Story? I'm sorry, I thought you said 'building' - Enshrouded

For me 75% of what makes a good survival game is a good building mechanic (SE, Valhiem) so this is a big plus for me. Nothing kills interest in a survival game than a bad building mechanic (Ark)
To me that feels perfectly fair :D
Yup fully agreed
agreed lol an i feel like splus mod for ark makes it more doable but still has so many flaws lol idk how console people have played ark for the pst few years lol no way i could play it without alot of mods that just fix the qol of building lol
@@DarhkCrizzus That's why I deleted the game. There were, typically, four or six, I can't remember, places on a wooden or stone foundation were you could snap a fence foundation to, which would allow you to snap pillars and walls to the foundation, which would allow you to build two or three story buildings IF the place where you snapped the initial fence foundation was the right one or the walls and windows on the 2nd floor wouldn't line up. It was maddening.
Curious, what game does “SE” stand for? I love games with good building mechanics like valheim
Indeed, I'm all like "Oh, Story you say? Quests I need to do? I couldn't hear you over the sound of my Hammer building this thing".
The developers have no idea what they're about to unleash giving you such fine control (small cubes, free placement of items) over building things. There will be so much greebling... 😆
Glad to see you found this, seemed a perfect game for you and Capac Keen games threw me at first too, with the voxel ground thought it was Keen Software incognito :) LOL the swing on the red barrel, that feeling in mid swing of oops.
The building looks great, but I really really really hope they can implement 22.5 and 45 degree rotations for building elements.
I have not been able to play anything for more than a few hours since this demo came out (which I missed!!!). I'm so happy I've found your very long 4-hour stream to watch to help tide me over. Also nice to find a new person to watch who also loves building/survival games.
Thanks and I'm definitely excited for the end of Jan when this is due out 🙂
58:05: Yep, that's a close-enough summary of Z fighting... and yeah, the name is because in screen-space, the Z axis is the depth, and that's the axis where the inaccuracies of floating point math cause the renderer to not be able to figure out reliably which is closer.
I laughed so hard that I hurt my back when you hit that first red barrel - well done, Splitsie, well done... I will admit to finding those types of game deaths as the most entertaining - you get the 'ow' then a 'what' and then something like an 'oh...' but all it really sets you back is a few minutes to get your stuff back. Wouldn't be quite so fun if you'd actually lost stuff for it.
Just a thought for Factorio and Satisfactory - with them, you have a goal set up for you, (build X of something and do Y with it). There's no way to make your own story or role play around it. Perhaps a Survival/RPG/Base Builder with a 'factory' side game would be more interesting... Anyone know of one?
Stationeers fits that bill, although calling it an RPG might be a stretch.
Hydroneer isn't a survival game, from memory, but leans into the factory/automation building game play.
Since you're here on Splitsie's "alternative" channel, I'm assuming you're familiar with Splitsie's main channel and probably have seen the Stationeers series, there.
- What you may not be familiar with in Stationeers is that from the early mid-game, the focus is typically on process automation, which can include food production. In the mid to late game, you can buy/sell foodstuffs, seeds and materials with traders ... provided you build the infrastructure to contact traders and a place for them to land!
If you want to know a way around the 8h time limit follow this plan. Do everything you can in the first 8h. Remove/ collect things you want to keep and keep them on your Charicture. Dismantle any weapons you don't want to keep. keep/ collect hard to get stuff. Exit out and Delete your save file on the game's save entry page. Resave a new game and log back in. You will be logged back in with the first charicture you created and you get an additional 8h.The only thing that gets deleted are the starting and anything built. Your level and progress in building plans will still be there. Using this you can look at more of the game's stuff within the range of the demo ring/ box or what they set for the demo.
Fortunately I'm more interested in the building side of things so won't need to worry about doing that, but for those looking at poking around the story/progression side that's quite handy :)
Well, potentially this could be a Valhelm-esque game with a pace that suits me better. Thanks for showing us that playthrough, Splitsie :)
The floating voxels when you place building blocks underneath is slightly disturbing, but may get patched out.
-> Re: Factorio / Satisfactory - You and I seem to be in a similar boat regarding Satisfactory. Stationeers - when I deigned to look past the bobble-head avatars - "grabbed" me whereas Satisfactory did not. Perhaps it is because progression in Factorio / Satisfactory is tied to quite specific production quotas, so the game play and problem solving in practice, ends up being less open-ended than other games, like Spengies, Stationeers, Icarus, Empyrion, Valheim, etc.?
Yeah, the 'get this number of X thing' style of progression is certainly a turn off for me, but there's also the level of obfuscation of the spreadsheet.
In games like Space Engineers and Stationeers you can certainly derive all the exact numbers for things, but the number of variables you'd have to deal with in real time mean that it's often just as productive to have a 'feel' for what's about right which is more my style.
In Satisfactory the exact formulae needed for perfect production is obvious to a point that I quickly forget I'm playing a game and feel like I'm solving a mathematics problem. Which is fun for some, but usually a means to an end for me and not fun in itself.
@@Flipsie Yes, that's a good way of putting it: Building to address a goal and arriving at a 'good enough' solution by applying general principles.
Good observation about "obfuscation of the spreadsheet"
Interestingly enough, it seems that the phase change update to Stationeers was enough to cause a notable amount of players to remark, "this is too much like doing work!" -> Different strokes for different folks, I guess!
The fireplace aligned to grid, but didn't snap, so you could fix it...
Forget about "Winter is coming" or "The mountain troll king's army approaches." There is building afoot!
I really like how the cottage cuts into the terrain and the varying height of the doors. It feels a lot more like a real building than beginner structures usually do. I'm also too excited about the prospect of a basement. This is going to challenge my allergy to early access games, I can tell.
Thanks, that was exactly what I was going for, something that conformed to the terrain around it rather than the other way around :)
The team making Enshrouded are the team behind Portal Knights...which imo. Is a great game!
I hope they'll make the trees falling just like Valheim. It really adds something to the game, a proper feeling of physics.
Valheim really did nail making tree chopping satisfying
1:43:00 Someone tell this man about oven stones, they are great for breads and pizza. Cooks it in a regular oven exactly how they are supposed to cook. Gets you about 80% of the way to a full on pizza oven!
Wholeheartedly disagree, oven stones never work anywhere near as well as other methods because unless you've got a fancy oven, you can't get the stone hot enough in the first place
This is from my own experience of a few different ones in a few different ovens
AoC npcs and world exploring with a finer building system? Yes please!
I am so looking forward to this game. I should make some projects from it.
Just a little over a week before their launch :)
Speaking of building and Z-fighting, something like the method used in Tiny Glade would be really cool.
I'm really hopeful that we'll see some more things like that make it into larger games, it always looks so satisfying when fluid building like that is on display
So excited this game releases in 2 weeks!
Been waiting for well over a year.. and after this demo been chomping at the bit!
Enjoy your video! Love building too. Got 1700 hours in valheim. Hope this game can keep me busy!
If only procedural generation would have been epic
I'm excited to get back into it too, I'll be jumping in as soon as I can 🙂
First map I ever made for Unreal Tournament was a small box with 8 spawns, and the chainsaw only setting XD
This game is pretty RAD....right up my alley.
Where can i buy this ?
And, why not get rock from your "Basement" ?
You dig out and get a bigger basement and you get building materials......
Two birds, one "stone" 😅
Thanks for the upload buddy. Very VERY cool game.
Take care,
~Jonny5🥁
It's currently just a demo as part of Steam Next Fest, I think it's hoping to release later this year into early access - when it does you can be assured I'll be playing more :)
A genuine survival game with a actual story and environmental mechanics to go along with it. Plus it’ll be co op. If this also ends up with entertaining npc’s. Will have to assume witchcraft has taken place…!
lol Not to mention some QoL features in it BEFORE release? Proper magic :P
Well there once upon a time was EverQest Next with allround voxel manipulation freestyle but that went the way od the dodo fast when it became a money sink.
A possible solution to Z fighting is just prioritzing the textures on the block placed last.
Or create a system where only certian blocks can intersect, and only in certian ways- which then lets you create textures for those intersections.
Prioritization doesn't really work, unfortunately. The issue isn't usually that the engine sees both surfaces at _exactly_ the same place, the issue is that floating points are an inexact form of representation. There's always round-off errors somewhere in there (they've literally crashed _rockets_ due to floating point round-off errors). Infinitesimally small changes in the camera position can change which of the two surfaces the round-off has as being "in front".
One of the more common solutions is to set a threshold where, if two surfaces have less than some distance A between them, the render "bumps" each one by a short distance along the Z axis, relatively arbitrarily but consistently (and without actually moving the surface, just moving it for that rendering frame). That's where your priority system can come in.
The small block building is similar to StoneHearth's block by block style construction when free building.
That's true, I was so sad when it got abandoned. I really enjoyed that game
I'm gonna create the coziest of hobbit holes when this game comes out lol
I would give my life for Charlie and I don't even know what she looks like.
The description of charcoal irks me a bit since to make it you have to deprive the wood of oxygen otherwise it just burns😅
I was mildly amused at the joy that was shown when voxel deformation was discovered.
The reason Z-fighting has that name is because it involves the Z axis from the prospective of the player's camera. Both surfaces are in the same place the same distance from the camera, and it's non-deterministic which surface gets rendered.
Hopefully the developer is scouting these sorts of videos, trying to see what people out there are doing with the demo.
Yep, hopefully this was seen as a chance to get some early feedback and ideas :)
Its been a while since I last visited your Page but love this game. Tony in Essex
It seems cool but I really can't get over how the character looks like a short manlet.
If they just shrunk the head a little nothing else would even need to change.
This game looks really fun. Unfortunately, it won't load on my system so all I can do is watch 😢 for the moment. Still, I can't wait for when it gets released. You will be draggging Capac into it, right?
Speaking of Capac, he sounded super rough. I hope he's okay. Tell him to rest up and get better soon for me, please... Oh, and to post his painting streams as well...
I think the Capac Painting Stream request is becoming a tradition... Mind if I join in? (Sorry, Splitsie, I know this isn't fair to you.)
Please do join in, the more the merrier... And just remember, Splitsie, #blame Capac 😊
He's already starting to feel better, his voice sounded pretty much normal during our recording last night 🙂
You really should revisit Satisfactory, once they allowed clipping of building parts it really opened up the game for some amazing aesthetic designs. Also with the new lighting options and textures there is so much more to making an amazing looking factory. To me the functionality is a distant second to making a beautiful design. Your dislike really seems to be based on a much older version of the game. Anyway, my 2 cents, cheers!
I've played it a couple of times, once when it first came out and that's actually when I had the most fun. Capac and I went off exploring and enjoyed doing that part of the game, then ran into the building system and I quickly lost interest. I returned maybe 9 months later and bounced off it after a single session. Satisfactory is just one of those games (like NMS) that's arguably not a bad game, it's just not a game for me :)
Fun game. Looks right up the 3-4 pips co-op. Will have fun watching you die many, many times in this :)
AWESOME GAME !!!!!
I'm really looking forward to when it comes out properly so I can get fully stuck into the builds :)
Although I appreciate you took the time to explore properly the building menu (others didn't), I have to admit I fell asleep in the duration.
Give a streamer a tiny voxel cube and he will make a 3-hour video! How about next time you start with bigger pieces and subtract what you don't need with your little cube? 😜
To do that I'd need to know what I wanted in the first place 😜

ok interesting
I've tried to run this on Linux but it crashes the amdgpu driver, which in turn kills x11/xorg.
On the other hand, have you tried "The Front" ? It looks like it does have some building too.
Being locked into a grid is very dissapointing, I was hoping for this to be better than valhiem and not just diffrent.
This game fr gives off Valheim vibes
Yep, and thankfully it's in a good way :)
I can see the Valheim inspirations, but the visual style reminds me more of Breath of the Wild. Can't say it's a bad mix though, especially if similar mechanics (physics, stamina) are also included :)
I hope there is more than just one biome. So far not seeing a variety. Also always battling the same enemies is annoying as well.
The Building mechanics are amazing! I would go buy it just to be creative. Other than that reason so far looks boring.
For me these games are always about the building, hopefully the other stuff is fun enough to keep me entertained while collecting the stuff for more building 😂
Conan Exiles is absolutely broken right now. Don't even bother. I could list 30 bugs off the top of my head. Literally.
Rizz game.
Playing “ optimal “ feels robotic in my opinion
Yeah, that's fair I think
I cant believe they really want you to build with your avatar camera. Its so stupidly annoying... There is this game called empyrion which gives you a freelook flying cam for bulding, why nobody is adapting it?
Empyrion's camera works because of the setting, space engineers' jetpack works in that setting too. I suspect a lot of people would be quite negative about a flying drone for building being included in a game that has an ancient fantasy setting despite the usability benefits it might have
Then adapt it to this fantasy setting and make it a bird/crow/wisp (Unlockable trou Hunter/Alchemist)@@Flipsie
I clicked 1:45:00 and you were still naked... 😅
The building really did distract me :P
no defensive pve ..👎
Looks way too generic. More surviving and building...
I wonder if they'll have something with the extra flame born that you bring back to your settlement that'll end up making it feel more unique down the line. I'm enjoying it enough to find out though, as the building system is similar to what I wish I could do in minecraft (smaller cubes) :P
