  • Geelong v Port Adelaide Review Round 9 2024
Geelong go back-to-back with losses for the first time in 2024, coming up short against Port Adelaide at GMHBA since 2007.
Limited pressure was applied early and Port's midfield were on another planet, and made the Cat's pay maximum damage on the scorecard, scooting out to a game high 49 point lead.
Geelong in typical fashion, fought they way back into the match in the 2nd half with grit and determination, but ultimately fell short it what was a disappointing night for the club.
Tom Hawkins equalled the all-time Cats games played with Joel Selwood, playing game 355, but wasn't to be his night in the end.
Geelong play Gold Coast at TIO stadium next Thursday night in what will be an 8 point game.

Our younger guys have really taken over, which is a great sign going forward. Duncan, C Guthrie, STANLEY, Hawkins looking well off the pace. Even Blicavs not having a great year. Rohan the outlier looking as sharp as ever.

I think we took them too easy. We were just not prepared for an avalanche like that and were shell shocked.

What do ypu think about just having Blitz as our full time ruckman, alternating with Conway every other week or so? Neale could also play a role at times alternating between forward and ruck. Gotta get Neale in the team and Stanley out I think.

Hawkins desperately needs a spell. Just hope he can get back to some sort of form before he retires at the end of year. Would be a shame to go out like this. Thankfully,, our forward line is still great without him. Henry, Rohan and Stengle all in ripping goal scoring touch.

Agree with you on Clark. I hope these are just teething problems and that he is not another 1st round bust like so many we have had before him

Our midfield got smashed early. I'm actually getting frustrated with everyone saying "Good effort for coming back and just falling short". Well yeah, that's all good and well, but the fact we were down by 49 points AT HOME on a milestone night for a legend of the club is just not good enough and we have to be better. I know this club is better than that, we all do. Very 2023 Geelong performance with that one. Umpiring decisions or not, they shouldn't have let themselves get into that situation in the first place. Maybe it's a loss we needed to have as a reality check.

I prefer the fight back over the alternative of getting beaten by 80 points at home which is even more embarrassing. But also a heartbreaker when you give yourself a chance to win and don't get it done, when most other sides would've been completely dead and buried. Agreed, we shouldn't have gotten to 49 points down in the first place. I have had concerns of how sustainable it is to continually lose field position. First 7 or so weeks, we turned it over really well, but have struggled in the last few weeks against top 6 sides. Gold Coast will be very difficult, and the Giants almost don't lose it home. A form slump throughout the season was inevitable, hopefully we can get back on track soon
