THIS. This is the exact predicament that I am in. I have a Yamaha LL16, bought in 2018, and it's a lovely instrument. However, I find myself longing and yearning for the more premium "made in Japan" models. Right now I'm interested in the Red Label FGX5 or the LL26. Are they worth double the price as the LL16...? Not sure i'll be able to justify the upgrade.

I have an APX-4A, made in Taiwan in the 1990's. I tend to mic it rather than use the electronics. I like the shallow body and the tuners are great.

I'd be interested to hear what you think of the expensive hand made in Japan FG9 if you've a chance to play it. I know this video is all about value, but maybe the FG9, although expensive, might still be good value for the money.

I’ve owned several a3r and a3m. This year I got my A5R, the A3R guitars are on the same level sound and feel wise. I’ve never had any issues with the tuners on the A3 and have never had any issues playability wise. Here in the US, the A3 is around 900 and the A5 around 1700.. get the 3 series!

Hi there, I got my yamaha a3r 2016 model ...yes not the exact same guitar like you demonstrated us(I thought I was buying one like yours...I figured it out once I got it on my hands and compered it with the looks of it from your video 🤣)
Anyway is pretty much the same instrument besides some small changes like the ARE (technically aged wood) Yamaha is using nowadays, probably that is why your guitar's top looks darker than mine which is lighter colour and the grain of the wood is more visible something that I loved as soon as I opened that beautiful hard case that came with from Yamaha ...here I got to say that the guitar is brand new I bought it from a dealer in Italy...
An other difference are the electronics and the battery position...at least these are the differences I can see myself...the rest are exactly as you described, the instrument is very very well made... I couldn't find anything not even inside like leeks of glue around the bracing that you usually see on cheaper guitars ..everything is surprisingly beautifully done.
The guitar feels solid like it is and sounds fantastic with lots of sustain ...something that characterises mostly more much more expensive guitars...the playability is there ...maybe the nut I would say is towards the narrow side but it's OK with me.
I have the guitar a day now and I can't leave it from my hands!!!
Overall... that guitar has everything one needs, beautiful rosewood with excellent finish, warm and balanced sound, comfortable neck, very good electronics (alots of potential) and the most important you don't break the bank...very fair purchase really happy with that Yamaha that guitar is a keeper!!!
Thanks for bringing this up to me Richard...be good 👍 👍

Greetings from the UK, have to agree with you, have owned most high end guitars at some point, but I was gob smacked how good a Yamaha was. I had always avoided the brand based on good, better, best and gear acquisition syndrome etc. Yamaha was never on my list, and then I tried a friends Eastman and a Blueridge both made in China. That changed my mind and on my next purchase I think I played every thing in the shop and purchased a Yamaha FS5, the tone and the factory set up was impeccable. I have since picked a used LSTA, which is great fun. Too much Brand snobbery in the guitar world, people are missing out big time,

I had an LL16, which I played for a couple of years and really enjoyed. That was made in China and I got it 2nd hand from £450. I think the new price is about £800. You just cannot touch these guitars for the money. I have high end US Martins, and the Yammie was certainly in the ballpark, and I would say possibly better than one of them. I only sold it on because I bought a Fylde and my house has a 'one in-one out policy'. They are just fantastic guitars, but the law of diminishing returns applies equally to all guitars. A £200 guitar is probably easily twice as good as a £100 one, a £400 guitar probably isn't anywhere twice as good as the £200, but it's afair bit better. By the time you get into the £1000s, it becomes a matter of taste IMO. I don't like any Lowden I have played, my oldest friend would have to have his surgically removed from his hands. I feel the same about my HD35. They come in at almost the same price.

      @richardclarkmoore  Місяць тому

The one in one out policy is a good one, I try to keep to that as well! But yeah they’re fantastic, and you’re absolutely right, it totally goes down to personal taste after a certain dollar mark

Hey, thanks for this vid :) I have same observation, there is no point in paying double money for 5% extra features, if one really uses the instrument a lot, or gigs with it. 5k axe getting stolen in a skid row joint as you look away to get your drink? No, thanks.
Revstar is a great example, the mid-priced line from Indonesia (at least mine is from Indonesia), does the job.
I feel MiJ & MiA , and some top-line guitars are meant for people expecting high re-sell value (or profit). Maybe for wealthy collectors, too. Its kind of like making museum art objects of the guitars. Which is ok, if you fancy starting a museum ;)
Here in the EU there is a huge market for "original vintage", boxed and never (or hardly ever) played guitars, with criminally high price tags on them. And, a cool name on the headstock, of course.
Its a nonsense, but people seem to like it and play this game.
And, as for double-lines (same model from various factories) all major brands do it, so it has become a thing now. Even Solar do it.
    Cheers.peace

Nice video, beautiful playing. The Yamaha "problem" you describe applies to Alvarez, too. Why would I shell out twice as much for the Japanese version (Yairi) when I can buy their Laureate flagship model from China for $1400 USD? I've been playing acoustics since the 70's, and my first was "made in Japan," which meant it was bottom tier. Fifty years later, Japan is known for fine guitars, and China is the new "made in Japan." However, the truth is some of the finest, most affordable guitars are currently being made in China for non-Chinese companies. Given that the Chinese economy is in free-fall, I'm guessing that this won't last. China's in really bad shape and getting worse.

Hey, I get it. Seeing someone with gauges can spark some curiosity. But it's important to recognize that body modifications, like stretched earlobes, are a form of personal expression. Rather than rushing to judgment, it's crucial to approach these inquiries with an open mind and respect for individual autonomy.
Behind every set of gauges, there's often a meaningful story. It could be tied to culture, spirituality, or simply personal taste. By showing genuine interest and respect, we can foster understanding and appreciation for the diverse ways people express themselves. Let's celebrate that richness in human identity and expression.

You're not right.....I've seen LL16's that are dogs quality wise....I have one that had a hump at the 14th fret and I had to refret it to get the action down....now I did it myself so it only cost me 25.00 USd. But it was a pain in the ass. It does sound like a 7k guitar. It had that all along which is why I bought it. The QUALITY OF THE CHINESE GUITAR DOES NOT COMPARE WITH THE JAPANESE ONES. I've had both.....take a capo when you buy....capo to the 7th fret.....japanese guitars rarely have buzzing which means the fingerboard and frets are very level....the action is avg to low and the sound is huge.

The closest I got is a FS800 I just bought....best neck I've seen in 30 years....not luck....I checked it before I left the store. One small buzz at the 5th fret.....took 5 minutes to level it down a couple thousands. That one I can tune down a whole step and it plays well with no relief in the neck....that's the exception to chinese guitars.
