RACER: 1963 Lotus 27 FJ Race Visor Cam with Danny Baker

  • One of the smallest and least powerful cars at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion turns out to be the most amazing visor cam ride as Danny Baker throttles all 880 pounds and 1.1 liters of his 1963 Lotus 27 Formula Junior while chasing the polesitter. And don't mind his rock-spewing spin at the Corkscrew, captured in full HD, before resuming the chase...

      Cause its just him, he is driving his own line. Not trying to tighten up the line of the guy in front. All those small adjustments disappeared and he let that lotus scream. My heart dropped when he spun but he acted like it never even happened. Wicked video.

    It's nice to see the POVs of these vintage cars in today's time. Let's you see what those who raced them before did in a more connected way. Often times I have to remind myself when watching racing from decades past, that I'm just watching through an old camera lens that doesn't show how "real" it actually is... Natural colors, etc. Just like the old black and white war footage... No, it wasn't black and white back then... It was just as it is today - and we're only sperated from those of past by time.
    Anyway, enough of that ha

    I did thousands of laps on GPL and after watching this never realized how similar the cars’ handling really is on those thin hard tires!! Knife edge balance the entire time, the car feels like it’s dancing and you really have to balance wheel and throttle to keep the car from flying off. When you spun I honestly feared the worst. Great job getting back on and brushing it off like nothing happened. Now where’s my copy of “Grand Prix”....

I have never been in USA but driven all types of simulators in that track and I love it, It seems extraordinary from inside the real deal....I can imagine the feeling pressing the accelerator when balancing the steering wheel on the exit of the turns...I'm very happy to see that the drivers in the video where driving fast and something for last: RESPECT the CORKSCREW!!! ;)

  • @bebopdelux10

    I did not realise till watching this how the driver has to almost prepare the car before a bend. To me it appeared as though the driver (who is superb by the way) gave the car a little twitch - if one can call to that - first in the direction of the bend and then quickly in the opposite direction. I watch current F1 but in truth I much prefer 70's/80's F1, for you had some technology but still a lot of driver input. That's not to say however that current F1 cars are easier to drive, but there is just something about foot clutch and gear change and preparing the car with a little bit of drift thrown in that excites me; aka Ronnie Peterson during the 74 British Grand Prix (which can be found on UA-cam) for example.

    So I'm guessing his mistake @4:45 is that because he was in the air stream of the car in front, that caused him to enter the top of the hill faster than other laps; he didn't anticipate this increase in speed in time which caused him to brake later as can be seen using the place markers to the right. And with these kind of cars, (mid-engine and no downforce it seems) it's best to try and slow the car down at some point just before reaching the top of the hill or else the balance of the car will easily get upset as soon as the hill starts to level off. Maybe someone can come up with a better theory.
    He could also have realized he was going too fast too late and said "oh shit" and hit the brakes a bit too hard.

    • @Jonw8222
      @Jonw8222 4 роки тому +1

      In my opinion, he simply locked up the rears under heavy braking (over driving) because he was trying to maintain the pressure on the car infront after having blown a few "small" chances . The thing with that section of the track is that the car gets light at the top of the hill (and the bumps).. and it's also braking slightly into a turn (not a straight line like in turn 1) which these cars don't handle very well due to extremely low downforce. It's an issue every single lap, but in my opinion he was pushing too hard and that part of the track is really bad for that. I agree that it's better to balance the car slightly first, and then apply heavy brakes after it's stable in corners like this.

    • @kc5402
      @kc5402 2 роки тому +1

      The spin was probably not directly related to the brake bias setting. There's a slight crest on the approach to the Corkscrew, so he was probably braking a little too heavily as the car went light, and locked up the rear wheels. It's true that you could shift the brake bias forward to help guard against that happening, but then you would compromise your braking for almost every other corner on the lap. It's best just to give the Corkscrew a little more respect. ;-)

      No, I think that Lotus never built their own engines when it was a racing team. Wikipedia says the engine was made by cosworth

    I'm a '60s kid and think the F1 cars of that time, just a monocoque with wheels, an engine, fuel tanks and barely any bodywork to speak of, were the ultimate test of driver ability. They were good looking too.

      Ahahahah that wobbling. As far as I know, narrow tires offer more precision and direction while entering a corner, but those high tire shoulders were not helping with stability...
