Holy hell, what tf did I just watch? I've seen the movie a few times, and even saw the show on broadway about 10 years ago, and it's almost like I've never seen it before? Why oh why have I never seen Evita with Patti LuPone?! That one performance puts a totally different spin on the character that I've never seen before. That was amazing.
What a fuckin CRACKPOT! Up until this moment I thought it was Madonna who lacked talent. This woman is definitely NOT RIGHT IN THE HEAD! Madonna's the one who nailed it. ..just ask the critics who's opinions count like um.. Andrew Lloyd-Webber, Tim Rice, Gene Siskel, Roger Ebert.
This is my favorite performance of this song, brings chills. She puts tons of energy in it, her strong voice makes your bones vibrate. She is a star, and a true diva, you just need to look at her eyes to realize it. Outstanding vitality, she's an inspiration of how a true performer should use his passion.
She is f*cking incredible...her stage presence is ridiculously strong...she managed to keep her feet planted the entire time and still command the stage. I don't think people realize how hard it is to do that..
None of you get it. She's not singing it the way she sang it on stage. She's taken a song totally out of context, minus the back-up singers and is just singing the hell out of it for fun. It's the version from her night club act and no she isn't screaming. If she sang it the same way wherever she went it would get boring.
Correct. While it is similar to how she actually sang it onstage it is also purposely played up. Onstage, she is getting dressed in a quick-change sequence during this song. Here, she just standing there and I'm sure she wanted to inject some extra Ooomph! since it's now all about her and not her and the staging, costumes, lighting, show. With that talent, I don't blame her one bit, hehe.
Yes she did a different take but no the less her conviction and the level of sound she is abil to reach is truly outstanding. She did this night after night live for years
Wonderful. It is extremely interesting, hearing her sing this rendition without the background vocals (eyes hair mouth figure etc etc). A great performance.
She couldn't be any more wonderful !! And for all of you that are saying she overdid this performance, she played it the way the directors wanted her too for over 1700 performances !! So, If I were her, I would want to change things up a bit too, and I personally think she did it marvelously!!
I went to see Evita the year it hit Broadway. I was excited about seeing Mandy Patinkin who I was familiar with, but then I saw Lupone. I had not seen her before, I think she did mostly off-Broadway. I absolutely loved her performance. I thought that she was amazing.
SLAYED? lol. You could barely make out a word Lupone was singing. I can't imagine a 2hr movie with this kind of singing. Everyone and their mom knows Madonna was fantastic in Evita. Her voice had never sounded better. This performance looks like something that the anything BUT born this way singer, Gaga, would do. Lupone and Goobs are for Broadway and lounges. Nothing wrong with that, but Goober completely lacks any of the 'it' or X factor to be a pop star. Tis why her pop star burnt out in 2011.
You're comparing apples to oranges. They both brought something different to each role. I also saw Patti as strong, commanding Latin woman, unapologetic, telling her people how things were gonna be, she made it out of poverty and was never looking back, whereas Madonna seemed more vulnerable, seeking the love of her people, seeking validation and permission, who couldn't quite shake her poor roots. Madonna's Evita got swept up by what was going on, whereas Patti's CAUSED it.
Trent Totally LMAO NO Madonna sucked! She can’t act she’s a hell of a performer though like in her concerts. She can sing but her singing ability isn’t good enough for musical theatre.
You can defend Madonna all you want but this is the way it's suppose to sound. If you want to know what Andrew intended then listen to Patti and Elaine. They went through the process of having the role written for them. Yes Madonna sounds good, but as far as Evitas go she sucked. She changed the keys for like half the song and didn't literally anything. The entire novelty of the show is that it helped revolutionize Broadway belting. Patti is QUEEN
EVEN THOUGH I THINK PATTI IS ONE OF THE MOST TALENTED MUSICAL ACTRESSES OF ALL TIME I THINK THE DIRECTOR ASKED HER TO BE JUST TOO MUCH, MAKING A PARODY OF EVITA. IT WAS SIMPLY OVER THE TOP. BESIDES THAT PATTI IS OUTSTANDING
Patti sounds like an angry Jewish mother from Brooklyn. SHe sings the same way on every song. MAdonna brought humanity to the character. Not to mention, she looks a lot like Eva did.
I am laughing reading these comments because they’re either one extreme or the other (love her or hate her). There’s no denying she’s super talented, but I have to agree that this performance is overdone. She is a diva. Watch her UA-cam video in which she stops the performance of Gypsy to yell at audience members using cellphones.
Why is she yelling and dropping the end of the "high?" She's slouching the note into an awkward flat tone. Cringe. This isn't even good karaoke. Patti's voice is harsh and lacks music/depth. I'm baffled.
Terrible acting, horrid phrasing, words running into each other, slurring vocal delivery and style, strange and ugly tones. There is no beauty in this voice. Just power. The unpleasant characteristics mentioned above are deployed in every song she sings. Has absolutely no understanding of different shades, colors or nuance when singing. She is even worse on faster songs. She is dead behind the vocal chords.
You’d be surprised how many ‘straight’ plays LuPone has done. She received a lot of criticism from critics when she returned to non-musicals after Evita.
I’ve never EVER given a thumbs down to a video - until now. Goodness gracious, I know she’s an accomplished singer, and I know that she made that role her own, but is she possessed here? She’s yelling out these beautiful lyrics so aggressively, that it’s impossible to even understand what shes saying.
Gawd, this is awful. She way overdoes it almost to the point of being cartoonish. I know she's a diva but jeez, pull it in a freakin' notch. Sorry all you LuPone fanboys but Elena Roger FTW.
Yes, Elena Roger a woman so talented that they had to double cast her because she couldn't keep up with the role of Eva Peron. Please, get some sense man! Learn your history and realize that this woman is performing for the stage and not for TV. You can keep your fragile, small-voiced actors, I'll take a Patti Lupone Straight up.
Christopher Piracci She performed in a similar theatrical style on stage. It may seem over the top on TV but I thought it was obvious that stage and screen are two different mediums and if you invite a stage actor to sing a theatrical song on TV, you're gonna get the theatrical version because that's what they're sampling. Why tone it down just because people are too daft to realize this? EDIT: sorry christopher, that was meant for jakerson181.
Sinister Concept Double cast her? What the hell are you talking about? Everyone who has played Evita has had an alternate to do 2 performances a week including Patti. Learn your history schmuck.
LaMisere HQ Whether on stage or for TV, she's still over the top. That's just Patti. It has absolutely zero to do with being too daft. I knew I'd offend you LuPone fanboys. Sorry if I made you clutch your pearls. Go back to worshipping your idol.

I don't understand people who don't get Patti Lupone. This is Broadway 101. Old fashioned way. She takes a song and NAILS it. I adore her.
I don't think, at least I've never heard than Evita had mental problems and was hysteric as she portrays her
SHES BOONKED ON COCAINE
Nails it?! WTF? She fuckin acts like Godzilla while singing this! Lmfao ..and SHE'S FLAT on a note or two!
Please tell me you're joking.
She's just screaming this out of her throat as if she was drunk. Don't like it at all! Madonna's interpretation was beautiful and powerful.
This is my favorite performance of this song, brings chills.
She puts tons of energy in it, her strong voice makes your bones vibrate.
She is a star, and a true diva, you just need to look at her eyes to realize it.

Jacob Samples its easier when you're on cocaine
She's a monster. A fabulous Broadway monster. Bow down to Patti. X
She definitely is a monster all right and no I won’t, ever
Back in the day when people ACTUALLY performed live. The woman has pipes like nobody in the history of Broadway.
Except for Elaine Paige
Ethel Merman really sang
@@robcrisall787 Elaine was slowly killing her voice - the comparison doesn’t hold
This performance of Patti Lupone of rainbow high is now my whole personality

She's FUCKING SCREAMMMMINNNNG!
The way she sings just consumes my whole being... extremely appealing and attractive
Coke fueled performances are really amazing. They are intoxicating.
She was rainbow high. :-)
yes
Wonderful. It is extremely interesting, hearing her sing this rendition without the background vocals (eyes hair mouth figure etc etc). A great performance.
0:02 The fountain was killing it
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Not only is she an amazing performer and a great person but also insanely beautiful. I seriously can’t

I think I've watched this a million times. GENIUS.
she is amazing in every way her vocals alone then put her acting skills on top....
I love her so much!
She is amazing in every way this song is crazy.
My right ear enjoyed this
I like your singing voice, Yellow Diamond.
I wanna see yellow D singing this song XD
Me too

Omg she is genuinely walking goddess😍
She is that
Patti LuPone is the best Evita. She supersedes all the others by far!
If people think she's over the top. Well, they don't know Broadway. It's different than acting in movies or TV. She did great!
Out standing these people in the audience had no idea what was installed for them. Outstanding
She’s a force ! I’m speechless 😂😂😂😂
Patti is the ultimate broadway queen
Ms. Lupone nailed this fantastic tune 100%
Yesss. She’s killing it
This is just perfect - I cant even!
Lol I’m her memoir she said she was high on coke when she did this performance.
she was a major coke head
I adore her honesty tho! Everyone would have denied it
What show is this on? How did you know it was this performance lol
josh miller girl idk read her book
Alex I apparently it was Merv Griffin. I guess she didn’t mention it by name. I was just curious how you knew it was this one
This performance gives me confidence !
"So Lauren Bacall me"... Lauren Bacall passed away just yesterday. Playing this song thinking of her.
Agreed, but there is a better version available than this one
Patti LaPone, goddess.
Que maravilhosa 😍😊👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
wow...no one can sing like her
Patti is badass.
That fountain!!!
The hair flip at the beginning 😹😹
WOW!!!!
Brilliant!
This is what's called a montage folks. And she was really the only Evita besides the actual Evita.....
Montage? Isn’t that when they combine clips?
Maybe homage...??
I don’t really care for Miss Lupone’s peculiar vocal style, but I think her performance, here, is the best I’ve heard of this song.
Amazing gives 200%.
Why does she remind of Anne Hathaway. I would've loved an evita film with patti in it
I think she just slayed Madonna.

A master class....no pun intended since she did Master Class on Broadway. She is Broadway royalty.
Fierce.
Electrifying.
omg my ears are exploded
Well than, there needs to be a villain song on Steven Universe and this woman needs to sing it.
The BEST OF SONDEHEIM BROADWAY
Forgot all about Patti friggn powerhouse
Pure power.
Yellow Diamond got some pipes!
Hey she was the voice of yellow diamond
Làstima que el audio se escucha mal
you can't even put Madonna in the same category as Patti...Madonna's Evita was more than underwhelming. Patti's Eva is timeless. #checkit
+Kobe McKelvey Sorry, but Patti's singing hurts my ears...and her expressions make the song osund "dumb and silly"
I don't think, at least I've never heard than Evita had mental problems and was hysteric as she portrays her

PAUL FT u know this song was literally written for Patti, right?
Each works for their respective mediums. Patti is a larger than life Eva for Broadway and Madonna is an intimate presence for film.

The sound she makes at 1:22 is mildly disturbing....
DIVA
spiderman far from home
I never believed I would say that Madonna's version is much much emotional to me instead of this exagerating 😕
Not a Patti fan at all but it was funny how they turned on the cheesy fountain a little too late
when you search rainbow high:
Good, God. Imagine being around her when she as a fit.
Why is she yelling and dropping the end of the "high?" She's slouching the note into an awkward flat tone. Cringe. This isn't even good karaoke. Patti's voice is harsh and lacks music/depth. I'm baffled.
She's singing it too fast and without the backup chorus. It's basically trampling on both the lyrics and the melody.
What a disaster, no feelings at al, vocal frying! My god
She called madonna box office poison with dead eyes, at least she doesn't sound like she snorted 3 lines before singing ...
she did more than 3 trust
I prefer Julie Covington the 'original Evita' (albeit only on the concept album.) Her voice was so soft and delicately emotional.
Christ almighty. She's taking this song and beating everyone over the head with it!! Broadway or not, this is overdoing it.
🤕
Patti... LESS is the key.
I love Patti and her voice....but this is probably my least favourite performance. I don’t know....I just don’t think this song needs to be so angry.
Less is MORE maybe🤷🏻♂️ not for me…
at 1:06 it sounded like she messed up a note
She’s waiting for the music to catch up
I love and understand Patti´s style, but I think this interpretation is just too much

This is why Madonna is Evita she looks insane lol
Well, now she makes no sound at all!
Horrific. To me, this is actually unlistenable.

worst Evita for me.
