- There would appear to be just two complete videos of Patti LuPone in "Evita" on Broadway, both shot in 1980; one features Tom Carder, understudy to Mandy Patinkin. Clips of both have been widely seen but just for the record, here are the two versions of "Rainbow High."

Wow. Driving the show with pure vocal muscle AND physical stamina. Such confidence. Patti is remarkable. An athlete. A musical theater olympian. The conductor stands out as the best too. They worked well with Patti here. ...and Mandy is the perfect vocal opposition to Patti. Gorgeous sound. Thank you for posting!!!
What a treasure. NO ONE sings Evita better. Thank you Spiderwoman!
LuPone as Evita (or Gypsy) is like Callas as Violetta or Norma.. "How can you have rivals when no one else can do what you can do??". Astonishing. Definitive
Umm... Loni Ackerman
@@chrisjacobs7417 And where is she?
@@Chaneloweenz still performing as far as I know. She went on to have a considerable list of Broadway and national touring credits, not to mention the countries regional shows she's done.
@@Chaneloweenz there are plenty of bootlegs of her from Evita on here
Those high notes, the key change, the way they put on the scarf when she sings "dressed up," sublime
That "dressed up" moment is the greatest.
It’s a fur wrap, not a scarf, baby. ❤️
@@auroraspiderwoman5886 For my money, THE greatest diva moment in Broadway history. Made even better by the fact that it was organic, and not at all forced. For me, it transcends camp. And I've seen many other women do the "dressed up" fur wrap thing. Elaine Paige, Loni Ackerman, Florence Lacey, and some others. For whatever reason, none of them worked it like La LuPone. BTW aurora, thank you for posting this, and all the other amazing gems. You're incredible.
Those high notes... and then she gets annoyed when chorus members fuck off at the interval? Yeah quite right!
The fur wrap is the finest moment in the history of the American stage
You can feel such energy exuding from her in these clips. This must have been mind-blowingly electric in the house. Thank you so much for posting!
I wanted to see her as Evita desperately. I went to a March 1980 Wednesday Matinee. Sadly, her understudy played the matinees (8 shows a week would be too straining for her voice!) I was crushed when I realized I missed her. But, I did see Mandy as Che, which was a pretty nice consolation. Still, no one else is Evita but Patti!
I saw her twice! Most powerful performance I have ever seen!
"No one else can fill it like I can"... 40 years later, and yeah, 100%
...watching a star being born. (Just re-watched this: Note the prop handoffs at 5:40 - mirror, gloves, jewelry, etc....sneaky sneaky!)
I can remember being addicted to this Broadway Cast Album in 1981 when I was starting college. The high-flying vocal and orchestral score and the words were motivating to me as I started to research who Eva Peron actually was and how she ascended to power. Her will and drive made me want to push myself with my own life, goals, etc. The show was so energizing.
I feel exactly the same way over 40 years later. Both Patti and Eva have inspired me to pursue performing arts! I just started college this academic year - due my BA graduation in 2025!
I still know every word to every song! I used to think I could have stepped into any role! lol
My god! That staging, the production design, that score and of course Patti and Mandy! Back before the days of streaming I think I went through three or four CD copies of this production. I’m not sure any production can ever match the pure electricity of the original Prince production of Evita. Thank you so much for posting this Spiderwoman!
Glad you liked and no, no other production of "Evita" will ever match the electricity of Prince's original.
So true! The “newer” staging of Evita is a big bore fest. 🥱
@@bookemdano7567 There was a production in Regent’s Park in London that you might have enjoyed for capturing the energy and drama, rather than trying for accurate design.
No one else even comes close.
No contest! She’s the only true Evita!
The way the fur wrap is placed on her when she sings “dressed-up-somewhere-to-go” in rhythm gets me every time. 😊
Watch the prop handoffs behind her at 5:40.
Absolutely thrilling! To tell the truth, I didn't even know of a second video, and this is also the first time I can say I'm SEEING the more commonly-circulated one, so thank you for having shared them!
Patti AND Mandy! Thank you so much for these. It’s wonderful to hear them sound just as amazing live as they did on the cast recording. I wish there was a full length version of their High Flying, Adored, though.
Spiderwoman you are too kind. Old boots just warm my heart. Especially of such iconic performances.
Absolute legend 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 and Mandy perfection!
I play this song sometimes when I'm getting dressed in the morning...lmfao
THANK YOU a million times for this absolute treasure.
A supernatural performance.
God, she's sublime. ❤ Thank you so much for sharing this.
Wow! I'd heard rumors that the clearer version existed somewhere - I should have known you'd be the one to have it. It's so wonderful to see! As always, thanks so much for sharing. You make so many people happy with the things you share.
So nice of you to say so--very glad you enjoyed.
My copy has some tracking issues. These 2 versions are high definition in comparison to mine. Wonderful to see, but also upsetting as i cant find a copy thats similar lol x
Oh gosh, please, I need to watch Patti in Evita :") I don't care how dark, bad, or shaky the quality is... I'm a new fan and I completely fell in love with her Evita! I want a copy so bad :")
Wow. Auroa I gotta say, the second one is the BEST quality I've seen this tape in. Other versions seem a few generations removed from the original. Thanks so much for posting. It is a real crime that there is no pro-shot version of this with La LuPone and Mandy Patinkin. It would be so great to have a clear, clean video of her brilliant performance.
It’s interesting to see how her voice developed and coped with the role across the two videos (same for the Buenos Aires clips you posted). In the earlier clips you can hear a rasp in the lower register which suggests she was struggling with getting down there at the time. However in the later March clips, she sounds more like the Patti we know and love (way more nasal and over-annunciating), which are probably things she picked up doing the role by trying to get through this extremely demanding score for anyone. I prefer the second clips, she sounds and acts way more confident and commanding.
Just so you know, the second clips were shot earlier than the first ones...
@@wickedfan811 Actually, the second clips were shot two months later.
@@wickedwizard5377 wait a minute...
The B&W clip was shot in the 1980. There's no exact date for it.
While the one with Mandy - and the second one also - was shot on the 30th November 1979.
@@wickedfan811 There is no November 1979 video, that's just a mislabel. The Tom Carder video was shot on January 10, 1980 and the OBC video was shot on March 10, 1980.
Thank you, Aurora, I love this! True star quality!
such a bummer that these are the only two! i figured if anyone would have had more it would've been you - but god, seeing these two in such low generation is mindblowing enough
Thanks---the only reason I added these to my channel is that I thought they might be slightly better quality than the versions you've always seen. And I doubt there are any other complete Patti/"Evita" videos---even Lincoln Center/NYPL Theater on Film and Tape collection did not record the Broadway "Evita" until Loni Ackerman had taken over.
@@auroraspiderwoman5886 can confirm. I watched the Lincoln Center copy and it’s Loni who is INCREDIBLE but I did want to see Patti. However I wasn’t a fan of her Che.
just perfection
Incredible!! I know there is a bit of pro shot footage of LuPone in Evita, would you happen to have any clips??
Thank you so much!
The 3rd guy in "Let's go" is holding an expanding diamante bracelet, which he deposits on her arm on the down beat. Here in New Zealand, Michelle Breeze played the role first time around, and the guy held the bracelet open like a tunnel, and she slammed her hand through the bracelet at the same point. The jewellery was covered in fine net so the stones wouldn't catch on the costumes.
Thanks!!!
Legendary.
Patti is a hurricane, wow
I wish there was a full show bootleg on Patti’s evita lol
There is.
@@beaellie9766 where?????!!!
@@musicalsplays3583 Hold on a bit....I'm getting the contact info. It might take me a few weeks
There is? Where?
That’s so cool
@@beaellie9766 any news? :)
Saw her in the OBC.
A pirated video, taken from backstage?
While I am not a fan of Lupone’s singing, hers is, without question, the best all-around performance of this song-dramatically as well as vocally. If one listens to the lineup of performers who have starred in this production (see the UA-cam video, “Who sang the ‘A New Argentina’ High Notes The Best”), it becomes evident that, both vocally and dramatically, no other performer comes close to the level of mastery demonstrated by Ms. Lupone.
Bite your tongue!!! lol. I think she is perfection!
her voice is very harsh, she's just shouting for most of this
The over dramatic behavior is not necessary but it does fit the character of Eva Duarte de Peron.
What could be more necessary than character in theatre?
Love her BUT her diction is shocking. Listen to Caroline Bowman - Just my personal opinion
I just watch Bowman's version. Slower, no "guts" to it. Lovely voice but too "safe". The "properness" of the British really doesn't appeal to me.
LuPone has never learned to control the volume of that wailing. And it’s tiresome.
