That was a very fast 11 minutes! Freaking sick!!!
I've owned a 718 GTS (2.5T) & 718 GT4 and 991.2 GTS & currently 992S. I will agree that for some reason, the recent 911's don't have great steering feel/feedback. The 718's for some reason was a step above the 911, especially the GT4, but that might be because I also had Sport Cup 2's.
I think it's mainly down to the transition from hydraulic to electric steering. New Porsches are all electric steering.
But you’ve also not owned a 911 GT car to compare Apple to apples. Both a 911 GTS and 992S are heavier cars than both generations GT3’s and both those cars run on pilot sport 4’s (or similar tires) which is basically an all weather tire and a tire that understeers terribly on track.
Don’t get me wrong the GT4 is a great car. But the real benefit on that car is its balance with the MR configuration. It’s easier to drive reasonably fast out of the box but also not as fun. Whereas a GT3 on good tires is like having the mouse sensitivity turned all the way up. It’s easier to make mistakes but when you nail turn in it’s unbeatable.
Hi KoryjoJK, I have a 991.2 GT3 with Cup 2 and a 992.1 Carrera S with Pilot Super Sport. I cannot confirm having any unhappiness because of the steering in both cars. In my opinion a normal 911 is not comparable to a GT version. As willhurst mentioned I agree that the 992 is the more modern and also heavier car. It depends on what you want, where you live and where you drive. For ME a GT car as a daily driver would be annoying. As a daily a 992 Carrera S is very good car, perhaps a little bit too perfect. You can drive highway with it 500 kilometers without any problems but also you can drive so fast that you will be in jail - even in Germany. ;) If you want to drive sporty I think a GT car from Porsche is the best, even the GT4s. Apart from this a small comparison: A friend has a 991.1 Turbo S with KW suspension, track setup etc. - so "a cheap" GT2. For ME it is not comparible to the 991 GT3. It isn't slow, but it is still boring (you can feel the all-wheel drive, etc.). Also I have driven a "normal" 718 as rental car. Unfortunately not even a GTS or GT4 yet. For me a normal 718 wasn't a bad car, but I found it also boring as a daily and far away from a 992. There are many people who complaining about the steering or that even a 991 GT3 is boring in comparison to a 997 GT3 e.g.
@@frederickschulze8014718 caymans are also all electronic power steering
@@matthiass.2122 Having driven a 991.1 GT3 myself on a long road trip I think anyone describing that car as "boring" is frankly mad! I can totally understand the feel issue with the electronic steering on 991's onwards vs the older hydraulics but it's a fairly minor issue. I currently have a completely stock 987.1S Boxster and while perhaps you can feel or sense front tyre slip and grip a fraction more easily than an electric rack - the precision and direct feeling of steering was way superior in the 991.1GT3 I drove.
Awesome review and car! It's alarming how quickly it goes out of a corner into triple digits so damn fast! I'd love to get a ride in that sometime, Jake!
I drove the 991.2 GT3 and a 992 GT3 back to back recently. I think 992 is more capable in every dimensions. More front-end grip, usable "normal" mode, etc.
Me too. The question is which is the better road car…..?
Anyone you have! But I like the 991 GT3 since it's limits are lower.
I agree. I’ve gone back from a 992 GT3 to a 991.2 GT3. On the track the 992 is immense but 95% of my driving is road based and the 991.2 is a much better road car. Suspension is more compliant and the steering on the 992 GT3 with the double wishbone is far too busy and twitchy on crappy UK roads.
I cannot think of an episode I've watched on this channel that I haven't enjoyed. Cool to see you on more 'supercars'.
Glad to see you growing the channel bro love the comparison videos. When he asked you if you want auto blip and you said no, I knew you were my kinda guy haha
It was interesting to know your opinion about this car, thanks!
Flawless victory fatality
I thought Jake was about to use a condom analogy when comparing steering feel towards the end 😂 great vid!
Same!! Where are our minds at haha
What track is this? it's stunning
Nice dude! Great description of your experience on track and especially the steering/chassis feel compared to earlier gen platforms. As good as EPS systems are for precision and fine tuning, nothing beats a mechanical hydraulic unit for outright feedback.
He and Topher are my fav when it comes to articulating their experiences in an enjoyable and understandable way
I appreciate it! For sure - no EPS I've ever tried provides as much detailed feedback as the best hydraulic racks (997 GT3, Lotus Evora, etc), even if they are more precise.
Nice… looks like Gentian Blue . San Marino Blue ?
hearing the wail of the engine bounce against the wall is something else!
Great video, love the 992 gt3 so much, and I enjoyed your descriptions of the driving experience. Sidenote but can someone please tell me what he said at 4:26 ?
I’m so glad you said the steering is precise but doesn’t have the feedback of the 997… people have waxed on about this double wishbone front suspension but NEVER once did I hear anyone complain about the 997 front end feel…
I guess the double wishbone is the new thing and people must go on about it but I feel the itb setup on the car is the new hot thing but reviewers just blow by the itb thing like it’s nothing
Maybe I'm one of the few who have pointed out the 997's deficiency in front end feel? Not steering feel, but its tendency to push.
Steering feel is drastically different based on tire and front end alignment. A more rigid tire like Cup2 R and the track alignment up front creates much higher load up and less push. But you can't compare any modern EPS steering to older generation cars, they all have isolation. @Zygrene
@savagegeese absolutely. I often notice that tire/alignment attributes are overlooked as contributing factors to steering feel. I've never driven on Cup 2 R. This GT3 was running Supersport R which I hear is sort of a budget Cup 2 competitor. Unsure of differences in sidewall stiffness and other factors.
Regardless, I have never felt an EPS match the best hydraulic racks for feel, e.g. Lotus Evora, Porsche 997 GT3
@@Zygrene The homologated CUP2 R from Porsche for GT3 has the same compound of R comps from GT3 Carerra CUP series and carcass of modern CUP2. Tread blocks are different as well. On the Porsche track alignment there is far more load transfer into suspension laterally that makes its way into steering rack. Its at least 20% better but of course not 997 or any hydro rack including your NSX.
992 Manual Gt3 is my dream car. if only porsche would make it available at msrp.
It's not Porsche that is selling it over MSRP. Not that I can afford it at MSRP anyway.
If you have the funds to afford a GT3 at MSRP, I doubt you would be crying about a markup...
They will make it available at MSRP in 6 years.
Thing is, they can't make enough of these to sell them at MSRP. It's the demand that's driving the price up so much.
@@malcolmn.5222 weird take, paying 100 grand more is quite big of a deal
gt3 at msrp is sorta of good value, but at 300k - hell no
I would have a really hard time driving even 7/10ths in something that expensive, especially not mine.
this was a good video man keep it up
Awesome video. I saw your Spyder video where you said the Spyder RS is the best car you've ever driven. Do you like that even more than this manual 992 GT3?
Almost the same spec as mine, but mine is a CS. Pity you couldn't push, try on Cups next time, much fun to be had!
nice content dude! nice video too, shout out to the owner for giving you a drive. cool dude.
You no lift shift on the manual 992 GT3 so you don't have to lift, just keep you foot on the gas (works part or WOT) and shift. You get a lovely DSG like fart when you change then!
Great video, very informative
My old car! Miss that one, love San Marino Blue!
Great review and interesting point about steering feedback. In your opinion - does a 981 or 718 GT4 provide better steering feel OR is it the same? How about the SS/1LE?
981 vs 718 GT4 both have pretty damn good steering (for EPS). SS 1LE steering is great too. Need to drive them back to back to notice any differences.
very generous for the owner to let you drive his beautiful car.
Stunning color!
Very Nice I had Porsche 992 911 turbo S, I respect this Car Very Much
Hi Zygtrne, love your videos!
How is this steering feel compared to your BRZ?
Who is crazy enough to let you lap their GT3! Lol
Haha straight into trail braking at 9k, GT3 are great, you can hit the limits after 2 seconds of seat time and feel confident.
Can you flat shift with the manual transmission as in upshift without touching the clutch?
Front end pushing causing by no fuels.
What's more fun on track and canyons? That or a properly setup S2000? 🤔
Another s2k vs that idea LOL
@@Zygrene looking forward to the video 😎
@@Zygrene not caring about lap times or speed. I'm curious what has a larger fun factor. Or smiles per gallon.
its gentian blue is it ?. great vid
San Marino blue. PTS
Great Stuff, thanks for the cool video and feedback
totally bonkers car, well done guys.
Was exhaust and everything stock?
Yup
What is that colour?😱❤
Great video
Jake is what’s up 👍
NSX or GT3 / Touring 992 as a keeper? Road and some track use?
I like to close my eyes when i drive so i can imagine im driving a Porsche
So what was the lap times? I'm more interested in that more than anything else. For comparison reasons.
I did 1:23 flat. Jake did 1:20.9 with me sitting passenger. I believe the car can go much faster. Maybe 1:18.
@@Zygrene sorry bud,I must've missed that. I was listening to this video on my way home from work. I believe the faster s2000 out of the ones you drive ran 1:25 at the same track.
Cream of the crop
Love the car!
The long gearing makes the drive seem kinda boring. Barely any shifting action.
Yeah the manual gearing in the GT3 isn't really designed for smaller tracks.
What track is this?
Which mode were you in? Do you have to turn everything off to feel & utilize the backend rotation?
I don't recall the exact mode but we definitely didn't turn traction and stability completely off
@@Zygrene good to know the system is setup to allow some fun while keeping it safe.
With only four gear changes per lap, it may as well be an automatic lol
The manual is better suited to a larger track
what paint is that?
Very nice, I’d spin out
What if ole boy crashes that thing. He going wild in them turns. Driver mod is at an elite level
I guess now we will never know how the auto blipper works
I'm sure it works flawlessly
@@Zygrene needs to be Zygrene tested or I don't buy
it's all downhill from here :(
What a nice car😊
I will take mine with a pdk
And... now he's going to sell the NSX for a P car. 😁
250k+ for one of these, so I'm not so sure. I think he can get his P car kicks out of his 987 when he needs since he's keeping the NSX.
@@TheBucketOfTruth we all know a gt3's cost. P Car can be a 997 or 718. Something similar to the NSX costs.
NSX is here to stay
The s2000 was designed 25+ years ago to a $30k price point. Imagine what an s2000 designed and built today to a $200k price point would do... think about that for a moment.
I owned all Porsches ever made and this one is my 3rd favorite one ❤
Nice car. You can not compare a hydraulic steering with a second generation EPS. Of course, a hydraulic steering is going to have more feedback.
Don't take this as a criticism. I ike your videos. Next time, make a video with a full tank and do several laps before the actual recording to get used to the rear engine platform. It will make your videos more professional.
You can't drive this the same way you are driving a S2000.
Your driving of s2000 is flawless.
The 911 could benefit from some practice.
The 992 is a snoozefest. GT4 RS is the new pinnacle.
If Porsche would only make the 911 a mid-engined car it would dramatically reduce power-off/on oversteer. With my engineering background, the rear engine platform just exictes my OCD:). The GT4 RS all the way.
Except what they say at the 9 minute mark. There are benefits to the rear engine layout. The 911 remains competitive in pro sports car racing against mid- engine rivals.
Why do Americans have to wiggle the gear knob...urgh!!
Feels good. You should give it a try.
give a wiggle mate it’s nice
I was taught to do this because old shit forks would hang and the dogs would still be partially engaged. Wiggling the stick ensured you weren't in a false neutral. Most of those were top loaders and not like a modern manual that has sprung linkage and better syncos.
What track is this and where is it?
Thunderhill West, Willows CA.
