For the past two decades the general consensus has been that a virgin kick sounds better than a non-virgin kick. This narrative has been pushed, reiterated, and accepted, for the most part, as an undeniable truth. Is this actually fact or is it hype? In this video I explore tonal quality differences in the two shell configurations and whether or not it is worth giving up some of the many benefits a non-virgin kick drum shell has to offer.
These benefits might include perfect tom placement every time, easier positioning of cymbal stands without having to deal with tom placement, being able to choose lighter cymbal stands, less tom and stand wobble while playing, kick drum stays in place from the weight of the tom/toms and tom stand.
In this video, I demonstrate how each kick drum compares with out toms and with toms. Does having a non-virgin kick drum with the tom mount going through the shell constrict shell resonation? I think you'll find the answer to be revealing, informative, and a game changer for those who might be on the fence with their next choice of tom mounting configurations, with their next purchase, or customization of their existing kit.
Great video! However, that virgin kick has a subtly different resonance. It might just be that they’re two different drums, but it does sound better. There’s more fundamental tone and fullness to my ear. YMMV, and yes, it is probably subtle enough that most people will never tell the difference. And your points about setup are well stated. There's definitely a difference. Is it enough for most players to choose one over the other? Prolly not. But there is an obvious difference in resonance.

Toms mounted on the bass drum 100%, 30-45 minutes from load in to sound man putting mics on the kit (5 drums, 3 cymbals, and hats).

Bro I died when he caught on to his hand movements lol loved the video... Wasn't what I was looking for but it was entertaining. I'm having the problem where I've owned a virgin bass so I'm use to putting my rack toms on the cymbal stands. But now I have a studioease (smaller rack toms) same size bass... So now I'm rocking a 10x7 and a 12x8 and my two top cymbals at 18in crash and a 20in crash on the 12x8 tom... I usually keep my cymbals low but with this kit I feel like I have to keep the cymbals higher up otherwise they cover my toms some if set to low... Maybe it's time to switch up my cymbals?

They both sound good, but the virgin kick is definitely lower in fundamental pitch. FWIW, I use a 20" virgin kick on a riser and it produces more than enough depth and oomf for any style.
It doesnt matter. If that was the case nobody would port their head. It makes zero difference. Whose really wanting a tom to ring out for 4 seconds. Thats when ppl start to complain that their drums sre too ringy
