Oh. Oh. My 105 year old grandmother has a painting even darker than this, that is I believe a portrait of an ancestor. I'm 53, and I remember this painting being brighter in my childhood - I would love to be able to get that painting cleaned while she's still here - she still has great eyesight. I doubt I can afford this process now or ever, but maybe someone can, some day....this is so amazing to watch.

I am an MLIS student taking a preservation class, and I had to do a lab on book repairs. As a broke grad student, all I could afford was Elmer's glue. All I could hear while doing the lab was Julian's disappointed voice scolding me for not using archival-grade, reversable glue.

Glue brush vs finger: it actually makes quite a difference. Not many people know this, but a furniture conservator explained to me once that using your finger transfers oils from the skin to the glue and reduces the bonding properties.
Another amazing restoration and fulfilling to watch it take place. All the Halloween words! If someone had come upon that painting and did not know the artist it could have been passed over and never come alive again. Thank you for sharing your skills.
Considering the time and place he was painting, I would not be surprised at all if the model was dead considering the green undertones and red blotchy over the eyes and lips. Could be a cadaver with a bit of rouge applied so they look .... 'living' which was common during that time period, same as propping up the recently deceased where photographed.
