Cage is a glamorous urban fighter, not an ancient-future hybrid wizard like Raiden. Yes, many of those fighters are like at least thousand years old and Cage doesn’t really like the whole mess with it. Cage wants a flashy hotel with a Lamborghini parked outside, not this dirty crap in Outworld. Understand Cage, please.

even when i saw this in the theater when it came out (i know, i'm old), i could tell it was low budget. me and my friends liked it though because it had personality and good fighting for the most part.. and it really was the first movie based on a game that even tried to pay some kind of respect to the actual game.

It was one of the few best movies based on a video game I ever watched while Mortal Kombat: Annihilation on the other hand, totally blows! That movie on the other hand, reeked. Too bad the bad box office numbers didn't warrant the producers to make a part three and its been in purgatory ever since and partially, I don't them blame them for feeling this way.
It wasnt low budget at all, Christopher Lambert was a big name back in the early '90s, and the CGi was groundbreaking by the time...I mean, it look better than the CGi in The Matrix, released 4 years later.

Johnny brings up a good point, but Raiden should have first said in HIS line "There IS a roadblock to that, Johnny. It's not ALWAYS like in fantasy movies."
Its a huge curtain backdrop with lights imbedded and the smoke is supposed to mask this illusion but unfortunately it is quite apparent they are in a studio if you look closely. I think they really could have done more to sell this scene as being on a boat by adding the sound of water/waves, creaky boat sounds and a slow rocking up and down motion to the camera. It's all too static and it gives the game away.

He's holding his arms up just like Shang Tsung and is right behind him. I think it's Shang Tsungs true form... almost like if crossing into the realm of the island somehow reveals his true form.
Loved this movie as a kid and still do as an adult. The graphics for this day and age are bad and the acting is a little off but it was great for the time period it came out in, hence the reboot released recently. I watch this one over and over again every once in a while.

I think, according to the lore, Mortal Kombat was originally an honorable contest between warriors from different realms and the rules were upheld by the Order of Light. Then Goro killed the Great Kung Lao and Shang Tsung became the overseer of the tournament and corrupted it into the violent bloodsport it is now.

It's such a pity that the SCARY MOVIE franchise didn't start a little earlier. They could have spoofed this movie so easily. It's basically spoofing itself already.
