Many years ago when I was a youngun' fresh out of law school I did public defense to really learn how to practice law (because for all the money I spent at law school it really just taught me some fancy words and theories, how to read and research and write briefs - then gave me the opportunity to spend more money to pass the bar and obtain a license to really learn). Anyhow, for as uncomfortable as a competency hearing is, it is something many attorneys and judges deal with almost daily - and it is a central part of our system of justice. If you aren't able to understand the charges, understand that what you did was wrong, or are unable to assist in your defense, there are due process concerns that come into play. I appreciate you sharing not just the entertaining bits but sometimes the more serious and less portrayed parts of what really happens in court.

And also the people out in society that have to deal with them on the streets…like I said sad and sometimes this is the best place for them and their safety.

Speaking of competency hearings… I remember a couple times when I was in court, the police had straight up arrested a mentally handicapped person. It was for something stupid like they thought he was stealing or they asked him something and he wouldn’t comply. But it was so obvious the guy had the mind of like a 4 year old. He wound up having a competency hearing and was determined not to be competent. It was just really sad tbh. The other time was the same thing. Someone with Down syndrome literally stole like a piece of fruit from a grocery store or something. It was so ridiculously petty I can’t believe they’re actually charging these people.

I fully believe that our courts and prisons and everything needs a huge overhaul, but it’s kind of like where is the line at though. A ton of inmates have mental health problems and being in prison exacerbates it so if you have all these people together in one spot with all these health problems, it just doesn’t turn out great. And then, on the other hand, you have all these non-violent offenders. I don’t know it all just needs to change and I’m not sure how we can go about it.

Miss Lucky sure looks like she’s up for the role of a serious schizophrenic. I am a retired nurse and have seen this more times than I care to remember while on medication they can be competent to semi-competent and without any medication there is no hope for competency, I also know because my first husband was diagnosed with schizophrenia. May he rest in peace

Well, it could be that, however I’m gonna guess it’s the non stop huffing of chemicals….in her other appearances she appears lost, defeated, and slightly narcissistic, albeit resigned…

i still dont understand how someone can be in custody but miss a court date. computers have been around for some time now. when cops run people for warrants at the side of the road, it runs through the system. so why the F does the same system not have court dates in it? as soon as a court date is assigned the system should notify the location they are in custody. as they are the responsibility of the jail, prison, or asylum they are in are going to need such notification to get them to court. if i am in prison, how do i break out to get to court? that would be a charge. if they F up and dont get me access, i dont have the choice to override them. i am in their custody. it should come up on their calendar a list of those they control, what court they need to get to, or connect to, and at what time. all of this can be automatically done by computer since the 80's.

At first I thought White Pigeon was a peculiar name for a type of Ordinance.
Then soon after learned it was the name of a town. Commenting from Australia. So I had not heard of that town.
