Wiesel Tank - German mini battle tank that has been proven in Afghanistan and Somalia

- The Wiesel is a German light air-transportable armoured fighting vehicle, more specifically a lightly armoured weapons carrier. The vehicle was named Wiesel ("weasel") because of its small size and agility, which make it very difficult to detect on the battlefield.
tank wiesal awalnya was developed for the German Army to meet a requirement for an air-transportable light armored vehicle for use by its airborne troops, as the infantry of the German Bundeswehr, especially airborne infantry, were considered unprepared to successfully fight enemy main battle tanks (MBT) in the 1970s. The Wiesel was finally introduced as new weapon system for the Bundeswehr with deliveries beginning in the late 1980s.
I live in a golf cart community in Florida. My friends keep telling me to buy one. As a former Marine, this would be perfect.
You also could chose for a Kettenkrad (half tank, half motorcycle). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sd.Kfz._2
As a US Marine , what is your serious opinion on the vehicle ? Since germany pretty much is its only operator and no one else seems to have anything like it , does it mean they doing it wrong ?
With a golf ball gun? 😭😭 lol
5Ring,
" ONCE a Marine,
ALWAYS a Marine ! "
They’re not going to like what those tracks are going to do to the fairways! 🙈
What a fantastic little weapons system.
And it looks like a nice toy, too ! I'd love to have one in my garage and every evening take a quick tour around town just to make sure everything is OK !
if you are in usa, you could potentially if there is any of those, too bad germany baned all selling ability for civilians@@rainbowseeker5930
It adds a great amount of firepower in such a small vehicle that is also very mobile even on bad terrain and it won't have cost a fortune.
and hard to find when its somewhere in a treeline or something its a great hit and run ambush vehicle
That does it.. I want, I need it and I will be the future owner of one..
It's just about the cutest thing ever made.
Inform yourself about east german Kinderpanzer.
yup, like the ferret armoured car, or the old bren gun carrier
I see your weasal and will point you at the Ww2 luchs. THAT is the cutest tank ever
Cute, until you stand on the receiving side
lol you never will
Looks like something out of a GI JOE catalogue. Never knew something this small existed.
least not since ww1
If the Germans made it be sure it works for its intended purpose.
"...Never knew something this small existed...."
-That what she said. ☹
@@csabagall8811I'm the 7th.
The original Wiesel is retiring and the Wiesel 2 is taking it's place. One roadwheel more and 110 hp, doesn't sound like much but it means more speed and room.
I can see how these could be very effective, in certain instances. say you have 4 of them.. 2 with the 20mm cannons.. 1 mortar rig, and one set up with atgms... that would be a force to be reckoned with, especially if it was inserted in a strategic manner, with speed and surprise on its side.
as these never operate alone (read: more than one wiesel. Infantry also operates along with them), that would be a realistic setup. There is also a MILAN/MELLS-version of it. So if you think you made out a single wiesel with a gun, and you´re in a proper tank, you´re maybe already targeted by a MILAN-carrying Wiesel.
Ive once heard a story of a soldier who told that during a practice with the french military 2 Wiesels with TOW were able to keep an entire unit of a dozen french MBTs at distance by constantly having one reload in cover behind a house while the other fired ATGMs at the MBTs. No clue how reliable that source is and if it may have been exageratted in numbers, but those Wiesels definitely have some worth if deployed well
@@sharkquark6252 they are so small and quick it would be hard to fire back at them if they shoot and scoot.
You can Buy 18 of them for One Modern Leopard 2 Tank. No Chance the Leopard wins.
agreed it would be perfect in that role of paratrooper fire support
„Let's take cover in the Forest. There we can regroup and are safe for now.“
„Sir, what's that weird vehicle coming our way out of the undergrowth?“
„F**k!! It‘s a Wies…“ 💥💥💥💥
Never underestimate these weasel, in trainings tankers and mechanised inf always got taken out by these
Yeah, I've been at one of those exercises where our sister company with the Wiesels took apart US 1st Armored Division units. Even after the first ambush, when they found out that no forest is safe, they still got slapped again and again.
The Wiesel platform would make a great starting point for a fully autonomous ground battle drone.
That'd be the Ripsaw.
I can imagine them being mass produced with Remote controlled tech inside and probably spaced armor would be very great to Blitz most enemy’s
Germany is already testing a system like this
With Arnold Schwarzenegger
Der Wiesel ist für die Fallschirmjäger gebaut worden 💪🏼🇩🇪
They should convert this to a battlefield drone.
Great way to deploy support with maneuverability together with paratroopers, giving them great punch with the TOW for anti armor.
@@larslore nicht nur feuerkraft.
Auch Aufklärung und Überwachung
Seeing this tinny tank in action is scary, this little fella is a formidable force to reckon with and ideal for assisting any infantry. I'd like to see the Wiesel in a urban environment not only in the countryside. As a fmr. grunt I'd like to have the extra firepower 20mm or TOW missile or with the stinger variant. I wish the Bundeswehr would sent some of those to Ukraine too. .....
I think ukraine now has Wiesel's.
They were used during the german rescue operation in Sudan recently, securing the airfield.
interviewer: where do you see yourself in 5 years?
me: owning one of these
best answer in an interview
looks like a modern Bren gun carrier with a turret
The last time I saw one of these in operation was in 2006 in Baumholder, Germany where I was stationed as an Infantry Senior NCO. My family and I were driving along the highway to Friesen, Germany on our way to K town when a Weasel pulled onto the road in what appeared to be a turret less weasel driven by a civilian who I’m guessing were maintenance crews working on the nearby bird choppers….I mean wind turbines. I was doing 60 MPH and it pulled out and took of in front of me like it had a turbo on that little Opel engine! It easily got up to 55 MPH (approximately) and after a mile or so it pulled off to the next turbine. I still remember the grin on the drivers face and the other guy in the turret ring laughing. To own one of these beasts would be sweet. The good thing about small, powerful vehicles like this is that they can navigate through terrain people would never expect a military to consider as a route. It’s low profile makes it simple to camouflage with local vegetation so it looks like a rolling bush. If they’re ever concerned about being spotted, they simple pull off the road and drive into a clump of bushes so only the turret is exposed above the bush.
Use metric...you made a revolution not to be British and you keep using imperial
@@TheMrcassina lol. I’m guessing you’ve never lived in the US as an adult so I’ll understand the gap in your knowledge. I served in the Army from 1983-2009 and we use the metric system on everything we do. The only Imperial system use is from anything mechanical. When I fire my weapons or call for artillery strikes, it’s all in metric. For engineering, the metric system is far better. The sad part of living in any European country is how expensive everything there is, I pay $2.55 for 3.6 liters of gasoline/petrol while europe puts so much tax on their gas it comes out to around $9 USD per 3.6 liters! And the Europeans pay the same price for their oil as we do, European petrol is not special.
@@echohunter4199 I assume he's talking about the 55 MPH you're talking about.
bird chopper? you know this is bullshit, right?
@@denjajujajo really?!! Lol. I had fun watching out my kitchen window as a couple of those things self destructed during a wind storm AND many were shut down because they were killing birds and the locals petitioned the government to stop the turbines. When one of them self destructed near Baumholder it was during a bad wind storm and a blade broke off, went flying high into the air and came down and stuck into the ground like a knife while another blade went sailing a couple hundred meters away. So bullshit? I go with what I’ve seen and KNOW.
when is the first ukrainewood movie coming out. vin diesel in a wiesel
hahahha
I'd buy pre-sale tix
Makes good sense these days with all the many very effective tank killer weapons. Many of these could be made for the price of one M1a1 battle tank.
Sherman tanks which were smaller than the German behemoths (WWII) overwhelmed them with numbers, training and tactics
I believe during ww2 artillery and air was the main killer of tanks tanks were mostly used for infantry support
@@MrTangolizard That’s typically true to any war.
Artillery kills the lion share of all soldiers and armor in wars.
The Sherman tank was actually pretty massive in comparison to most German tanks.
A lot of the popular beliefs about the Sherman tank in the modern psyche aren’t really accurate to the reality of the wartime experience.
@@ROFLobster4884 yes and I can only see that getting worse for tanks with artillery getting more and more accurate and with Russia showing that blanketing a area just puts huge logistical stress on your military it’s better to use accurate lower numbers
@@ROFLobster4884I was shocked when I saw an E8 in person. That thing has to be 8-10 feet tall. The t34 was a couple feet shorter. Didn’t have any German armor to compare it to though, unfortunate.
I bought two of these. Now I own armed Rolerskates 👍🏻
Found next to the Barbie Corvette in the toy section.
Ukraine would benefit TREMENDOUSLY if they got their hands on these especially the mk2 this thing would be crucial
Gamechanger, right ?
Not Lancet proof though are they?
@@randymarsh1471 Yeah, another one. A great specimen for some Russian military museum in Moscow.
Ukraine Nonsens they are Losing.
I think it's a very good vehicle to support an infantry group, it's light, aero transportable, it can sneak in to follow the group. Super Machine
In forest environments they did very well against main battle tanks in trainings. You can hide them literally behind a bush, also just out maneuver the tank with the very fast Wiesels.
One of their main features is how stealthy they are, not only because of their small size and low silhouette but also because they are extremely silent.
Funfact, you can drive those weasels with a standard 3.5t driverlicens in Germany as a civilian. given it's demilitarized and therefore come under said 3.5
I want to pick up my girlfriend for prom night in this ! Cool

After watching what's going on in Ukraine, these seem like they would be great if used in combination with drones. It would provide good cover from small arms fire, and mobility while the drones take out the heavier tanks, or troop positions miles away. One guy is driving it while the other controls the drones. Small, mobile, and constantly on the move.
Theay would be. Greetings from germany
just a dream but i want one
Me too haha
why not build one?
Don't we all?
i hated fighting these things in arma, cause they had that 30/25mm and were hard to hit with unguided munitions cause of their size and speed. they have steel armor too instead of aluminum so its not anything to shrug at.
It's a 20mm. The same as on the Marder IFV.
Why this type of vehicle is not in most militaries around the world is amazing. It really requires no explanation why not to have them.
2:18 That gun is a TOW missile launcher. A Wiesel with a TOW missile is an insane combo. Oh my God. With a trained operator, that'd kick ass in Ukraine. That's genius.
Ukrainian terrain, Imo, would be perfect for a Wiesel. They'd have the ability to quickly pop up, take a shot, and hide again-- 'fire and forget' doctrine. They're fast/armored enough to punch through Russian infantry to get a better shot at targets of interest, and they're small enough to avoid mud problems and can maneuver on roadways with ease. I'd have to think that a Wiesel with a TOW would kill a a T-72 almost every time at a longer range. Using Soviet armor tactics against them lol.
They should make an AI powered model that can act like a force multiplier, where a single manned Wiesel can control multiple autonomous Wiesels.
They've got Spike AT missiles these days.
This tank is like the Wasp tank hull with Smoky Turret in the Tanki MMO game, so cute but useful.
Interesting to see that the suspension very much resembles 1930's tankettes. They weren't so daft back then, were they.
If done properly...the little Polish tankette with the 20mm i always thought was very good...for 1939/40...not after !
i never would have thought they were daft. if anything people have gotten dumber over time.
Its a very light vehicle and incredibly simple. Its supposed to be easy to maintain, and having a hydraulic suspension in the settings this is meant for would be suicide.
It looks so cute lol. Hopefully it doesn't get shot at.
@@richardbradley2335 it's a universal carrier/ bren carrier...the werhmact utilised them & recognized them as effective vehicles as did the brits.
They did a full circle with this one.
I want one just to drive around.
Use that as an unmanned vehicle would be scary to see. A squad of these 😮
I believe the US military is testing the Wiesel 2 chassis for land drone prototypes right now.
But with our guys in it they pull things off like its a toy. They can just drive that thing like a maniac
the only thing smaller than a wiesel tank is the inside of a wiesel tank
Going to work with this cute little tank, traffic will be no problem.
It can be deadly. "But, but it is so cute!" :)
I want one of these for Christmas.
They made a new weisel rank called " LUWA "... 👍
Interesting. Check out the vickers Mk IV light tank or the panzer Mk1, both from early WW2
Normally I can't stand this type of robo narration, but this was a good video. Good job !
Perfect to turn into a drone and have a flying drone to spot for and cover it
As it happens they actually testing doing just that !
Switchblades! Give it switchblades!
Driv-thru at McDonalds is no problem
1 with 20 mm and thermal would do anti air
1 with anti tank
Infantry squad
That sounds lethal. They should make little armoured trailers then you could drag a little 3 man squad behind you at 25 mph
I have a lego version of this tank
They’re not “tanks”. They are classified as armored weapons carriers or AWCs….

Man if this was for sale w/out the gun I'd buy one. I'd love to freak out my neighbors.
These could be produce in quantities that could swarm a position. I would think the size and speed of these would be helpful to the infantry in that more firepower could be added. But, I need to mention I am not an infantryman so there are things I am missing that may prevent these from being used.
Hard to spot? For drones?
Awwwwwwww it’s kinda cute, gonna be hilarious seeing these sent to fight T90.
The Ukrainians did fight t72 to T90's with quads armed with Stuna-P...and they are very effective...
Hide, shoot, scoot
I’ve enjoyed watching Russia struggle against a fifth rate military power after years of Russiaboos calling them the best or 2nd best military in the world.
The weasel was produced for German paratroopers.... 😉 To be deployed together with them! Imagine paratroopers with tanks jumping out of planes! 😉
Hmmm. Soviets did. On maneuvers, but still - they did. BMD-1/2 (73mm/30mm cannon) and Nona-S (120mm low-pressure universal cannon/launcher/mortar) can be airdropped on special platforms with rocket brakes, without crew/ammo. So could BTRs and BMPs, but they hasnt special suspension adjusters so likely lose part of wheels... or break something else. Despite danger, they were dropped from planes few times during maneuvers back in USSR.
The US did it, too! They dropped Sheridan tanks from C-130's with the LARPS system. Which from the videos I've seen looked pretty terrifying. I don't think they ever did that in combat, but I do believe they flew in Sheridans in C-130's after taking the airport during the invasion of Panama in the 80's. C-130's can land at just about any airport, including grass strips, unlike anything that could carry an MBT.
Actually these don't get dropped with a parachute. But they are so small that 2 of them fit into a medium sized helicopter. Dropping them with a parachute has been tried but after multiple have been destroyed it was concluded that carrying them with a helicopter is more practical.
I am no military expert or anything but if some tank would be called cute this is the one lol. And it makes it even more badass as it seems efficient in its own right.
Always been a bit of a tank buff, but I did not know about this one. This really looks like a WW2 type of light tank like the Stewart, but 2 minutes into the video I'm still not understanding where this vehicle fits in to a modern battlefield in the 80s or since. Ok I can see it being effective especially with the TOW launcher. I like it, and version 2 as well.
a small developing nation would love these things. Be a lot cheaper than full size battle tanks
But not so useful. If tank not protected from RPGs and cant destroy a house with one shot - take a toyota and mount some firepower on it.
@@Uncle_Smallett that would be the same case for the toyota though as well. Im assuming the tank will stop small arms fire as well where a toyota will only take so much and bad luck could lead to driver getting shot very quickly. Theyd be safe in the tank as long as infantry doesnt let them get killed by anti tank. I could see this being really useful for fighting organized crime like cartels and such as well. Imagaine doing a raid with one of these babies lmao
@@65stang98 well, if you about police purpose - yes, weasel better than 4x4. Im about war. Now it looks BTR/BMP not much better than toyota. Every team has few RPGs, so, if vehicle not protected from it - not so much difference. 4x4 cheaper and more comfortable to leave quickly. And RPG dont cook guys inside 4x4 like in BTR, just shrapnel or HEAT pest, if unlucky.
Brilliant
But what is the tactical use on the battlefield? I dont get that?
People make fun of the wiesel, but I'd rather have one than not have one. It strikes me as a vehicle that would fast become indispensable when things get really bad.
It’s like an ATV on steroids
I can see a case where every small boy who logs on UA-cam to look at this and automatically concludes, "Gee Dad, can I..."
Cold as fuck riding in the winter. Good luck
i see this being HIGHLY useful in Ukraine, if it had a small plow on the front. it could be driven to a trench line and dig in on the spot, or disengaged from the front and moved at will. any issue of lack of armor would be nullified from the fact that it was dug in.
Nah. The British Scorpion is already in Ukraine which is slightly more capable. Plus I doubt it would make it to Ukraine in time. First it will have to be approved by Germany and we've seen what a fiasco that is, then it will have to undergo maintenance and upgrades. By the time it makes it to Ukraine it will be September 2023 at the earliest.
as shown by huge losses of m113s and m113 style vehicles like the ypr armor is needed against a conventional army
@@sirxavior1583 what are you talking about. if germany wants to send them they can send them whenever they want. Even by sending leopard 2 tanks and even with the entire training it not even toke them 2 months. Without traning material is there not even a week after decision. by the way the scorpion is totally useless and cant be compared to the wiesel in any way, its a totally different type of wiesel its like comparing a ifv with a mbt. its 4 times heavier and has only 40 shots on 76mm. its a totally falsely chosen calibre to be used as infantry support. a wiesel has 20mm like a ifv, tow rockets, anti aircraft rockets, 120 mm mörser. how many of the 3000 produced scorpions did brittian give to ukraine?
