All staff should experience being a guest at the Savoy. Even if just for breakfast which should be an example of a pleasant experience. My family met up just for morning tea there years ago, the service and atmosphere was charming.
honestly, the working atmosphere portrayed behind the scenes and the way the "leaders" talk to their staff explains beautifully why hospitality has such a challenge finding staff ... from the pretentious head butler to the whistling chef ... interesting, some people still flock to places like this to have them on their resume ...
I couldn't agree more. That aggressive, abusive style is completely stuck in the 19th century. Completely unacceptable in a modern working environment. Watching that head butler go from back room tyrant to scuttling, scraping, bowing crab-like creature really put me off. So insincere. And the guests. So shallow. This guy knows his job, people pay a great amount for this service and should get it, anyone who has worked in the service industry, in any hotel knows the standards, from being yelled at by the chef’s , to the chamber maids ,the pressure is amazing, and reputations are on the line, to be the best , to experience a grand beautiful hotel.
I infinitely appreciate and respect the hard working staff with all their skills and dedication than I do Talal. Talal just hit the jackpot and owns an oil well or two. Who cares. Those staff are best of British. They're the type of people who put Britain on the map.
This is why we have such a rivalry with the French. They introduced the class system here in the UK (Norman's) and the concept of snobbery, sneering down your nose at people just because you have wealth. They single handedly caused the French revolution, and the peasants revolt here, all because they couldn't help being snobby, so the normal people snapped! This is why, even around middle and upper class circles now, it is very frowned upon in British society to gloat about how much you have.
Having just watched a series about the Mandarin Oriental. The Savoy looks really shabby in comparison. The Savoy staff were inexperienced and working under a fright driven regime. This showed very obviously and was quite uncomfortable. Unbelievable moments that stood out among many, were covering a stain on the carpet with a wrinkled offcut and gleefully thinking it wouldn't be noticed, and the fact that even a simple and respectful thing like wearing a poppy correctly was overlooked. No reception desk and no luggage in the hall means no beating heart to the hotel. Over all the impression was sadly one out of ten.
I totally agree with everything you wrote. After seeing this documentary, openly showing how they treat their staff, I would avoid the Savoy as though it were Ebola. It's absolutely appalling.
That carpet stain cover up was ludicrous! For the owner to have a wrinkled bit of rug and an ottoman on top in a walkway ridiculous!! Surely with all the expertise available it should have been cleaned ages before the King arrived
I can appreciate the high standard of quality that is matched with hard work and effort in attaining such a feat. Similarly, at one time back in the 1980's, I worked for a wealthy family in Regents Park who lived in one of the white grand classic Doric column mansion villas which overlook the park. My role there was that of cook/ Housekeeper working nearly 24/7 with only one day off. Whenever parties at the house were held, the pressure was enormous to perfect everything down to the last detail. For instance, out would come the matching eiderdown quilt to match with the curtains and the carpet fibres in the one room had to be brushed exactly to an upright position with me on my hands and knees crawling around on the floor to achieve it. So it was a lot of work between us. And of course, the gold taps in the en suite needed brushing up to attain their bright sheen. A chauffeur and one other housemaid and myself made up the entire staff to work and manage the daily running of the place. The Mayfair laundry was always a key feature with folding items to be packed and sent off for cleaning each week. That was a job in itself! There were times, madam ( she was addressed by) would shout the place down if things weren't done to her satisfaction despite the tireless hours of toil and hard work. I am glad I did it when I did as it was an eye opener working in 'high society'! So when I look at this documentary, I feel a bit tense, feeling the enormous pressure that is put on the staff to try and please and accommodate such requirements and needs. They do well to take the criticism levelled at them, inorder to better themselves as part of the establishment they have become. They all deserve a medal....

Actually, I think it is ridiculous to keep to one’s home country’s time zone. Traveling gives one the opportunity to learn the other countries’ cultures. Only those who feel inferior insist on maintaining their culture everywhere. The Queen of England adjusted herself to the locals’ cultures and standards. When Michelle Obama touched the Queen, the media made a big fuss. The Queen downplayed the faux pas. Of course, once again, the ignorant make mistakes. No other first lady ever put a foot wrong. All Obama did was display bad manners and ignorance which was probably expected. After all, Mahatma Gandhi arrived at the palace dressed in his usual Indian garb, displaying his social inferiority, his arrogance, his foolishness in not dressing for the English climate, etc. His lack of respect for others did not diminish them, but it definitely diminished him greatly. I’m sure he was laughed at and/or pitied behind palace doors.

That butler needs to calm down. He should exercise patience when dealing with new employees & have more confidence in his returning staff. After being in service for 25 years I have learned that when I’m stressed everyone is stressed. That’s when things really start falling apart. I tell my team to know your job & keep smiling. If you’ve done your best work & still everything didn’t come off perfectly? Fuck it. Tomorrow’s another day. No job is worth developing an ulcer.
That Head Butler needs an extensive course on 'How to treat people with respect'. He shouldn't be allowed to talk to people SO RUDELY!! Doesn't give The Savoy a very professional image.
WHEN I SAW HOW THE STAFF ALLOWED TRASH TO SIT OUT IN THE HALLWAY AND THE PRINCE CAME RIGHT UP THE STAIRS AND HAD TO WALK RIGHT PASS IT I WAS DUMBFOUNDED.........DID YOU SEE THE LOOK ON THE PRINCES FACE AS HE NOTICED IT???
This had previously been pointed out to the General manager before the Princes arrival. Then on the walk about with the Prince he made out that he knew nothing about it !!!
Like at school and work, we hated the strictest teachers and bosses at the time, but later in life, you realise the strictest teachers and bosses were the best one's who taught you the most and then appreciated them, the butler is correct. Having working at the Savoy for a few years is a big credit on a CV. If you can't handle it, it's not for you and maybe an Asda or Tesco or a Travel Lodge is for you.
No sorry. I hope you are not a manager then. There is a HUGE difference between being strict and expecting everyone to present themselves in accordance with the standards of the hotel, to being condescending, arrogant and putting people down. It appears you cannot separate the latter from the former. Please don’t manage people - in my 25 years I’ve seen managers sacked for that because they didn’t know the difference and moral hit rock bottom.
I hate role playing in work, you make mistakes, laugh at eachother, but when you are working in real time, you are well prepared and the best of you comes out
I worked at the Four Seasons in Vancouver Bc Canada and know what service should be and in no way was the managment staff hard on the employees at this level of service you must be better than the hotel down the street . No matter who it is . ❤❤❤❤❤😊 they all did A Great Job !!👍👏😀
Ive been to the prestigeous Savoy in the 1990s informally acompanied by my beautiful late titled mummys relation Prince Philip the last of the real Aristocrats.Oh i do wish your hotel success.
The Savoy Hotel in London is such a luxury hotel in London for the affluent millionaires and great familes in London need to help people in need all round the world 🌎
I would try the new refurbished Savoy because of the very personable owner Prince Alwalid of Kuwait and for the river suite Thames views. I hope it’s a huge success.
I disagree, Stephen Fry is their "Blogger in Residence" he's more an employee than a guest. And if he is a guest, he's being greeted with a heartier welcome than the regular guests, because of his status in the hotel.
I have been following the Savoy series on the tv. I think it is a great hotel and fascinating what happens behind the scenes. Does anyone else dislike the head butler Sean? I hate the way he treats his staff such arrogance instead of encouraging new staff he seems to take great delight in ripping them to pieces.
the whistling head chef is lovely and just gently encouraging his staff to get the food out. the butler's 25 yrs of experience suggests he was trained 25 years ago and sadly hasn't changed. 3 years and 3 weeks to prepare and the rubbish the Prince had to pass was inexcusable, don't leave crap in a boardroom when 2 royal families are due to arrive. the Manager's curt "toast' to 'Savoy' could've been grander, and more welcoming. pay 220 MILLION, to have to walk past garbage that shouldn't be there on your first walk through. that's really shocking.
Very very impressive 👏 I look forward to my first visit to London. And no doubt will be staying at the Savoy. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ I want to meet the head Butler. 😉
Sean should work at The Ritz. He'd fit right in given his exacting standards. I'd rate the Savoy second only to The Ritz. From there it's the Dorchester, Claridges, Connaught, etc.
His attitude would not work at the Ritz but given today's paying Clients. He could get away with anything. That should answer Yiu correctly. They are all the same 'Hotels)))))
Linda Justin well you are right i use to work at savoy as a waitress they treat you like a worthless property and actually there has been many many issues raised about the mistreatment and payment for employees, it is a very toxic environment
My goodness so much fuss. But I suppose filthy rich people expect all that. The bar looks fabulous! The river restaurant very elegant, I like that. All the workers are trying so hard. I think they are impressive workers, some have never worked in hotels before. I like this video it's interesting to see the goings on behind the scenes! :)
Sonia Hamilton oh indeed i use to a waitress in Savoy, Ritz and landmark they are all too much specially Savoy has a very toxic environment, they have one of the highest rate of employee leave

So much fuss for a hotel. The fact that all these people are gathering for is just the luxury of the hotel itself makes them all look ridiculous. Luxury without purpose is just absurd. This is like going to a rolls Royce just to sit in it and not because you wanna get somewhere using it.
When passing through London in the 1960s, I had the occasional drink in the Savoy. I thought the decor a little tired and the waiter I often had, although efficient, wore ill-fitting tails and yellowing, plastic collar and cuffs.

In a similar documentary about the Claridge's the personell, from the general manager to the housekeeping maids seemed a lot nicer. The head butler here seems rude and has some weird, alligator stare, which is creepy!
I was the first person to treat my staff with kindness and respect as head butler 😊 their people and need kindness your respected
He says he’s quite demanding and quite direct. Oh,he forgot to say that he’s quite rude too.
Exactly.
I wonder if Stephen Fry has seen this documentary?! Specifically the parts about how the management treat the staff!
The bald head/lead butler clearly likes the look of Oliver
I don't blame him.

As soon as they mentioned Elle McPhereson I was put off. She is known to be a snotty birch who does not talk to "the help". She communicates with them via an assistant.
I don't think she is relevant!
I became curious after watching James Corden’s “Take a Break” video 👀
Sacked everyone when they closed for refurbishment. Bet all the new staff are on zero hour contracts too. The rich always pay the least.
lts a business, not a charity !
It's a business, not a charity"!.. I can sum up in a nano second which side of the fence you're on.. If it wasn't for hard working staff.. Sweat, blood and tears.. You wouldn't have the luxury of experiencing such 'splendour' Staff that partake in such establishments are overlooked everyday and not appreciated.. And yes, the pay is shameful.. I don't have the time of day for ignorant individuals who are born into privilege without one empathic bone in their bodies for those far less fortunate.. Attitudes will never change.. Human nature will remain ugly and poisonous.. Thank God I can see through this vile veil of self superiority!!. Money doesn't make the world go round.. Love does!!.. And there needs to be a damn lot more of that in this world!!!.. Stick your fat wallets where the sun doesn't shine!!!!!
Well said
Thank you 👍
That is unfortunately how the rich stay rich. They don't give a toss about those who line their pockets for them.
I like this guy very much. If we had more Mgr like him, we would have excellent service in all professions
He's right...it looks like a shower curtain!
I love the remark.
English people and their prints
Those printed fabrics are everywhere at the Dorchester, but their shower curtains are plain. LOL

The concierge lead guy is being so rude to the staff! That's no how you groom your team!
Mean the head butler? Because I didn't see anything about the concierge.
@@michaelcook4194 the old fag is friendly to one but just because he has a crush on him...
It is when you work at a top Establishment!

Narcissists are notoriously CEO'S and managers. Results are all based on the bottom line. $$
I dig the tiny patch of hair on the front of the gay "Head" butler's head, .... HELLO FRISCO !!!
The princess is soooooo beautiful, natural and friendly.
I like that Australian guy. I'd choose him for my butler.
Neal Wilson it’s New Zealand
New Zealander not Australian

That butler needs to calm down. He should exercise patience when dealing with new employees & have more confidence in his returning staff. After being in service for 25 years I have learned that when I’m stressed everyone is stressed. That’s when things really start falling apart.
I tell my team to know your job & keep smiling. If you’ve done your best work & still everything didn’t come off perfectly?
Fuck it. Tomorrow’s another day.
No job is worth developing an ulcer.
Well said Mitch. I did for 35i years and and I met both make and female arseholes like him
The butler as seen towards the end won't cut it. Like it or not, a butler has to be a good servant & never question it outside of his own head.
Ollie is a cutie.
Most definitely 😍🤤😍
The head butler obviously thinks so too 😂
❤🙏🧘👌🤝♥️❤And so beautiful the restoration all with a particular detail if it boils so much discipline 👌🤝♥️
The rug over the stain on the carpet looks like something is being hidden.😮
There's a huge difference between being strict and being rude. That butler is just downright rude.
I remember my first kiss on the river bank right in front of a Savoy. Somewhere around a midnight. Me and my ex had a good night out that time.
Bet he was a nice fella
You homophobic kiwi lol
Yep
I hate role playing in work, you make mistakes, laugh at eachother, but when you are working in real time, you are well prepared and the best of you comes out
Love how real and honest Ollie is. I can see why the head butler wants him to take lead (not sure if he did xD).
Is there not a single man on that hotel staff who knows how to knot a tie?
The butlers and the other stuff are so friendly and humorous
Ive been to the prestigeous Savoy in the 1990s informally acompanied by my beautiful late titled mummys relation Prince Philip the last of the real Aristocrats.Oh i do wish your hotel success.
The Savoy Hotel in London is such a luxury hotel in London for the affluent millionaires and great familes in London need to help people in need all round the world 🌎
i stayed at the savoy thay upgraded us to a suite; the hotel food and service was excellent
Stephen Fry. WHY ???????????!
They will have a tough act to follow as far as service is concerned Claradiges is a master at it ❤
Claridges is not that great either
Now I know why I don't go to the place.
One can live without the Savoy Life Style.
And Then There Was Light ~ LightHearted Swan
I would try the new refurbished Savoy because of the very personable owner Prince Alwalid of Kuwait and for the river suite Thames views. I hope it’s a huge success.
He is from Saudi Arabia not Kuwait
9:49 the butler shouldn't touch the guest .. it's ok to shake hands (if guest want) but not to touch the guest's back, shoulder..
I disagree, Stephen Fry is their "Blogger in Residence" he's more an employee than a guest. And if he is a guest, he's being greeted with a heartier welcome than the regular guests, because of his status in the hotel.
I love Stephen Fry!
I did. I worked in 5 star. Hotels and am a hygenic too. If he speak to me in that tone I'd smack him one. Arrogant
Absolutely hate him. There is a way to be assertive, and that's not it. He is just a cunt, excuse the language. Terrible person.
the whistling head chef is lovely and just gently encouraging his staff to get the food out. the butler's 25 yrs of experience suggests he was trained 25 years ago and sadly hasn't changed.
Amazing story 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻loved this documentary
Love, Ollie. Best of the bunch !
A new owner and 600 all-new staff given six weeks training and then expected to hit the ground running.... at The Savoy? What could possibly go wrong?
Very very impressive 👏 I look forward to my first visit to London. And no doubt will be staying at the Savoy. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ I want to meet the head Butler. 😉
I can't imagine dedicating my life to being someone's butler then having an ego like that. What a bastard.
In a wise words of young Ollie : " Plenty of bull-sheet"
I just love it since i was 23 that was 1985
Sean should work at The Ritz.
I should add the Goring Hotel, recipient of a Royal Warrant. It was a favourite of HM Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother.
@@jslasher1 The Goring is nice!
@@edwardmcilwain2139 Veddy, veddy nice.
BRAVO !
The Savoy staff look on edge, the gm is not confident and even said...oh god. Compare this to Claridges and they are poles apart.
The staff aren't paid enough to work at that hotel.
This isn't a warm or intimate environment.
Linda Justin They rarely are now at this level. Brown’s had a reputation for warm human relations at one time.

Sean is in love with Oliver, I think 😅
They should have done away with the stripes on the wallpaper in the Hallways.
When that man put the cover over thats stain on the carpet 😮 I i said Claridges would never
A lot of people didn't like the refurbishments.
So much for the elite,so many people starving, shameful.
💯
VETERAN SCOTS GUARDS...LITTLE SAD TO SEE STAFF SO PASSIONATE ABOUT WELTHY PEOPLE DO THEY HAVE PASSION FOR THE LORD JESUS CHRIST WHO CAN GIVE THEM ENTRANCE TO HEAVEN AND SALVATION ...RESPECT FOR WEALTH WITHOUT RESPECT FOR THE STAFF AND WORKING CLASSS SUCH SNOBERY.......I'M SAD FOR
If London ever gets back in order we may visit again.
Would love to stay at the Savoy.
So much fuss for a hotel. The fact that all these people are gathering for is just the luxury of the hotel itself makes them all look ridiculous.
Luxury without purpose is just absurd. This is like going to a rolls Royce just to sit in it and not because you wanna get somewhere using it.
Great perspective ^^ thank you.
When passing through London in the 1960s, I had the occasional drink in the Savoy. I thought the decor a little tired and the waiter I often had, although efficient, wore ill-fitting tails and yellowing, plastic collar and cuffs.
"Get outta m' way becuz I'll drop it on your head now in a minnit." Beautiful Irish accent.💖🇮🇪

Yeah! He really has something, doesn't he?
Yea kinda falling in love with him, cute! and charismatic
no! sean is a star!
Nowhere as near as organised as claridges, the way they talk to there staff is vile
Room service and housekeeping service in most 5 star hotels/resorts in Asia are on par with having butler service.
Stephen Fry always looks like he slept in a hedge, love him though. Ollie wouldn't or sound out of place in Downton Abbey, classically handsome!
😂
Very true, and you think Oliver is devine.
what anxiety, I would not do that kind of job for a million dollar!
