Pretty sure this was the first race ever shown of Daytona 500 in Australia. I remember taping this on VHS as a kid. I wore the tape out rewatching this over and over. I literally must have watched it from start to finnish about 200 times, almost knew all the commentary off by heart. I was so addicted to American super speedway racing, there was nothing like it in Australia, largest oval we had was a Charlotte clone. Rewatching this was a great trip down memory lane for me, thanks for sharing.
This is true. NASCAR themselves have the masters of the broadcasts. I'm just waiting for them to upload every single Daytona 500 they've covered since 1979, so that we may bask in the glory of what NASCAR once was.
As cranky as Senior was reputed to be, I always admired the way he stood in front of the microphones and answered the questions after even the most gut-wrenching losses.
One of the best moments of the “Dale & Dale Show” call by Ned was actually after Dale won. You hear Ned in the commentary booth as he’s being congratulated say “Didn’t I teach him to drive that race car!!” The ultimate of any proud father, the moment when you realize your child accomplishes something great & realize that you had a huge part of it as a successful father that was a huge integral part to do with that accomplishment.
Fun Fact; the next week at Rockingham, Ned apologized to Dale Sr. for playing favorites, and Dale Sr. pretty much said " I would've done the same thing if my son had a shot at winning the 500.".
@@Pikashockdragon True, not a lot of people realize that. Ned talked about that experience on live tv the next week at Rockingham after Dale’s death. He also later said that a few year’s later that he also told Ned he would not speak to him or do an interview with him if he continued to feel guilty in any way. That interaction & what Dale Sr. told Ned ironically showed itself during the 1996 500 where during the last laps as Dale & Dale were racing for the win, you can here in Ned’s call absolutely no hesitation in cheering on his son while racing Sr. for his 2nd Daytona win. Dale Jarrett later said that Sr. was the first to congratulate him by inviting him, his wife, his mom & dad (Ned) to his house for dinner that week following the 500. Dale Sr., Dale & Ned Jarrett, how lucky can you be to have 3 such class acts and legends of the sport involved in 2 of the biggest moments in the history of the Daytona 500.
Wow deadset man, I remember I was sick at home still in High school at the time and watch this race live on TV. I'm from Australia. To me this was when Nascar was at its best.. thanks for the upload mate!
As a lifelong Dale Jarrett fan; it’s great to watch dad call his son’s first 500 win!! Thanks for uploading!!! Now let’s get to it: hey, NASCAR, upload the 2005 UAW-Ford 500 at Talladega. DJ’s last Cup win deserves to be remembered.
One of the greatest moments in my NASCAR fandom. I have been a fan since 1989. We always had Daytona 500 parties at my aunt's house. My uncle has been a NASCAR fan for years before that. I was hooked after the 1988 season. I love this sport. I still love this sport after all these years. To hear Ned Jarrett call his sons Daytona 500 win was classic. It was a great moment. Damn I miss those parties we used to have.
1993 1. Walker Texas Ranger, Diagnosis: Murder, The Nanny, Late Show with David Letterman, and Good Advice debuted on CBS. 2. Bill Nye the Science Guy, Late Night with Conan O'Brien, Real Stories of the Highway Patrol, and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers make their television debuts. 3. Tim McGraw, Toby Keith, and Clay Walker released their self-titled debut albums. Austin City Limits in its 18th season on PBS.
DJ was always my driver my entire childhood. I was unfortunately still too young to remember this live cause I was almost 4 but by 1995 late and especially 1996 I started to pay attention and remember and I loved DJ and got to experience an amazing 5 year run. It's amazing this is JGRs first win as well considering how successful they have been since this day.
When I was watching the Coca-Cola 600 you uploaded, UA-cam recommend me the two races of Bristol you also have uploaded, 1991-92. Why not put them in this playlist of classic races as well? Also, thanks for uploading old races, hope it continue even after the 2020 season begins.
The sound of those engines thundering under that CBS camera in one. Thundering On West End facing in direction of Happiest Place on Earth. The Atlantic is off turn four several blocks.
In 1993 Indy 500 yearbook by Hungness it's been written that Al Unser Jr. "crashing out thanks to a nudge from Dale "Ironhead" Earnhardt". It's clearly visible at 2:01:20 that defending Indianapolis 500 champion moved up out of T4.
@@petebentley3156 Bobby Labonte never won the Daytona 500. He likely *would* have won it in 1998 if it didn't end under yellow which gave Dale Sr. the win.
Ned Jarrett did a great job calling the end of the race but I think Darrell Waltrip calling the end of the 2001 500 calling Micheal to the win was the best and then his voice went south.
I always found it curious that Neil Bonnett was describing the Rusty Wallace flip as if it were a blow over. "The air gets underneath the car, inverted wing...up in the air". It just makes me wonder if perhaps Neil didn't have a good view of the crash himself, maybe watching it on some crappy little monitor? Obviously this was no blow over. When the car got sideways it just dug in and the momentum sent it over. Neil certainly knew a blow over from a non-blow over, so I have to conclude he was working with limited info here.

Earnhardt wrecks Al Unser and Bobby Hillin and Kyle Petty end up fighting with each other. I guess Kyle was frustrated because this was the best car he ever had at Daytona and there best chance he ever had, or ever would have, to win it. Unfortunately, it was the only time Al Junior would ever race in NASCAR. He showed here he could have had success, like AJ Foyt did, but he never got another chance. You'd think when he went to race for Penske in IndyCars, Roger could have given him a few rides with his Winston Cup team, but it never happened, and then he started having his personal troubles (alcohol related) that shortened his racing career. Too bad.
Earnhardt didnt wreck unser. That was unser's lack of experience not keeping it down in the middle lane coming off of 4 and earnhardt let the nose of his car get into unser. Unser must have missed the memo that dale never gave an inch.
@@ryanith2 Earnhardt fans always have their excuses. He never wrecked anybody. They just crashed around him by coincidence. Anyway, I'm sure Unser's lack of experience had something to do with it, but he'd won in so-called stock cars in IROC against NASCAR guys on NASCAR tracks, including Daytona and Talladega, where Indy Cars didn't race. So it's too bad we didn't get to see more of him in regular NASCAR races, as we did with AJ Foyt.
Actually, Al, Jr. might very well have driven in more NASCAR races if he hadn't signed with Penske for 1994, because Penske had bad experiences with several drivers that ran multiple disciplines back in the 1970s, which is why you never see any of his drivers cross over to and from NASCAR, even now. For instance, Peter Revson was going to drive Penske's #68 car in the 1974 Indianapolis 500 after Mark Donohue retired (and would have been one of the heavy favorites, given that Mike Hiss qualified that car on the front row at Indy), but he was killed in South Africa. Then later that year came Gary Bettenhausen's sprint car crash when he was driving for Penske in both IndyCar and NASCAR. That resulted in Bettenhausen being let go and being replaced by Bobby Allison, who also drove the three 500-mile IndyCar races in 1975. How did Allison's tenure with Penske end? By getting injured in a modified race late in 1976. One other thing about how Al, Jr. and Bobby Hillin, Jr. being eliminated in that crash on lap 157 that many people don't realize is that Al Unser, Sr. drove for Bobby Hillin, Sr.'s Longhorn Racing team from 1980-'82, and the Longhorn Racing cars may have been the worst cars Al, Sr. ever drove in IndyCar racing, and yet, he had two top five finishes in 500 mile races in 1982.

Davey Allison and Alan Kulwicki’s last Daytona 500. This was the first race I got to see flag to flag. 1993 was a tough year.
