I think I've seen all of your retouchings and this one by far is my favorite. It's really a thing of beauty. With only the bare minimum of retouching you were able to bring the artists work back to life.
I love watching your videos for so many reasons, but one is that as an artist I have learned a lot about what to consider when I make a painting. I’ve been watching for years and have adjusted materials (for example I was taught to use dammar varnish in school, but I switched out of that because of the yellowing). Pretty much all modern canvas have staples, but as I start stretching my own canvas I will switch over to tacks. Sometimes it’s fun when I’m painting to think of the conservator in the future who may be working on it too, should I be so lucky as to have my work last that long and be that significant hahaha. It means a lot seeing the care that you put into what you do.
That was awesome, so much unnecessary touching up before Julian had got the staples out. I think Julian's estimation of 25 to 30 years since the last attempted restoration is probably spot on. I've been repairing electrics and rewiring houses for close to 50 years and the older plasticised electrical tape used to go rigid and brittle, the newer tape 30 years ago tends to stay flexible, Upton a point. Great job Julian, really happy for the paintings owner who gets a beautifully conserved piece of art back on their wall. Thanks for posting.
Julian - I have watched all your videos and I am becoming more inclined to believe you are a magician, and not just a conservator. To bring back that sky with that amount of damage is a work of art in itself.
Greatly enjoyed the video. Extraordinary restoration as we have come to expect, and Kit added a light note. Who of us hasn't mugged a little behind the teachers' back?
Came here from Dan Avidans post about tye completed restoration of this painting and i think i just found a new love for art restoration! Such amazing work
He has mentioned that he will keep the secret of his solvents to himself. Mainly to keep people from trying to be hobby conservators and doing more damage than good. Knowing people probably a wise precaution.
There is an older video where he talks about it! He uses a small section and starts with distilled water and works his way up the different solvents until he finds the one that is the least harsh that works well
As many of your videos as I watch, the cleaning and removing of the old varnish NEVER ceases to amaze me, not to even mention the overpainting you had to remove. You Sir are a master of your craft, another beautiful job. Please keep the amazing videos coming, I know I absolutely love when you post a new video.
I think of all of the restorations I've seen you do this one is my favorite. For you to have done so much work and put in so much effort for the finished restoration to leave no impression that you or anyone else but the original artist was ever there... just wow.
Your expert understanding of chemistry and understanding of the medium and its chemical makeup, stability and and even it’s calculated level of age driven chemical and natural change is staggering… you are a rare master of your craft!
I also appreciate your ability to “see” the individual and signature painting style of the original master, and “mimic” the very individual style of the master in such an exacting way… your level of detail is one of a kind!!
Excellent video as always. Enjoyed Kitt's photobombing as a lighthearted addition. Guess I learned today to not stop the video too fast when I think it was over as there was the extra footage that was so funny. Keep them coming, highlight of my Monday mornings.

Wow! What a gorgeous result! Beautiful painting! At least this time the excessive over-painting was actually covering damage -- unlike that last one! Kit's antics in the background were pretty funny! 😂
Beautiful, beautiful restoration work. One would never know that this painting had been so damaged. I understand that's the desired effect, but your skill, especially in retouching, demonstrates your rare ability. As a lay person I am continually astonished at the quality of work that comes out of your studio.
After listening to you explain the limitations and difficulties of working with retouching paint as an unforgiving medium, I am all the more blown away by what you achieve, and have an even greater respect for the refined and near-perfect colour-matching and perceived blending that you are able to produce using years of trial, error and dedicated practice. This is one of the most amazing results I have seen, and I am sure the original artist would have been delighted by your recreation of these ethereal clouds. All the more for being cognicent of the intended shapes and strokes of the sky, instead of taking the less painstaking route of tentatively piecing together each complex dash and dot of colour. Thank you for sharing your expertise with the world (and now too with Kit - whose humourous faces are most entertaining!). It is a delight to witness and proves that fine craftsmanship as a trade, in which the skilled worker has immense pride and takes care, still exists and is going strong with you and others at the helm!

I dunno. The Constitution has been overpainted so many times that the original is hard to recognize. Even Julian would have a hard time replacing the pieces that have been chipped off.
Oh, nothing like a political comment in the middle of the comment section of a completely unrelated video. Always draws a crowd. Let me throw my 2 cents in while we're here: The US Constitution is a living and breathing document. That's how the founders intended it. What you refer to as "overpaint" is merely the natural growth during its lifetime. It is not a static art object but a living avatar of the American psyche. The American people ARE the government. It is not separate from us, it is us. Whereupon hatred of the American government is hatred of the American people. Democracy functions best when the most citizens possible actively engage in its governance. It weakens and devolves into fascism when people give in to fear and irrationality.
One of the things I like best about your restorations is the degree to which you adapt your process for each piece. It's always interesting to watch and learn, and the results are almost uniformly remarkable.
I absolutely love watching restoration of great artwork. My favourite part is the cleaning. I love to watch the brown horrible varnish coming off and the fresh colours shine through, revealing the original painting.
I so do enjoy these videos u do to say that I'm a panting enthusiasts I enjoy how u repair and fix them to a point that I watch when I do my household chores
A stormy day turned out to be bright and sunny. I love watching you retouch and say...why on earth did you think that was the color and 5 dots later, it's exactly the undertone needed to achieve the finished color! I've learned more about the use of color variations and how they create depth watching you retouch than I ever did in years of art classes. So, thank you as always for sharing your immense talents with all of us and tell Kit we love her video bombs!
A very well done restauration indeed of this beautiful painting. The sky is "perfect" in my humble opinion. I love the blue tones in in the top of the sky.
I don’t think you get the level of appreciation you deserve for your amazing abilities… what may seem trivial and average to you requires study and natural ability far beyond most people’s understanding.. you are a master of your craft.. I wish you the very best!!
i really love the analysis at the beginning with the circling of different areas of focus! it helps the untrained eye notice more of what you see as a conservator and it's very helpful!!
I find this all so fascinating!! I've been following Julian's process and progress for quite awhile and have been excited to see such a variety of problem-solving techniques. What I also noticed, after having been a witness for so long is that, despite having no experience in this field, I am beginning to make increasingly accurate educated guesses about which procedures Julian might lean towards. I have to say that his demonstrations and teachings are so expansive that I am starting to feel like I'm participating in this process. Thank you, Julian, for adding to my education!! You're amazing!!
You are a beautiful person, an artist and a creator, who could want more. That makes life so rich, If only the world had more people like you in it. Enjoyed every minute of your narration. God bless Namaste
Oh, the irony... It's your amazing talent that brings these ravaged paintings back to life that keeps sending you all the ravaged paintings! Once again, Julian, you have performed miracles. It looks absolutely gorgeous!
I have just discovered this channel and have been binge-watching. I feel as if I have learned so much. I really appreciate the way Julian keeps his focus on the customer by discussing and validating his approach. This is also evident in other videos, even when I get the feeling that Julian might prefer something different. This is true professionalism. Also, I have begun to appreciate the difference between restoration to the original painting, restoration to the status of the painting after a previous restoration, and doing what is needed to prevent the need for future restoration, while still allowing for that future restoration to occur. I also like the discussions about using modern materials where they make sense. Plus, these videos are just delightful to watch. Even the ones without Kitt in the background.
I've watched probably 90% of the videos on this channel and this is without a doubt one of the most impressive retouchings I've seen Julian do. I also greatly appreciate how much uncut retouching there is in this video, it's my favorite part.
Stunning painting! I love this style that mimics the old Dutch and Italian masterworks because it is so far from my personal art style and takes far more detail than I can manage.
As I was watching you do the re-touching I wondered what your method would look like under the same UV filters...and then you showed the comparison! Perfect. Thanks for sharing your work. It's cathartic to see things renewed!
Your meticulous skills are a joy to watch and enjoy. I have to mention that it's not possible to view other art restoration. I know this isn't what you would want, but your standards are so masterful I just can't. Thank you so much for educating me.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This retouching was amazing! I've been following you for years, and it's been wonderful to witness your understanding of these archival paints get better and better with time!

Not sure if this makes me laugh or cry. And I’m not even American.
Oh, nothing like a political comment in the middle of the comment section of a completely unrelated video. Always draws a crowd.
Let me throw my 2 cents in while we're here:
The US Constitution is a living and breathing document.

Nothing beats checking on UA-cam and seeing there's one from here. Makes my day.

I really love paintings of Venice. I am excited to see this restoration.
So amazing to learn how much work the original painter put into the beautiful painting.
I so do enjoy these videos u do to say that I'm a panting enthusiasts I enjoy how u repair and fix them to a point that I watch when I do my household chores
I love Kitt’s personality so much! Her little eyebrow wiggles are the best!!!
This gave me absolute chills seeing the results and how far the painting has come, wonderful work
A stormy day turned out to be bright and sunny.
It's good to know your working partners are comfortable being silly around you working, really shows a happy and healthy work place
I have to say that his demonstrations and teachings are so
expansive that I am starting to feel like I'm participating in this process. Thank you, Julian, for adding to my education!! You're amazing!!
You are a beautiful person, an artist and a creator, who could want more.
That makes life so rich,
If only the world had more people like you in it.
Enjoyed every minute of your narration.
God bless

Julian: what a wonderful restoration. Another painting magically touch by you. What a difference. Carol from California
The final varnish step, both in these fantastic restorations, and on my own paintings, is by FAR my favorite part.
Kit, what a riot, so glad you left those in.
Stunning work. The painting was stunning right after cleaning..that says so much about the artist.
I love her shenanigans! A girl after my own heart!! What an awesome job, Julian. That was beautiful.
Your meticulous skills are a joy to watch and enjoy. I have to mention that it's not possible to view other art restoration. I know this isn't what you would want, but your standards are so masterful I just can't. Thank you so much for educating me.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
What a beautiful painting. We miss Kitt
Dear Sir, I can only applaud your magnificent work. 👏 Bravo 👏
This retouching was amazing! I've been following you for years, and it's been wonderful to witness your understanding of these archival paints get better and better with time!
Hooray for Dan and his grandma!
