I'm glad we got the Filmation style Marlena. So much more iconic. I really liked the 50s sci-fi style space suit she was given. Reminded me very much of Wally Wood, EC sci-fi comics style.

I really like the Cringer we got. I'm so glad the horsemen didn't sculpt him sitting down. SO many more uses and options for display having him in a standing pose.

Personally, I don't find him to be all that out of scale either. He looks pretty good posed with Prince Adam.

Always loved her backstory. And should they EVER get a live action universe off the ground, I personally think it should start with her. I never did figure out if any other earthlings were on Eternia/Etheria. The half earthlings turned out pretty good 😊
The movie script I wrote was actually centered around her and used Marlena as "the audience" to enter the world of Eternia.

Another great example of your well-earned nickname! The March to 10K continues! I always wanted Prince Adam’s mom! Rainbow Warrior is one my favorite episodes; especially the subtle hint at the end of the episode!

I believe she knew Heman was her son. (Obvious in Filmation but tanned.) I loved that episode where Adam asked her with a concerned but sly look.... "Why did you free me instead of the others?" She was a great character with her own story.
Always wanted an episode where Adam's secret identity was discovered where the sorceress would them erase the person`s (evil or good character) memory at the end. I remember a few episodes where Skeletor video globe would just miss his transformation or talk of Adam being Heman.

I think Cringer as an SDCC pack-in works because that’s what Prince Adam was as well.
That was part of the thought as well. And how recognizable he is by the general public.
Giving us Marlena made the line feel complete with the royal family. So my hat goes off to you there. Only nit-pick is that she looks by far as one of the grumpiest of all female figures.
I just wished Super7 could have done her for the vintage size line

Actually the one and ONLY figure of the MOTUC that I didn’t get. Shortly afterward, her price went into the “Stupid” range on secondary market and I became disinterested.

Have to say the different packaging was a brilliant idea and way to give the Con attendees something special but not upset the fans that couldn't go.

Great video Scott! I was so happy just to get Queen Marlena at the time! Any character that never made the vintage line was a plus to get in Classics! :) And you already know my feeling about Cringer!! I still am sad that the fully articulated Filmation Cringer never made it in 2016! That would have made my year! ha ha
So close to that Cringer. Alas the new team that took over dropped him from the lineup, likely due to the tooling.

Can't say that came up. If we did more versions it would have been armored up. But I suppose in time this could have been done.
Cringer might be a bit small for Classics, but he's the perfect size for the vintage line and unarticulated like Battle Cat. Fixed a hole 25 years later.

I feel like I might have missed something or maybe I'm just already misremembering here at the end of the video, watching this as I'm about to head to bed so quite tired, sorry if this lil bit is covered in there. Who came up with the idea to tie her into Matt Mason and just how did they come up with that? And were they there any proposed ideas to tie MOTU into other toy lines? And I mean actually tie in, not just "these toys are in this universe, MOTU is in this other separate universe, but sometimes they meet each because reasons."

Blackstar was never owned by Mattel, so not likely. A cool idea.
This was a fantastic set. Managed to get two Captain Glenns, but no Queen Marlenas. Someday, I hope to make "soft goods" robes for Queen Marlena, so she can sit. 🤣
Such a shame about not getting around to the fully-articulated Cringer in MOTUC. Loads of potential in that idea. Swap out the head, cast it in purple, add some red armour, and you could've gotten a panther-form Catra out of the mould, too.
The cat form of Catra was enough to make me lament this loss.
What these toy makers needs to understand that their core base is now grown up men and women who are now collecting their favorite toy brand . But they want a more update upscaled rendition of it. Adult toy collectors is a new market that so many major toy companies are late getting on board.
Can you share what that comic was you referenced that showed Evelyn Powers and Biff Beastman etc?

I agree, one of my major nitpicks of the 200x series was that it never expanded on the “universe” part of masters of the universe. It was all about action on Eternia. Marlena was quite bland in the show until they gave her battle Armor and had her fighting the snakemen which was fantastic :)
Yeah, that was a major part of her character!
I dunno if they dropped it entirely, but they certainly didn't get around to mentioning it in the two seasons we got. Maybe it would've been in Season 3, if her character continued to develop.
Was it dropped? Yes, it wasn't mentioned but I feel it's not something you'd bring up in casual conversation and the show was cancelled early. Even in the original cartoon, her Earth origins were not revealed until season 2.
He-Man Classics Queen Marlena is one of the reasons why I wish that Mattel still had the tooling for! This action figure costs way too much after-market. Queen Marlena is one of my favorite characters, because I personally believe that she and Blackstar knew each other...but got split into different universes.

I made Cringer out of some colored modeling clay as a kid, then did a repaint on another tiger toy at a correct scale after that fell apart (a couple of years later).
Now that is necessity is the greatest motivator!
Spector Creative Got me started on toy customizing to change figures I had multiples of into characters I didn’t have/made up.
Queen Marlena was my #1 want in this line, and I was glad that she got checked off my list relatively early! Definitely in my top 10 for the Classics line. I do wish that we could have gotten a re-release of her in the Filmation with the dress as part of the figure, and with the puffy sleeves, to make her more toon accurate. Still very happy with the version we got, though.

It was an early picture book for the brand. I don't recall the name, but if you Google Biff Beastman and do an image search you will find the image I used.
It is a shame that Matt Mason didn't get the green light to go. Having them in scale with Masters, and then the Thundercats (which we also need commentary on by the way) and now Ninja Turtles with Super 7, I am building a fairly nice universe. I even have the Superman, Batman and Mutant from Dark Knight that used the Master's bucks in my Master's box as that seems to be where they fit.
I tried so hard on this one but the design group just wouldn't budge.

I apologize that this is a bit off (but generic and broad) topic, but....
With your frequent mentions of tooling and its cost, any chance of a video addressing the current or (expected) future effects of the rise of 3d printing on the costs and complexities of modern toy production? Even some of the high-end home printers are able to do multiple colors. I could see a high-speed 8-color (3 primaries,, 3 secondaries, black, and white) 3d printer easily replacing all the tooling needed in time, as well as the need to paint the figures since they'd be printed with the proper colors in the plastic.
I did address that a bit here. Let me know if more is needed and I can make a follow up!

@@spectorcreative1872 Interesting from the consumer side, but I'm wondering more about the effects of 3d printing on the industrial side. Heck, I think 3D printing on the consumer side could actually be a threat to the toy industry. After all, kids printing their own toys would basically mean they don't have to buy them.
From the industrial side, however, I think it could be a game changer. Sure, with 75 variants of Batman per line, the basic Batman tooling is worth it. However, for a character like The Mad Hatter, Killer Moth, or Film Freak, it might be more cost effective to just print a few thousand for the few fans that would want them. This might also be of benefit to smaller companies for whom the dies might be a barrier to even going into business in the first place.

One of the real big 'thank you' figures for the line, where I saw and it just went 'thank you, thank you for making this', even if her dress doesn't do up properlyon mine (that could be on me, though)
But i have something more negative to bring up (of course), it was something that seemly got brought up a lot later in the line, especially every time Karg was discussed and something that you never seemed to give a satisfactory answer on (perhaps you couldn't, you were still a Mattel employee after all) and that was how inconsistant you and the team seemed to be when it came to abusing loopholes: for instance you guys were happy to use the style guide as a way to get the Filmation versions of the Princess of Power characters out (which I totally agree with) and frankly you seem to have completely ignored potential rights issues with Marlena here (and would do so later with Gwildor) using any possible technicality to make the Filmation version but other times we'd get quite a moral 'oh no we couldn't possibly do that' answer. So what gives? Was it just a difference in loopholes that we weren't aware of?

This is going to sound like a silly question; I am late to the whole MOTUC line of figures, but as a He-Man fan as both a kid and now as an Adult, Is it possible to get any of the MOTUC figures? Can one still find and purchase Marlena? Or is she sadly sold out? I am a fairly new subscriber to your channel and I enjoy watching your videos on Masters of the Universe and seeing all the figures you helped bring to life for collectors and fans of He-Man. There are several figures I wouldn't mind getting, Marlena being top of my list.
Production ended in 2016 on the classics line so you may need to hit up eBay.

@@markmichel3855 That unused backstory for Evil-Lyn, Beast Man, and Tri-Klops is about the only thing I never really liked from the original series treatment. Everything else had potential, but I never thought that one thing would work very well.

Sorry to be late to the party about this, but I was always wondering this. Randor has brown hair and Marlena has red hair, but Adora (She-Ra) and Adam (He-Man) both had blond hair. What's up with that? Seeing as you were involved with Mattel and had access to archives of the MOTU lore could you shed some light into this. Did Malena dye her hair red (if so, how'd she keep it red all this time [Magic? it is the MOTU after all?] or were the twins from an affair not mentioned in cannon? It's a minor detail but my inquiring mind wants to know. If you have the time I would appreciate any insight you could provide for this. Thank you

By far one of my favorite figures from the line, and probably of all time too.
So many design elements and ideas just came together and worked with her.
Even entirely without context she makes for a solidly imposing queen and warrior.
Maybe one of these days the motu-verse will veer off into unfamiliar territory and give us a marlena comic or series.
I mean... pilot, soldier, and queen. Who wouldn't want to see her story in action.

It was awesome to get a Queen Marlena and I was beyond thrilled to get a Cringer It did not matter to me that this was older cub/preteen Cringer.
Pretending Armorless Battle Cat was Cringer was all We could do back in the day, but I always wished They would make (yet knew They wouldn't) an actual Cringer.
Now I just have to ask this. If You had made Queen Marlena in a white dress, would You have packed her with Pretty Kitty?
