't go that high, and there are some more things at work in this game such as Full Burst and charged shot modifiers. More info in the description, like I said; docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1V0XJT9B8cBbApcbom6ImRamK7XVy8ZDAlXlTwDpOtn4/edit#gid=1133464347 A normal shot full barage can do between 55 - 137 damage (not counting fire element) and a Wide Charged shot can do between 29 - 92 damage (not counting fire element) I'm assuming the defense modifiers at most go to like 80%? So at most, each of those would be 110 and 74 respectively, though, the Rising Slash from a Gunlance has a MV of 28. Taking the Evil Auspicious Rain (Amatsu) Gunlance just as a random end game ish gunlance (ignoring the shelling stats), it has an average ATP of ~228, after the example 80% defense mod, we get 51 damage, not including any hitzone. If we assume we hit a good hitzone of, say, 50, it gives us 25, though a Rising Slash is almost always followed by an Upward Thrust, which has a MV of 18, which would add another 16 damage, giving us 41. I want to say that doing both of those attacks is somewhat comparable in attack speed to a charged shot from a Level 4 Wide gunlance with Gunner King active, though it's a bit slower, but it's definitely spammable. It's worth testing to be sure, it seems stronger than MHFU at the very least, but I don't know if it's terribly practical or that useful, it seems like it could be, but I'm not a GL main.
One thing I just discovered with gunlance, if you have an auto block ability, when you shoot with gunlance, it blocks any attacks automatically, even if you're in the animation of "shooting"
Because it's an unintended mechanic, that's not how auto-guard is supposed to work, and you can't guard like that normally without it as far as I'm aware. No other game has that functionality with auto-guard.
It's really up to you. I like Longsword, but I think 3rd and 4th gen LS is kind of weak, not including MHGU's valor style of course. Pick a weapon that seems cool to you, use it enough to see if you like it, experiment with others 🙂
@@HeadHunter455 I wan't weapon that is all around. I think bowgun is good for that. Some blade weapon can't reach monster like agnaktor or I'm wrong? What weapon do you recommend for all around?
@@hydale5351 For a general use and effectiveness against most of the monster it usually either hammer or bow. Hammer is quite straight forward, with a good understanding of bonking, you can easily bonk your way to hr6 with hammer only. Guard +1/2 greatly reduces the knockback you take when guarding heavy attacks, so you can act almost immediately out of a guard. Evade is great too but there’s some monsters it’s kinda unreliable for, namely Brachydios (I know this guide is for P3rd but the same mechanics apply to 3G/3U)
@@emblemblade9245 i don't think you know what you're talking about, there is a cataclysm of diffenece between evading and blocking something. And brachydios is historically an awful match-up for guarding, some would say almost unplayable. He requires some counter intuitive dodging to beat with GL.
