Ce qui me frappe toujours en revoyant cette vidéo que j'adore c'est la gestuelle si juste, inventive, élégante, de Mady ( qui a travaillé le théâtre avec Louis Seigner et cela se sent). Et puis comme elle est une grande musicienne, tout est musique: elle anticipe déjà toujours la phrase qui vient apres dans son corps entier, de cette façon si belle. Une sorte de 6e sens théâtral et musical qu'elle partage avec certaines autres comme Callas, Verrett, l'instinct et la maîtrise.
Mady Mesplé is a very great artist who dedicated all her life to her art, an accomplished musician. In this video it's with an immense courage that she entered on stage, because a few weeks before, her unique daughter had just died from a ruptured aneurysm at 32 years old! The courage and the determination of this woman is incredible. I love him so much!

This is really a most beautiful and valuable document. The Grand Dame Mady Mesplé, already almost 60 years here(born 7th march 1931) and retired 5 years earlier from stage(1985) came back for this occasion to show that she was still in full swing!!! Excellent voice, brilliant breathcontrol, fine acting and still or even more beautiful. Thanks for posting.

@foropera Oui j'ai lu son livre il y a quelques semaines mais je savais tout cela parce que dans les années 80 j'ai étudié le chant à l'école normale de musique à Paris où Mesplé était professeur, et mon professeur la connaissait (il a chanté et enregistré avec elle). C'est mon accompagnatrice qui m'avait informé du décès de sa fille en 1990. J'ai une vive admiration pour la grande artiste et la femme quelle est!

Exquisite performance of Poulenc's most succinct stage work! Many thanks for posting this. It's probably also worth mentioning that Maestro Plasson was a tireless champion of Poulenc's operas, conducting the first Metropolitan Opera "Dialogues of the Carmelites" in 1977.

Je n'ai jamais beaucoup aimé le timbre de Mady Mesplé un timbre mince et léger- normal eu égard à sa tessiture-mais aussi parfois un rien acide. Et cette acidité s'est faite plus évidente avec le temps qui imposait à la chanteuse d'abandonner le registre stratosphérique qui était sa spécialité. Mais...Mais... Mais...au soir de la carrière, il reste la douceur, la puissance, la diction, le vécu dramatique, l'élégance de l'incarnation, en un mot une CLASSE incroyable. Chapeau, madame. Quelle école! Quel exemple!
i feel the same about her voice, which i never liked:to much the typical French high soprano ....and too much "physical intentions in the body" which get out of the center of performing for me........

Mady Mesplé made a relatively unknown recording of Heitor Villa-Lobos' Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5 which is described as "ravishing" by some but I prefer the term "transindental".
