  • My demo of the Yamaha A5R ARE dreadnought cutaway acoustic electric guitar.
In this video, I compare the miced and piezo pickup tones, and also play a 50/50 blend of both. The microphone I use is an AKG Perception 400 - a large diaphragm condenser mic. It's positioned 8 inches in front of the 12 fret, with the capsule pointed at the sound hole.
I do not demo the SRT2 mic modeling preamp in this video - that's for a future video.

Go test a TAYLOR 110E Natural finish not glossy. I audtioned about 20 guitars. In the store I swore this one sounded better than the $2000 Martin. It costs about 1/3rd of the price and sounds amazing. It also does not have their new tone robbing X bracing which is a very good thing. I tried the Yamaha and at 1st I thought they sounded great but the more I played and listened to them they just didn't have the bottom end or the soul I was looking for. This Taylor in my opinion blows them all out of the water. Just go try you'll see and you'll feel the base.

@@UTAH100 I tend to prefer the tone of Martin over Taylor, but I'm not familiar with a lot of them. I'll check out the Taylor 110E sometime.

@@ChrisHollandGuitar Martin makes fine guitars. Tone is subjective and it depends which guitars you are comparing to each other. Given Taylors new V-class bracing (which 110's do not have), many would likely agree with you. V braced guitars lack bass. Now take an older Taylor and older Martin and it will much closer. Easier to repair a Taylor neck by far.

I love this acoustic as well! I'm really happy with the piezo + microphone emulation when using it live. I blend in a little bit of the condenser mic emulation with the piezo, which I set around 9:00. It sounds crystal clear.

Wow... I just ordered this guitar yesterday. Listening to this in just the mic position was amazing...what tone... I have not played the model before buying, but I feel a whole lot better now... very well done Sir... thank you

Cheers! I’m very happy with this guitar. I gigged with it countless times since I made this demo, it’s a high quality instrument. The fretwork is very good - I have the action pretty low (for an acoustic) and there is no fret buzz.

Hello ! I'm wondering how this guitar can sound differently with pickups,Piezo etc when I see that you played unplugged the whole video ? Does the natural acoustic sound can be modified ? Also, i'm wondering if that guitar sound projection is good enough acoustically (when played unplugged) if we compare to a guitar like Yamaha LL16 ? I need a good guitar which project well acoustically as well as plugged in (with that warm tone), which A5R seems to excels. I also like the FGX830C, im so confused since the FG series is cheaper, but with an amazing sound as well and I could upgrade it with bone saddle and nuts and make it a valuable instrument for half the price ;). What would you recommend?
My thought : Mic mode is my favorite, then mic+piezo, then piezo.
good job on the video !

I was plugged in for the entirety of the video. I was recording with the mic and piezo (plugged in) at the same time.
The A5R is the only Yamaha acoustic I have experience with, so I can't comment on the LL16 or FGX830C. I do recommend the A5R though - the tone is fantastic.
As far as sound projection goes, the A5R has average volume for a dreadnought.

Playing and guitar sounding great. Does this sound as good as a D-28 in your opinion? It costs half the price. I was about to buy one. Also, had a good deal on a 714CE but just not feeling the new V bracing- lacks too much base.

    • @ChrisHollandGuitar
      @ChrisHollandGuitar  2 роки тому +2

After watching every quality demo I could find, I definitely think the Martin D-28 sounds better than the Yamaha A5R. The A5R still sounds pretty damn good though, for half the cost of the D-28.
The tone on my A5R was even better before I switched to lighter gauge strings. I used to play 12-53, but switched to 11-52 a while before recording this demo. The tone is a little less deep with 11s, but worth it for ease of full step bends.
As for the craftsmanship - the fretwork on my A5R is great. I sanded down the bridge saddle to lower the action a bit, and there is no buzzing with the action a little over 2mm at the 12 fret on the low E side, and a bit lower on the high E side. I play all over the fretboard and do big bends, and nothing buzzes or frets out.
My A5R wasn't perfect though - the nut height was definitely on the higher side. I had a new delrin nut made, and now it's super comfortable to play.

Get yourself a Yamaha FG5 red label and an A5R for the price of a Martin D28. The FG5 is comparable to a D18. I actually own a D18 and i'm thinking about trading it in and doing just that. I'm also looking at a Takamine P5DC-WB. That one is kind of right in the middle price wise at $1850 or so. The look of that guitar is gorgeous, whiskey brown. I own one Takamine already and i like it so i'd probably like that one as well. The P5DC is more modern sounding you really hear the mids well. The Martin D18, FG5, and A5R you hear more lows and highs with the mids scooped. At least that's what i hear but i think they're all great sounding guitars. Can't beat the Yamaha price though.
