    Just to be clear; after a lot of research I found that there were just as many icons with the capitol Nu (“N”) as lowercase (“v”). While it may seem odd, there doesn’t seem to be a hard rule- I found uppercase Omega with lowercase Nu and Omicron, and just about every variation thereof. It appears to be at the artists discretion. 🤷‍♂️

    • @renerpho
      @renerpho 2 роки тому +168

      True. Unfortunately, the original video shows the letter as *lower case*. It can be very clearly seen at 16:27 till 16:45. You then covered it up with the ground layer at 16:57, which may be why it didn't "reappear" when you removed the paint in the "repair".

    • @renerpho
      @renerpho 2 роки тому +63

      Regarding the "hard rule": The upper case Nu you found isn't upper or lower case at all, it's a "Greek uncial script" (search for that on Google to see what I mean). Whoever did this painting was not using an uncial script (maybe due to a lack of knowledge?), and was writing in actual lower cases.

    • @renerpho
      @renerpho 2 роки тому +75

      To correct myself: I think you mostly covered it with fill-in medium only around 17:44. Parts of the nu can last be easily seen shortly before that. There's a hint of it also later, around 23:25, but it's hard to make out from that perspective due to the direction of the lighting.

      @@alejocazu6 you are probably right, I could see a faint u shape on the right side. Which could be a v with a curved bottom. You can see it in this video in teh gold foil distress. If you follow the childs (left) eye brow to the right. There is an indication there of a letter by the inversion of movement. but you coudl throw it through some filters ot confirm...
      anyways..
      I complained about many things, and well the blue... bottom right corner.. still isn't to the rendition of the artists, since it has a white border... and a looser style of gentle flicks... almsot like you could guess teh weight and brus hthe person is using.
      The halo thing is still a thing... lol.. but meh mistke or not... doens't matter... he can do as he pleases.. its still good work.

    Setting a good example. If a trained and extremely experienced proffesional can make a mistake and publically acknowledge their error then anyone should. In fact it's one of my favorite lessons to teach.
    My favorite story around that was Citi Tower in New York. The details are complex but the simple version is the architect whom designed the structure missed a possible wind risk. Once it was brought to his attention, he checked the math, came up with a solution, and informed the Citi Corporation. The problem was eventually fixed, though it cost a couple million dollars. There was no long drawn out trial. Citi Bank and the architect merely sat down in a room and worked out a settlement. In the end, Citi Bank merely took the amount the architect's liability insurance would pay without question despite it only being half of what it cost to rectify the error. So it costs the architect nothing out of his own pockets. All because the architect came forward with a solution and owned up to the mistake.

    • @aserta
      @aserta 2 роки тому +12

      Take that in versus to the story with the tower that burned everyone around because its glass front acted like a lens. It's in London, and it burned car paint even before being finished. And guess what, it wasn't even the first time this has happened. Vdara death ray in LA.

    • @Mike-hp2dd
      @Mike-hp2dd 2 роки тому +15

      Hmm - well, the Citicorp Center crisis was far more complex - as you say. The flaw found by a Princeton engineering student named Diane Hartley. The architect in question actually considered suicide when wind tunnel tests revealed that the building would be subject to wind stresses that would cause it to fall once every 55 years - and once every 16 years if a power outage caused to the tuned mass damper to malfunction. But since the specification of welded load braces were changed to bolted - it relieved the architect of legal responsibility. Fearing a panic and with the good luck of having a newspaper strike going on at the time - welding support trusses went on at night after a secret meeting in which only the city's highest officials and the head of the welders union were privy to, (every available welder was mobilized since it was hurricane season). The discovery of the defect was made by Hartley in June, 1978, the tests and confirmation of her discovery were made in July, and work began in August. The cost was far higher than a couple of million dollars - Citicorp has never revealed how much, but one of the contractors was paid 8 million alone. The whole affair was kept secret by all involved until 1995 when Joe Morgenstern of The New Yorker reported it. It's online somewhere.

  • @AlexBelethe

    I was curious about what these letters meant. On the wikipedia page on halos it says the following:
    "A cruciform halo, that is to say a halo with a cross within, or extending beyond, the circle is used to represent the persons of the Holy Trinity, especially Jesus, and especially in medieval art. In Byzantine and Orthodox images, inside each of the bars of the cross in Christ's halo is one of the Greek letters Ο Ω Ν, making up ὁ ὢν-"ho ōn", literally, "the Existing One"-indicating the divinity of Jesus. At least in later Orthodox images, each bar of this cross is composed of three lines, symbolising the dogmas of the Trinity, the oneness of God and the two natures of Christ."
    It's hard to see if omicron is a small or capital letter (o vs O), but as the omega is clearly small: ω not Ω, I assume that the the nu ought to be small as well: ν instead of Ν.

    It's funny how much we passively learn from you, Julian. A friend asked for help with the lettering on a sign bc he had redone it several times and it wasn't working. I sat down to work on it, but then thought of you and how you spend a lot of time LOOKING before you do anything. So I stopped and looked, and the problem with getting the lettering right was the texture of the background. The lettering was never going to look right until we addressed the background. Thanks! We redid the background, the lettering went on great, and the sign is installed

    This is one of your best videos, because it shows EVERYONE makes mistakes and here's how you fix it. I always say to my employees when they've made an error and I tell them how to fix it; "I know how to fix this, because I made this same mistake." Great job!!

    Nice little addition.
    While mistakes can surely happen to anyone, the use of reversible materials and techniques makes this process easy to fix.
    It also helps to reassure any potential clients that if something happens to the painting, whether its a mistake in conservation or something else, that the conservator has the integrity and ability to solve that.

    I’m always fascinated by the detail and meticulousness of your work. I really respect that not having the tool for the job is never a show stopper for you, you either create it or design it, bravo. Reversing your previous transgression was another gem of a restoration session. I did have to giggle though when you called the ‘omega’ above the head on halo a ‘w’.

    "making mistakes" should be my middle name. I do a lot of improvements around the house, my friends cannot believe what I do, they don't see all the mistakes I had to redo.
    So happy to see you post a redo, and how easy it was for you using the proper materials.

    That was a fascinating video. You not only showed how the retouching can be removed if necessary, you also showed something that's not often acknowledged - It's all very well to get things right the first time, and that's what we all aim for. But the true professional knows how to repair the inevitable stuff-ups that are simply a result of human nature, and come up with the correct result at last. Much respect!

    One has to own one's mistakes, as well as their achievements, otherwise they can never move on. And it had the added benefit of allowing you to show us how easy it is to reverse your work. I suspect you might have a few viewers who are familiar with icons, and recognized the shapes in the paints as symbols, otherwise, someone wouldn't recognize a squiggly line as a symbol, and they know where they would be. Good job correcting your mistake.
