Helped with my decision. 704 it is! Now on the hunt for a dealership in Wichita America.

Do You feel Kawai or Yamaha or Casio has a compelling alternative to the HP 704? Not playing the pianos in person i prefer the Roland and Kawai sounds. Yamaha feels too perfect and cold. Casio not as nuanced but im relying on my phone speaker so i realize in person its likely a different story.

I am on record about Kawai and Casio. Neither of them have anywhere near the service record Roland and Yamaha do. ...and - when it comes to authenticity and customizability of tone - I don't think Casio even comes close. That has alot to do with the fact that Roland is the only fully-modeled piano sound in the home digital piano market right now. That gives them a depth of nuance and control that none of the others have. The next best thing Kawai had was the CA-59, but it's out of production right now I believe. ...AND it's more money! There just isn't anything out there right now that can compete with that HP-704. Bang for the buck, it's a clear winner!

My pleasure. ...and - just so you don't think I am crazy - here are some numbers for you: A sampled piano sound (Yamaha, Kawai, Casio, etc.) has a hard limit of 128 volume levels per key. A fully modeled piano sound (Roland) has a hard limit of about 16,000 - 20,000 on their latest "PureAcoustic" chips. As you can see, the Roland sound is a far higher "resolution" than the others. That's why you can enjoy all that nuance and color.
That said, the others are using modeling to clean up their sampled sounds (which Roland did about 8 years ago), but that doesn't change the dynamic limit. That's a hard limit built-into the sampling technology.
I hope that helps! Thanks for a great question!

@@RivertonPianoCompany understood, and thanks foe those insights. I will focus on Roland and Yamaha. Now to find some to play on and see how they sound in person and feel. Yamaha has a YDP 165 and S55 and Roland has the DP 609 if im going to keep it to about $1600- $2,000. And then yamahas YDP -184 and Rolands HP 702 take it to $2800-$3800 a big step up. Im thinking my wife will object to that much.

Howdy again! If you're looking in the $1600-$2000 range, you have to try the RP701. It's tech is FAR newer than the DP-603 and LIGHT YEARS ahead of anything in the Yamaha YDP series. In the $2800-$3800 range, you want to check out the HP-704. That's my highest recommendation. ...and - if you can't make the 704 work, look at the 702 or RP701. Have fun trying them out!
