I think it's better than the Roland SPD-SX. The build quality is better, I haven't had any issues with crosstalk with the 9 pads on the unit. I am using some external pads and triggers attached to the snare and bass and fine tuning those. I don't see smashing the LCD, I've been creating new kits and trying new patterns and missing the pads but not hitting the LCD screen. The Alesis has more memory, 32G and has more internal sounds than the Roland. The Roland has 200 something sounds and the Alesis has 7000. You can also create loops with it. And what I played wasn't a cover. I created all the samples in Garageband except the moog siren which I downloaded from Noiiz.com
