I have this Pickup installed in my guitar for almost 1 year now, its a great Pickup never got a sound that amazing from any other pickup
this pickup with the boost is badass.i have one installed in my alexi 600.
I just bought this set, EMG. It's cool. I haven't even installed it yet, but it's cool.
It's got a fucking CoB armband packed in, so it's cool.
and that's exactly how I reacted to it when I got it, 10 years ago as well.
I still have that CoB EMG armband but it's so worn off I just keep it bc nostalgia. The pickup still slaps.
The boost on them is actually a preamp.´In emg 81, there is a preamp inside the pickup. Here, it´s at the volyme control. But it even a better control. So you can actually switch between passive and (even a better verison of) active.

Yes they are passive pickups, don't let anybody tell you otherwise. The pickup does come with an active boost which you can turn on/off with a push/pull pot, but the pickup is passive.

Well, if you read the description of these, you see that they are passive but have a boost. This is a developed boost of the preamp in every in active emg (like the 81). So if you put this on, you basically switch to active, only this preamp is even better. Highly reccomended!

i just installed it on my guitar and i must say its fucking amazing. better than any other pickup that i had (emg81, blackout...)
@guitarshreder91 passive, with an active circuit boost/eq which makes the pickup sound whatever you like in every way (mid, bass, highs, and gain)

@lasik124 The pickup is passive but the preamp and gain boost is active. It requires a 9v battery
@ex6arch6angel6 I'm pretty sure they sound fairly different. For one thing his pickup is passive. It's an EMG-HZ as opposed to the active 81. It has an EQ whereas the tonal option on an 81 can only really be varied depending on the guitar you use, or the battery.

wow, man, you helped me a lot! i bought on e-bay a EMG ALX HZ with ABQ boost and today it arrived to my house. i immediately put it on my alexi 600 and it works fucking great! thank you very much =D
I got my ESP alexi 600 model signed by the whole band in a store signing here in australia! it was weird, i got there an hour and a half early to be first or at least close to first in line. the line was about 20 people deep! the guy in front of me was a guitar player as well and had one of mick thompsons signature models. he was a really nice guy. but the guy behind me was literally about to kill someone! finally, we got to see them! and i could barely speak! damn...
That pickup is a beast. Even better than the active ones. Just my opinion :)
I have HZ:s on my guitar and everybody on forums etc says that they suck, but I suppose they are wrong because Alexi's sound is awesome!

@DraXgonProductions oops. i ment to say he used EMGs up until Blooddrunk where he used blackouts then went back to EMGs because he didnt like the tone after awhile.
HAVEN´T YOU LISTENED TO WHAT I SAID?! I wasn´t sayin´ that you can switch from passive pups to active ones. But the boost is a solid state preamp, just like in EMG 81s, only it´s not in the pickup. It´s under the volume knob. So what i´m sayin is that you cant switch this pup to active, but you get the same signal out from your guitar as when you have active pups.

Floyd Spacing, it makes sense. Just make sure you have space for the electronics, i'm not sure how the EQ will fit. In the pic in my catolog it looks like the same size knob as other EMG's, But i would take it to a Music shop, just to double check.
@shadowgod91 so when u bought warrior did it have active pickups, with the battery space in it. if not, how did u put everything in it if it doesnt have extra space.

Unfortunately, the LTD Alexi 600 doesn't come with the the Alexi Laiho EMG Signature Set. If you are considering getting the same configuration as Laiho, you'll have to buy things seperately. Orelse, you can try the Edwards version of the Alexi Laiho Signature Guitar (which is a little bit more affordable than the ESP version, yet still made in Japan) which comes equipped with the MM04 preamp (which includes the same 3 band EQ as his EMG signature set) that Laiho actually uses on stage.
Actually I don't like EMG pickups, but this one interested me. My friend has it, and he tells me that booster is a very cool feature of this set. Without it it sounds like PAF-like pickup with low output and good cleans (EMG HZ-H2), but booster changes all the things dramatically and it's level can change the sound as you like. I think it's very cool, that's why I'm looking forward to trying it :)
Can't wait til I can get me one of these. Sounds amazing, hopefully it'll blow the stock pickup on my Alexi-200 out of the water.
@FandomUnited ok. but, how do i connect it. like where do u put all the cords and stuff. like how is the pream or battery connected to the pickup.

@shadowgod91 i got a jackson js30rr do i need to make some space on the back of the guitar to get the pickup working( i know that actives need a battery) but this is a passive, but it has somekinda preamp and a gain boost thing. so can i just install it, or do i have to make room for all the other buttons and stuff on the back. hope u know what i mean.
these pickups are AWESOME!!! I got and installed these about 2 days ago in my Jackson rr24 :D Very unique the different tones you can achieve wit h the EQ. Tone is flat when it's off though lol... but who would want it off anyways???
@joey1364 in zakk wylde signature there are 2 pickups... thats why it costs double
is this pickup good ? I'm buying a 95 Jackson RR1 and the guy installed some EMG-HZ in it so i thought i would install the EMG Afterburner but than maybe the EMG ALX is a better idea ? Plus that you can adjust the "sound" of it to fit your own preferences?
Btw i don't care about clean tone or neck pickup , i don't use it anyway.
hey, does it work if i have another pickup on my guitar? or would i have to loose the neck pickup. cuz i's like to get this, since everyone says, there's no soldering, but if it wont work with another pickup, then i think i should just get the afterburner even though it requires soldering. but if i do get it, it won't be for a while
first time i saw Alexi with no eyeliner, and first video i saw with him not swearing. HE IS MY IDOL
@kristofreynders True, didn't think about the booster. Funny thing is though, I put a pair of EMGs into my Schecter Omen 7 and all I'm running it through is a little Line 6 Spider IV 15 and it sounds almost the same as Alexi does here. Only problem is that it probably won't sound the same at high volumes. Oh well.
i have a question, does the ESP alexi 600 guitar come already with this pickup and gain boost with EQ,(the 3 band EQ), because im looking forward to buy the guitar alexi has, but I dont know if it comes with the EQ. so im in a deep concern if buying the guitar+ the pickup set, or the guitar alexi 600 alone. :D hope you answer please:D
Its not really a 3 band EQ. It has 3 small dip switches that you can turn on or off. Turning different combinations on or off cuts certain frequencies from the signal leaving the preamp. If you look up the installation manual for this set it shows the combinations and what they do. It's an old design Jackson made in the 80s that he used and EMG recreated it somewhat when his Jacksons were stolen.
@2010COBHC im kinda new to this, but can two pickups(neck and bridge) be controlled by one gain booster?

The Thing is a movie. They sound is so monsterous that he made a nice reference to it.
i have had a not so great experience with the EMG HZ series for death metal and heavy stuff
So is this set any better? and does the ABQ make much of a difference?
@Zhaggysfaction i dont follow alexi's pickups so the last time i checked what pickups he was using..they were blackouts my mistake

That's the volume pot yes,
It's a push pull pot, so when it's pressed down the gain boost will be active and when it's pulled up the gain boost will be in active.
I don't really recommend this pack to be honest, the idea of buying a passive pup to have it run into an active gain boost all the time seems a bit silly and pointless.
@DH31701 pull to turn off, adjust EQ with the 3 dip switches(bands) :D

I was able to shake Alexi's hand 8 days ago. Right after I shook his hand, I immediately thought that this guy can actually WALK ON WATER.

Does he still use those live? and did he use emg on any of bodoms album? He uses sd blackouts nowadays bud idk is it just in studio or live also.
CHEERS TO GUYS THAT ACTUALLY REPLIED TO ME!!! - i love the guitar but know little on mechanics....looked on the custom guitar site RAN guitars and they have like every pickup option avilable. As much as i like alexis tone...it sometimes sounds a tad flat as oppose to say... crunchy Lamb of god like tone..
@chasejohanson12 Well the main reason u dont wanna mix the 2 is because of volume differences. The active is louder and the passive is not. Active pickups arent really high output like most think there just really loud. But it's not really set in stone so if you want try it out =0) good luck

@ex6arch6angel6 well... what's the guitar gonna be made of? mahogany, alder, maple? What is it based on? like... strat, les paul, tele, explorer. I mean unless you want this laiho's sound you'd usually be best off with the 81 and 85/ 60/ 89 combo.

As far as I know, volume and tone knobs are just potentiometers and are no different from each other. I guess it's just how they're wired.

I don't think he uses Blackouts. He did use them for a very brief time couple years back but since then he's used EMG's exclusively. Where did you find this information that he uses Blackouts NOW?
