- Sweet and Sour Chicken
2 1/2 cups chicken, cubed
1 egg, slightly beaten
1/4 cup cornstarch
Oil for frying
2 cans ( 13.5 oz) pineapple chunks, drained (reserve syrup)
1 cup vinegar
1 cup sugar
1 medium green pepper, cut into 1 inch squares
1/2 cup water
4 Tablespoons cornstarch
2 teaspoons soy sauce
1 can (16 oz) small carrots, drained
3 cups hot white rice
Toss chicken and egg until all pieces are coated. Sprinkle 1/4 cup cornstarch over chicken, toss until all pieces are coated. Pour about 1-inch of oil in skillet and cook chicken pieces until cooked through and brown, approximately 4 minutes. Remove chicken to a paper towel lined plate and set aside.
Add water if needed to the reserved pineapple juice to measure 2 cups.
Stir juice, vinegar, and sugar in a wok or large skillet. Heat to boiling; stirring constantly.
Stir in green pepper; heat to boiling. Reduce heat; simmer two minutes.
Blend water and 4 tablespoons corn starch; stir into wok or skillet. Cook, stirring constantly, until mixture thickens and boils.
Boil and stir for one minute more. Stir in pineapple chunks, soy sauce, carrots, and chicken. Heat throughout. Serve over rice.
I got married in 1975, and my grandmother bought me that recipe box. It was yellow and the cards came each month ... it made sure that I visited her monthly :) ... many years ago!
So funny how recipe cards like Hello Fresh are things we think are new and innovative have been around much longer. I look forward to trying this one. I love Asian food. When I was growing up in Georgia, my friend down the street was Chinese and his mother actually taught my mom how to stir-fry and cook Chinese dishes that were so good! My mom in turn taught me. Love how down to earth you guys are in these videos! You guys are a great team!
My mom taught me years ago. I still make it. She never needed a recipe. She just made things. Always perfect
I made this recipe the other night and I’ll have to say,it was the best ever I’ve had. Will be making it a lot. Made enough for at least 4-5 days for my husband and I and bought enough for a couple meals for a family in church. Thank you again for sharing your recipes with all of us.
I totally want to be company at your house! I have made so many of your recipes, and they have been amazing! How did I get to be 64 and never heard of these recipes! Today I made your Raspberry white choc chip cookies. YUMMMMM. I just watched your egg salad recipe and I thought FINALLY! A recipe I make just like you. Right down to the sweet relish and miracle whip 😊 thank you for all these great recipes for a tired old cook!
No kidding! I’m good with visiting and sitting at their table!
Me too 😊
Sooooo agree.. must make sure my chic is well done!!! I married in 1970 and also enrolled in the Betty Crocker recipe card monthly mailing.
Oh my goodness! You may have the same red box that contains this recipe as we do. Actually, it was Tom's mom's box but we inherited it. Thank you so much for watching.
Have never made sweet and sour chic, but will be adding it to our Sunday family dinner soon. Love your channel, cooking with stuff that we on hand or easy to find. Want to hear something even more funny than the recipe box, I have that same red wok, and was bought probably about the same time as Tom's moms. @@comesitatmytable9044
Only the gifted overcome it!! Love it!
I just started watching you and Melissa, I was watching your video and you were concerned about the oil temperature. I learned a trick years ago, you take a wooden skewer and put one end in the center of your oil if it's bubbling its hot. If you don't have wooden skewers use the handle end of a wooden spoon. Keep on cooking I love your show.
Thanks for that tip 😊
How does that work?
Is it the moisture still in the wood that gives off the sizzle?
I enjoy your channel very much. My friend and I recently went to a very popular chain Chinese restaurant. I got the sweet and sour chicken and it was very good. I used your recipe and fixed this for supper tonight. It is delicious! I appreciate how you explain directions. Thank you again, for the delicious recipe and ( it is so much more economical to fix at home) Looking forward to sitting at your table for more wonderful food ideas!
We’re thrilled to hear you tried the recipe. Thank you for the feedback! We really love it when people let us know they’ve tried something we enjoy! Have a great evening and come sit with us again!
I just made Chicken fingers and Mongolian beef with fried beef rice. Learned to cook Chinese during the pandemic through utube. I watched your videos last night and went to bed so hungry 😂 Am no longer allowing myself to watch you at night . Awesome videos Thank you ❤ we always had the green/ red peppers with cherries in our sweet and sour chicken in New England. Am now in West Virginia what a different world and the people are AMAZING ❤
P
My mom used to make a version of that in the 60s but instead of chicken she used chunks of ham. It was delicious. Myself personally, I’ve warmed up a ham steak in the frying pan, cut it into portions put it over rice and then put some combination of the pineapple sauce over top of it. Do you remember that Chinese Chef from the 70s early 80s? Something like Yan Can Wok - anyway, he had a great chicken and pineapple recipe that I’ve made before something like this one that you have. I often times wonder if your videos are cooking videos, or memory videos. Whatever category they fall into I’ve totally fallen in love with you and your wife.
Yan Can Cook. : )

STEPHEN YAN'S
long running tv show
"Wok With Yan",
originated in Canada
and later aired on PBS.
"Wok With Yan" ran from 1970-1995, according to light research.
MARTIN YAN'S
PBS tv show,
"Yan Can Cook",
came later.
While Martin did work for Stephen at one point, the two men are NOT related, (relatives).
Stephen Yan was the highly personable, humorous, entertaining, skilled and talented original chef that people remember fondly watching for so long. Stephen Yan began cooking at 13 years old to help support his family after his father died when Stephen was only 5 years old......so he learned well from a very young age out of the pressure of adversity and responsibility.

Wok with Yan!😊
I grew to love Chinese food while in college. The head chef in our food service trained in France. He was excellent. One of my favorite meals was sweet and sour pork. He didn't put any type of breading on the pork. He used large pieces of onion, along with the peppers and pineapple. I don't remember carrots, though. I was introduced to sweet and sour chicken after college. Around where I live they uses plum sauce instead of the regular sweet and sour sauce. Both are excellent.
Dear Tom and Melissa, I’m officially almost through all your videos. 😄 I perceive that you are especially fond of pineapple. I like pineapple okay but it’s far from my fav fruit, so I saved all the pineapple recipes you did til last. Watching this one reminded me of a recipe I have that I think you would love. It’s for an incredibly easy pineapple upside down cake. I love it, and cake is far from my fav dessert (I’m a fruit pie person). Ok. You take one stick of butter and put it in a 9 x 13 cake pan and put it in your oven while it preheats. When it’s melted, stir into the butter one cup of brown sugar. Take a can of pineapple slices and save the juice. There should be one cup of juice, and every time I’ve made it there has been. Arrange the slices onto the brown sugar in one tier, i.e. not heaped on top of each other. Then you take a plain yellow or white cake mix and prepare it according to pkg directions EXCEPT you replace the cup of water with the cup of pineapple juice. Pour it over the pineapple slices and bake it, again, according to pkg directions. That’s it! It is the best, the moistest cake you’ll ever want to eat. I hope you try it and I hope you like it.
Never tell a cook out of Cook especially one with a gut that size most people call it a bread basket or a beer belly is this a bacon fat belly❤
That is delicious LOOKING. Love Chinese food. Looking forward to making this. ❤️❤️❤️
I love pineapple! Especially served in a warm dish like sweet and sour pork or chicken! And pineapple upside down cake. I'm going to try your recipe. I love simple!
If I don't heat the butter & brown sugar in a saucepan first, then pour it into the cake pan, I sometimes have very bad results.
Looked this up and checked what I have done compared to you. Looks like we do it about the same way. Thank you!
Thank you so much for teaching us how-to make Chinese Sweet & Sour Chicken!!
Tom You Are Making me Hungry for some of this Sweet /Sour Chicken and I know. My Youngest Daughter
Sherry will also Love This! Thank You and Melissa for Welcoming All of Us Into Your Home! God Bless you❤I Too had those Recipe File and Cards and used and used them for years! Now since it is just me at Home I will have to fix this for the Family😊
I had that Betty Crocker recipe card box with recipes in a yellow box. My mom started it for me and I finished it. Lost it in the flood of 2012. It was a great source of recipes and had a great apple pie recipe.
Tom, great recipe! Thank 8:31 You. I remember the Betty Crocker recipe box! Ours was yellow plastic and stuffed full of (mostly) great recipes. It was great fun to sort through them and add the new ones. Wish I still had them. I DO have a Betty Crocker recipe book from the 50s which has been revised several times, to reflect changing tastes and different ideas on “healthy” things. Lots of good stuff there too. Best to you and Melissa and again, thank you.
Mine was avacado green
good
Just love all your videos
I worked a Wings Teahouse as hostess I loved Mr and Mrs Lee
They were like family
Also I am proud to see someone from Kentucky on Utube
God bless you both
Keep it coming
I live in Winchester
I made this and it is delicious! It is just my husband and me, so it made a lot, but we had leftovers the next day and it was just as good. So, cook once, eat twice!

Looks so delicious!!!😊
MY SON LOVES SWEET & SOUR CHICKEN CHINESE FOOD.
I used to go to Wings at least 2 times a month when i was a young woman just married. Love them so much.Happy memories
My mom had a similar recipe everything except it called for 1/4 cup ketchup an after it was added thrn the slurry went it. It looked milky red and magically within a couple minurs it turned into a translucent red you typically see with sweet n sour items. Thrn she’d add the green pepper, pineapples and finally the chicken pieces. Thank you for bringing back Wings Tea house!!!
Lol !!! This lefty loves it. Can’t wait to try this one.
Thank you so much for watching. We really do appreciate it.
I’m a lefty also. My Daddy was a left also. He told me that means greatness runs in the family.
That looks delicious. I love sweet and sour chicken,
I make that by pretty much the same recipe, but I made up the recipe myself because I didn't have one (internet didn't exist then). I don't bread my chicken, I just cut it up into bite size pieces and saute them in butter until done. I don't have a wok, but I still have (and use) my hamilton beach electric skillett that I received as a wedding gift in 1972.
I find when you dredge the chicken like that it really helps thicken the sauce nicely. Yum.😊
I just made this today for the first time and just loved it! Really simple to make and prefer it to the kind with the heavy breading. I did everything the same but also added some sugar snap peas because I love them! What a treat! Thank you for sharing, this will be a keeper for sure!💙
amazing
I'm new to your channel but boy am I glad I found you!
The sweet & sour chicken looks amazing.
Are you a preacher man?
If so, I'd love to listen to your sermons as well as your awesome videos.
You are definitely a blessing to all who watch.
✝️
Thank you so much for the kind words. His dad was a preacher and Toms got it in him, but he is a retired schoolteacher. And that can be a lot the same!
Those older appliances were built to last! I have a 70's fondue pot that works fine.😊
Tom, I am very impressed you still have the recipe box intact. My mom ordered them for me for my ‘hope chest’ and I wish I had them today. 😊
The yellow peppers have the best taste, but the three colors are nice I add an onion, and a few wedged Roma tomatoes.
Tom's mom took excellent care of her box. Tom treasures it now that she is gone. Thank you so much for watching our video. Hope you've had a great afternoon.
@@comesitatmytable9044 .. Over the decades, I've had several relatives pass-on who left me either possessions, memories, or both, which I also treasure very much.
I guess more sensitive folks like us are in some sort of 'survivors club'?
Looks delicious
This is a must to try looks so easy
I too had the Betty Crocker Recipe Card box and was so happy to see that I have an exact wok like you have that was your mother’s. Brings back the excitement of the monthly card delivery. Loved the Porcupine Meatball recipe in there as well as the Autumn Soup and the Waikiki Meatball recipe too! Thanks for the reminders.
This is another awesome recipe. The breading is great for anything fried.
Holy moly! Sweet and sour chicken? I GOTTA try this recipe .. its one of my favourite Chinese dishes
Such a feel-good channel. I feel like I’m in your kitchen waiting for my piece of pie 🥧 😋 😁
Looks delish! Can’t wait to try it!
Thanks for sharing I am going to make that myself thank you
Oh my, Tom. I had that electric wok AND that recipe library! Thanks for the memory ❤️
I had the same recipe box back in the 70’s. Wish I still had it. I’ve made this for my family back in the day.
We are lucky to have Tom's mom's box. There are some delicious recipes in that little treasure chest!
Thank you for sharing, I love this dish.❤
Great recipes thank you so much
I have just discovered you two, and I just love you! I actually have those recipe cards.
You didn't need a wok for that really just a big pot. Woks are for stir frying. I'm sure it was delicious though.
Karen use wot pan floats yer boat don't see you din videos for folks geeese ! What about thanks for teaching us how to make this dish? 😊
Thank you tom n Melissa
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤@@janetjewell7242
i like your shirt i always heard left handed people have an advantage over right handed people
I absolutely love sweet and sour chicken and this recipe looks very easy to make. Thank you for sharing.. I love to watch you cook and the stories you tell. God Bless you both..
Thank you, Lois. We hope you enjoy this recipe like we do. We appreciate you watching.
I believe I will add a jar of 🍒 with juice. At our Chinese restaurant, the sweet and sour is red.
red food coloring, sugar, water = red sweet and sour sauce. (Use sweet Thai chili sauce though, it's better, the other stuff for the kids, lol)
I've done sweet and sour pork same way with boneless thick chops. Great recipe.
I can tell Tom loves to cook , but getting out of cooking to run the camera is just genius ! 😅😅😅
Plus when he takes the frist bit the smile on his face we all are ready come sit at your table and enjoy !
He definitely has the talent in the kitchen in our family. Plus, I'd be all thumbs on the other side of the camera! 😊
I have made my Sweet & Sour much the same was since I first had it in 1956 in San Francisco. They always included large chunks of onion in their sauce. Works with pork as well as chicken. They also made a version with fried Won Ton noodles as a bargain meal.
If you leave the chicken in the egg for 30 minutes before putting it in the cornflour, it'll guarantee tenderness.
Works with any meat.
Cornflour does the same thing, it's called velveting.
To test the hotness of your oil, sprinkle a teeny tiny bit of flour in it. It will quickly sizzle if it’s hot and ready for frying
One utuber uses wooden spoon handle and see if it sizzles. It works. Both ways are great
I could taste that through the video. What a dish for a king . This is next on my list for sure. Thankyou both for sharing your time with all of us! God's love John
Thank you, John. We appreciate the nice comment.
A little late “to” your table. Your recipes are so good! I loved the t-shirt in this video, as I’m a lefty. Is it missing punctuation? Lol.
I wish I could share our version for you to make(Better Homes & Gardens)
💁🏻♀️One of our favorite leftovers too!!!😁
☝🏻TIP(work smarter/use the right tool for the job) ...Combine your cornstarch and eggs with a tiny bit of water for your ideal consistency then add ALL your chicken pieces (MELISSA...Use a fork for this step😊) drop them individually into the oil and you'll get those extra hanging on'ers giving that little bit of restaurant influence😉👍🏻
I’m going to make this but with broccoli added also. Looks delicious. Thank you. 😊what part of w. Va. Did you live? My folks were from Spencer.
Same here. I live in north central PA and never had real Chinese food as a child. This area is as rural as it comes. I bought "LaChoy" Chinese food from the grocery store when I got out on my own. I never ate chinese food from a restaurant until I was in my 30's.
Love sweet and sour chicken! And pork. And beef. Here in the Ozark hills of Missouri we also have what has become known as Springfield-style cashew chicken; my recipe, from the house of one of the originators, has a peanut butter batter! Very creative cooks, those with Asian backgrounds! I can't wait to try this!!
We're near Springfield also...will you tell the recipe please..cashew chicken
@lovesJesus448
I will! As soon as I dig out the recipe. It is so good! And has an ingredient you would never guess in it!
I love Chinese food, I must try this.
Thank you Tom and camera lady Melisa, just discovered your channel today and have watched several of your videos and can't wait to try them!
Awesome! Thank you! We are so excited that our channel is growing. We appreciate kind people like yourself for watching.
That looks delicious. I will have to try it caught myself blowing on it because it was hot. Made my mouth water.
That poor wok is like me wearing a bathing suit...things want to spill out all over the place!😂 Seriously though, the sweet and sour chicken looks delicious!
Looks great and so easy! Thanks you two, and congrats on 100K!😊
I love your shirt.
I'm allergic to sweet n sour so shared with my friend Kristi❤❤
That looks really delicious!!
I keep ending up punching the thumbs up to all your recipies lololol. I am on ssi so i have to wait to get alot of the engretients at once. So i get a few at a time. But it works !!!! Thank you so much for all your doing to show us everything. I am 76 yrs and do need to watch my salt 😢 but its ok. I am making your meat loaf for our game night dinner next monday night. There are only 4/5 there with us so this will work. Not much left for sandwiches but OH WELL lolol god bless you both.
I swear I can smell this!!!! That's what's for dinner tomorrow
I loved the Betty Crocker Box. My son could eat sweet and sour chicken everyday
This one is a classic we think! And that BC box has some real treasures of recipes inside.
Int looks really delicious. I am going to try the recipe. Thank you.
Like your Colorado tee. To grease my pans I use a sandwich bag. Can’t wait to try it
Looks so Delicious!
I love the wind chimes in the background. Must be windy there.
I love watching a southerner make Chinese food. It looks delicious. Can’t wait to make it - small serving though!
Tom, you seem to really enjoy cooking. Just curious, did you grow up cooking WITH your mom? I've been cooking with my grandson since he was about 5, and he's now 17. We always enjoyed our time together in the kitchen. We still sometimes cook together, but now he has the confidence to see a recipe he wants to try and does it on his own. I'm so proud of him! I teased him one day by telling him that if he knew how to cook, he'd ALWAYS have a girlfriend. 😊 I'm so glad I found Come Sit at My Table. I enjoy seeing the recipes you make... keep 'em coming. (I've been sharing some of them with my grandson!) Thanks so much!
Great 👍 recipe. Love 💕 and Hugs. ❤❤❤
Thank you so much 😊 Your comment is so sweet. We appreciate such a kind response!
Hi Tom & Melissa, I cannot wait to make this wonderful dish. Love the back story of Wing Tea House. So sweetI We just subscribed & will share your videos!
Thank you!
Joan & Dennis 😊😊
Looks delicious 😊
Looks Amazing 😊
ACK!! I have that set of recipe cards!! I still remember getting each new section in the mail...I was 13 or 14.
Love it!
one of our uncles used to say.....there is the right hand and the wrong hand...but I love your shirt...I too am left handed, and it passed down from my grandmother to mother and then to me...I was the only lefty in the family.
Just a couple of suggestions: For the amount of chicken you used 3 batches allows for the oil to stay close to the same temperature during the fry so the time the chicken needs to be in and not absorbing as much oil,,,, also if the temp is measured to 325 and the chicken fried to about 80% then remove and bring temp to 370 and fry to golden brown. This method does produce chicken that is crispy on the outside and juicy inside. Also adding about 1/2t of baking SODA will increase the crispiness. Thanks for your work and through instructions.
You are welcome. We do appreciate that you are watching, and we love getting tips from our viewers. They are the BEST cooks.
I've had this before but I want to try this recipe.
I remember that Betty Box 😂 Keep in mind if you need a ingredient and you have time Amazon has absolutely everything. I got all my Chinese spices through there and it can be cheaper or at store cost .
Can't wait to try this❤
Thanks for the recipe.. I enjoy your videos and have learned a lot.. Y’all stay safe and don’t forget to “Put A Lid On It “……
O my goodness, your walk took me back in time. When i was very young i was raising my two older children. We lived in a very small apartment and i was very poor. I only had enough money for electricity. No gas. So i cooked all of our meals out of that same exact walk. Same color and all. Thank you for that blast from the past.😊
I made this it is absolutely delicious.👍
Glad you liked it! We think it's great. We really appreciate that you are watching our channel.
My mother used to get those cards in the 70s too. I'll never forget "Chicken Waikiki Beach." Do you have that one in your card box? It's a good one!
Looks delicious, I am going to make this today, but I live alone, so I'm going to scale it back some and will freeze whats left. This would make a fantastic freezer meal. In single serving freezer to microwave or oven pans..
I just saw this video tonight in August, and I was anxious every time you drew that spoon through the pan. I kept waiting it for it overflow. But it didn't. This is definitely a recipe I'm stealing from you. I know you won't mind😊.
I’m going to make this. It looks delicious and easy to do.
As a side. Your CUTCO Knives are the best you will ever use. The sharpest you can buy.
Sounds scrumptious…. I think I will try crushed pineapple and snow peas instead of peppers even though I like peppers
I had one o those recipe boxes. I gave my to my oldest daughter wne she moved out
I love sweet and sour chicken. Thank you for this easy-to-do recipe. Looks absolutely delicious!
You’re so welcome. It’s a delicious meal! We hope you enjoy it.
😊
