- My husband David has completed building my hurdy-gurdy.
Giving a bit of a demo showing how it sounds.
I am very excited to learn how to play this instrument!
Regarding the Pentacles

The pentacle/pentagram is an old symbol that means many different things to different cultures... It is not just a representation of Satan or evil.. I get tired of people always assuming this symbol is evil.. I wanted my husband to incorporate the pentacle because for me it represents the circle of life, the four elements and the top point is the spirit. Just like the swastika everyone associates it with Hitler and sadly it is actually an ancient and powerful symbol that many cultures used as a protection talisman. It is sad that Hitler ruined it true meaning...
Also Isn’t it funny how only evil people corrupt the meaning of powerful ancient symbols and turn them into something dark when they originally were something good.....

I've watched a few hurdy gurdy vids lately and I must say yours sounds great, better than any I've seen. I also love the Wicca design, beautifully crafted, dark as I would prefer.

This is a gorgeous shape and look for a hurdy gurdy i love the fact that he included a pentagram(yes this one is the pentagram) that resembles the 5 elements and also included the 3 moons symbol which makes it look medieval European
You know when you've heard an en expression before, but you didn't know, or even care' what it meant? Well, that word was hurdy gurdy. And totally by accident, after going down the UA-cam recommendation rabbit hole here I am.
Started off watching a Twilight Zone episode named *Little Boy Lost*, where in the beginning scene, the main characters are at a fun fair and in the background you can hear a really pleasant tune on an organ grinder. Decided I wanted to hear more of this kind of music today, ended up at some street organ grinders and barrel organ demonstrations and all sorts of weird stuff, and then ended up discovering the hurdy gurdy; wow, what a crazy looking, interesting instrument. I love the sound.

That is a splendid example of how to do it, the short view of the 'Buzzing Bridge' bit could have been a tad more detailed, but this is a personal want. I am right on the cusp of making my own 'dog' for a 'symphonie' gurdy I am making, and any example is grasped by me. I have never seen a live Gurdy ever, so the learning curve is difficult...... thanks for some more inspiration....!!!!

That is a gorgious instument. I love how it's a modern recration of a medival insturment with a neopagan asthetic. It works on a couple levels and it sounds excellent. Is there a video of you palying any songs with it?

Very interesting. I saw some other videos, I thought the crank was turning an air pump and being played like an accordion. Didn’t know it had strings.
I think you can summon Satan as a support when you play as a bard with this.
I prefer satin over satan

There is a Spanish folk group from Galicia - Northern Spain - called 'Berroguetto' that uses the Hurdy-Gurdy as one of their regular instruments. Have a look at what they play, it is very interesting. Berroguetto is known, notably, for the soundtrack of the movie " The Way " starring Martin Sheen in 2010 - directed by Emilio Estevez.

An acrylic wheel? That seems more practical. The tone box looks like it'll be tedious, but doable. I might make my summer project making a hurdy gurdy.

I can imagine this instrument developed for pianist that can't play violin, people who have sore neck after playing violin, or simply casual people that want to play violin melody without an effort to learn how to bow and where to touch string for notes.
You are underestimating the skill needed to play this instrument. The Hurdy Gurdy is not only challenging to play but the routine adjustment and maintenance takes a lot more dedication than other instruments.
Also, it's worth mentioning the Hurdy Gurdy was around 500 years before Violins and 650 years before Pianos!
I believe they were also fashioned for blind beggers

I liked the song, "Hurdy Gurdy Man" by Donovan back in the late 60's, but never knew there was such a real instrument. Kind of has a bag pipe drone.
Did you make this Hurdy Gurdy from scratch? If you bought blueprints or nowhere to get a hold of some or maybe even a kit that would be great! I have one already but it doesn't sound nowhere near as fantastic as that one

What's the durability of the acrylic wheel against, I assume... metal strings? Is it easy to replace (looks like it is placed quite sturdy... in this hurdy-gurdy; sorry, I had to :D)?
The acrylic wheel is still going strong.. the cotton on the strings just keeps it buff.

Thank you David used a clear acrylic for the wheel.. It seems to be working very well. He is working on a second hurdy-gurdy with a similar design and using a while acrylic for the wheel... It is his goal to build 13 different hurdygurdys. I suspect he will try using wood for some of the wheels.... Nice, where did he learn to build this? I've found some plans online, but not sure if it's a good project to tackle atm. Any advise?
I used plans from this site sites.google.com/site/mccormackgraeme/antiquatedstrings and modified the plans to my wife's taste. It was fun to build and is fun to play.I am building HG 2 (Agatha) and I am hoping to build many more in the future.
