  • In today's video I show you 3 different over-the-counter (OTC) eye drops that I would NOT recommend for treating dry eye disease. I also review the reasons that I do not recommend those drops.
If you want to know which over-the-counter eye drops I do recommend, I've listed the links to some of the eye drops that I DO recommend below.
This is NOT a sponsored video, the eye drops that I review in this video are based on my own clinical experience treating dry eye disease, as well as in-depth research about the science behind the ingredients in artificial tears.

Hey Doc, I have been using Soframycin antibacterial eye drops 3 times a day for 2 years now, which contains BAK. I was pretty shocked to hear that long-term BAK exposure is damaging to the eye. I stopped using the soframycin drops a month ago and switched to optimel manuka honey drops, which are BAK free but also contain benzoic acid as a preservative.
What damage may I have done to my eyes with the BAK, can I heal from it, and is the optimel manuka honey drops a good alternative even with the benzoic acid? Thank you in advance. This video may have saved my eyes.

You are so professional, I had an accident about 2 months ago, I was on my bicycle and a tree branch hit my eye. No blood, thought nothing of it, felt like something was stuck in my eye. A week later when not getting better I got worried, so went to get it checked. The doctor put something in my eye and did a test with microscope, said there was nothing in there...now a few weeks later, this thing is coming back ;( I think it's a recurring corneal erosion. Will this ever heal, I'm really worried and the doctors over here in Thailand are mostly clueless..

I watched your other video recently and have concluded that maybe the eye drops I've been using (Refresh plus and Systane) are causing it, (maybe an allergy to the preservative in these) so I've switched to the Refresh Digital PF. I'd never use over the counter eye drops. The eye is too dear to me and it is by far the most complicated organ in our body. I used prescription eye drops: durezol and prednisolone (after surgical treatment). During pandemic a shortage of eye dropps occured. Anyways, I consulted with a dry eye specialist by the referrence from my ophthalmologist. The reason of my eye driness in big part is the preservative. I used some eye drops without a preservative. But any such eye drop is weaker than durezol. I was prescribed durezol as one of the very limited options to raise eye pressure. After consultation with my ophthalmologist I decided to stop using any eyedrops because they keep drying my eye (durezol is still not avail in my local pharmacy). Doc, is it really so hard to raise eye pressure artificially if naturally it doesn't? I still have my eye filled with silicon oil until the pressure restores.

I use Systane Balance as recommended by an optometrist and okayed by my ophthalmologist. It does not contain the most toxic chemicals you mentioned. I don’t use it very often but seems to be effective when I do. I tend to have watery eyes more than dry eyes. The one significant issue I experience is extreme itching of either eye but mostly the left eye. It seems to start itching suddenly and rubbing is not quickly effective. I sometimes rinse the eyes with cool water which helps. It only lasts a minute or so. Allergies or environmental problems? Keep up the good work!

I just got my first Bausch and Lomb "Bio True" and the packaging claims no preservatives. I of course didn't believe it and went over the ingredients using my handy cheap magnifying glass and didn't see BAK listed.

I don't have any experience with it, so I don't specifically recommend it. The ingredients listed for the drop seem acceptable.

I discovered Retaine MGD. it's the only one that really relieves the dry stinging in my left eye without having to put in drops every hour. I use it only a few times a day.
My eye doctor also prescribed Restasis but it's not effective by itself on my pesky left eye.

I live in Canada and use HYLO. Expensive but great. The only eye drop that will give you 1 drop at a time instead of drowning your eye and face.

I use blink is that a bad one? After so many years of using it because my ophthalmologist told me to
an allergist/ immunologist told me I was allergic to glycol, hexyl and ethanol so now I’m reading labels on everything I use and take and blink has 400 0.25% glycol .
I have to mention that I have autoimmune immune disease and that’s why I saw the allergist, hair loss, broken bleeding skin, shedding skin , burning rash and scabs on scalp. 😢

Thank you for the video. My current eye drops contain polyvinyl alcohol. Is the only issue with polyvinyl alcohol that it is less effective than the newer alternatives? If so, could you please expand on how much less effective it is and in what ways? Thank you.

I grew up being told propelyne glycol was really nasty. That ingredient is in Systane preservatives free. It bothers me using it.

Thanks. My eye doctor just recommended that I start using eye drops and I bought the WalMart brand for dry eyes. I was just about to start when you advised to avoid drops with BAK so I looked at the lable and there it was! I trashed the full bottle of drops and will go to the store tomorrow and get the Optase or some other preservative free drop.

I just bought otc Eye Mo moist eye drop hoping it can sooth my dry tired eyes. After 1 drop on each eye, then I saw this video on youtube. I checked back on the eye drop which I just bought, and it contains BAK. Now I am throwing 5 dollors into the trash :(

Years ago my manager told me to get red-eye drops as I was always rubbing my eyes (turned out the eyelash whatever were not functioning well AND I think my dirty hands infected my lids a bit). I got red eye drops on the way home and 2 hours after I put them in my eyes looked like they were melting and full of blood - terrifying. Went to emergency and they just parked me for 12 hours and then said go home as there were too busy (endless ambulances coming in). By then it was clearing up .. at least not terrify gooey stuff dripping down. Anyway, I have been using (maybe twice a week now) Clear Eye (red label), it only has .. tough to read "napha... choride.. 0.012%. Figured it was mild.
