Yeah man, a comic truly cant be adapted on the small or big screen, on the account of the limitations of reality. But sin city is probably the only true to the source comic book movie there is... OK watchmen too :d
Frank Miller certainly deserves all his success and is one of the greatest names of the industry. that said, he`s definitely not the father of noir comics, that title, if anyone can claim it, should go to the great Will Eisner. So much so that even Frank Miller himself tried (and unfortunately failed miserably) to adapt some of Eisner works. although an argument could be made that Eisner set the foundation to the Noir style itself in all mediums, making him the Grandfather of it... I dunno... im not a comic historian or a semiotics specialist...
Good points about "the Spirit" but in fact Eisner created the Graphic Novel as a genre--coined the term even. The origins of "noir" go back to film, "film noir" as it were. And the roots of that genre can be traced to German Expressionist Cinema. Long before "the Spirit"
Noir was a progressive offshoot of German Expressionist art and you could see the influence in early Bat-Man comics. Especially one with the first Clayface Basil Karlo.
I was a bit desapointed to not have a reference to Will Eisner in this biography :o Eisner is a god of comics from the 50s as well as Miller is a god of comics from the 90s. And it is known Millers admiration to Eisner. But it was a good surprise to have this Bio. :)
Speaking of Elektra, I was stationed in Germany in the 80s. Once a month, i'd take my ass to the military bookstore and buy every Spider-Man edition. It was during this time that I became a big fan of Daredevil because of Miller. The month in which Elektra was killed by Bullseye, I arrived at the bookstore early; however, all copies were sold out and I've never seen that edition. PS: Mr Miller, you'd be very proud of Netflix's Daredevil. It's spot on and very much in time with your vision.
Wow!!! Extrmeley motivating story. Captured super well as always! Miller is what happens when one holds their ground. Really respect his artistic integrity as well. Other artists should really look at this within themselves. Too many get too comfortable being told how to do their thing.
Thanks for this. I have heard of Frank Miller but didn't know much about him. I used to read comics as a kid, mainly to annoy by brother because my mom made him share. I read anything I could get my hands on Stephen King and Dean Koontz and when I read Daredevil it was like I was reading Dean Koontz with all the angst and conflicted feelings of right and wrong that you just didn't get from Spiderman and Xmen. I always remember Daredevil as a favorite. Now knowing what drove Miller it adds an extra layer. So thank you for that
You glossed over three things... 1) The controversial 'All Star Batman' comic series for DC.... 2) His turn as film director for 'The Spirit' movie... and 3) The studio pulling the plug on his 'Buck Rodgers' film project... All that being said, I would greatly appreciate a Bio on Will Eisner please.
Excellent if brief review. Frank Miller is not only one the greatest modern comic authors but also a very competent movie script author (Robocop 2...) and a profound believer in the freedom of speech within comics (supporter of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund). That being said, a lot of other comic authors, illustrators and artists should be featured here.
Hellboy smokin' Met him at a portfolio review event at a comic convention once. I asked him about the sudden tonal shift people were gossiping about at the time in DKII. I never felt the shift but I wanted to get his take on it. He went off on some full blown 911-Truther stuff that made Loose Change 1st Edition seem reasonable and well researched by comparison. The entire time his eyes looked as tho he thought I might be George W Bush in disguise.
Charlie Cox really has done an outstanding job in many regard for the Netflix DAREDEVIL series... though the same can't be said for all of the rest of the cast...
Growing up, I was a fan of Frank Miller. But i havent seen him do anything good after the 1990's. It prolly has to do with his numerous health problems. The poor guys brain is deteriorating. Like look at him. He looks like the goddamn Crypt Keeper. Heck. Even Neil Adams, who is 16 years older than Frank Miller, now looks like his junior.

I dunno, while I usually wouldn't describe your portrayals as 'puff-pieces' this one I sort of would. There's quite a number of controversies surrounding Frank Miller you don't touch on whatsoever - from his alcoholism to the sexism & racism in his more recent works... While the Dark Knight was an undeniable classic he would later make two sequels, each with their own controversies (Batman & Robin hook-up (ugh), a 2nd writer was required to assist him). Sin City's always had mixed reactions, some quite negative - the content slowly nose-dives into really bizarre and inappropriate territory as it progresses. '300' took some creative liberties but also took a number of socio-political ones as well, depicting the Persians almost entirely as 'bad guys'. As a fan of Miller's since the 80's I completely respect the guy's earlier work & his massive contribution to the direction that comics took as a whole. But over time his choice of content, the way he portrayed women, etc became more and more questionable, even for 'edgy' content. Any recent interview of him that I've seen hasn't been very flattering, as he almost always appears completely intoxicated. Maybe he's cleaned up his act recently, that would be great news. Also it's a shame you didn't mention a few of his other seminal works: the Daredevil 'Born Again' arc, where the Kingpin discovers DD's secret identity; the 'Electra: Assassin' mini-series; or 'Batman: Year 1' a re-imagining of Bruce Wayne's first year as a crimefighter.
Don’t like him anymore since his far right comments against demonstrators in NY couple of years ago. Actually they sounded quite fascist to me. Disappointed of this Bio research...

I really like this one, though I'm not too familiar with him after learning a little bit and looking him up I do like his general style and already liked a few of his works without really knowing it. Good episode as usual :) could you possibly do any female soon? It's literally been 27 videos with zero women in a row.
Who though? Just asking for a female seems a little insufficient. Also I hope u don’t find the fact that it’s been 27 videos since there was a female. Usually they go off of popular comment requests anyways.
Brilliant! Video. When I saw what the topic was I was worried it wasnt going to be that interesting, but that is one of the best in months! Superb video!
Yes! Miller and Bill Sienkiewicz in Daredevil and Electra comics and graphic novels was brilliant!! I remember pouring over those when I was a teenager. Influenced me to want to make my own comics! 30 years later I finally published my first illustrated novel (not quite a comic book but comic style drawings) last year 2019 on amazon. Called Mekonnen: The Warrior of Light.
The 2008 movie wasn't an adaptation of The Dark Knight Returns. The film drew a few ideas from it, as well as some other Batman stories, such as The Killing Joke, but it has its own self-sufficient story.
Aside from Batman, Daredevil, Sin city and 300.. Frank Miller also drew the very first Wolverine 4 issue solo mini series with Chris Claremont as writer.. helping give Wolverine more depth to his character
Joe Orlando feeling real stupid when Miller went and created the Daredevil we know today. Even more when Miller made the greatest piece of comic art ever published: the Dark Knight Returns.
More comic book writers and artists: Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, Larry Lieber, Geoff Johns, Gail Simone, Robert Venditti, Marv Wolfman, George Perez, Neil Gaiman, Alan Moore, Jim Lee, Kevin Smith, Charles Soule, Todd McFarlane, Greg Capullo, Dave Gibbons, Greg Rucka, Joss Whedon, J.M DeMatteis, Ross Andru, Jim Aparo, Jim Starlin, Warren Ellis, Jonathan Hickman, John Bryne, Mark Waid, Ed Brubaker, Alan Davis, Christopher Yost, Scott Lobdell, Brain Michael Bendis, Grant Morrison, Peter David and finally Chris Claremont. It would be great if you could do these writers/artists from time to time. Maybe 1 video on these writers/artists per week? Anyways, love your videos! So much great content! 👍

I am really enjoying many and varied videos on this channel, and I hate to be, well, That Guy, but...1. Almost none of the Daredevil and Elektra images here are Miller's work, and Christopher Nolan's 'The Dark Knight' is not an adaptation of 'The Dark Knight Returns.' This is, of course, fanboyish nitpicking on my part; please keep up the great work!
I don't think Miller was "The Father" of comic-book Noir. There was an Argentine comic book called "Ernir Pike" back in the 50's that was ridiculously dark, then of course, there's "Metal Huirlant"(Heavy Metal) which was often so dark it blotted out the sun. But I do give Miller props for his advances in darkening the silliness of the late 70's and early 80's.

My comment is that many artists like Frank Miller were inspired by often uncredited artists/writers. Batman, for example...you always hear about Bob Kane. Bill Finger, not so much.
FYI I believe Lynn Varley was his colorist not his inker , Frank inked a lot of stuff himself except for his collaborations with Klaus Janson . good video!!
This makes Miller seem like such a tragic figure, as he's kinda gone insane and turned into both a horrible artist and not a very nice person. For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, check out some of the Miller Time reviews from the UA-cam channel Linkara Atop the 4th Wall. He looks at some of Millers most infamous works, including his worst work Holy Terror. Check it out if you want to see how this guy, who sounds amazing, turned into someone much less so.
I used to always look at Norman Rockwell paintings while my grandfather and I talked for hours at Hometown Buffet in Vacaville before it closed down. I miss the Coffee Tree too.
Anyone who has ever met Frank Miller knows you forgot one very important detail. I’m a huge fan since the 1980’s but it should be mentioned that the man is fucking batshit crazy.
I love Daredevil, Electra and old Batman, they are like light in the dark world, and they are ultimate cynics. Sin City...one of the best movies I watched. Now when I know that cartoon writer was an important part of creating, all black-white and color when needed find there's meaning. I wish him good health and creating ideas, so he can intrigue us in future.
Please do Rohollah Khomeini.... with the new revaluation, he was put in place by The West as they knew the Shah was finished and they feared a communist revolution in Iran most of all. An Islamic extremist would be better than a Soviet alliance as was its neighboor, Afghanistan. We don’t know about this enough as Iran is in isolation and we are fed terrible propaganda. Cheers
Miller is a storyteller first and foremost. The current crop of comic book "artists" would be wise to set aside their agenda driven books and let the "social message" be revealed organically through proper storytelling and character development.
for anyone interested there is a really good full length doc about DKR with interviews with miller, janson and grant morrison on youtube. hardly any views, cant remember the title but a keyword search should bring it up
MIller took alot from Will Eisner (see his Daredevil run) and did great stuff in 80s but he went off the rails after 9/11. Sort of a meathead type artist.
Just noticed that 7 of the first 9 comments are requests for other biographies. No one wants to discuss this biography?

Jack Kirby!

Frank Miller went to my high school and wrote a comic strip for the school newspaper. I've got a few of the issues.
The real one with issues is Mr. Miller himself
How about one about Simon Whistler himself?

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING as usual... Simon, why do you live in the Czech republic ? Is it for their beer ?
As a Vermonter, I’m happy to see one of us who achieved greatness.
for anyone interested there is a really good full length doc about DKR with interviews with miller, janson and grant morrison on youtube. hardly any views, cant remember the title but a keyword search should bring it up
Why was he named Frank?
What compelled him to wear shoes?
What did he think of the ending of St.Elsewhere?
Sadly Frank Miller lost his mind post 9/11 and now we got works like ASBAR (Crazy Steve) Holy Terror, etc.
MIller took alot from Will Eisner (see his Daredevil run) and did great stuff in 80s but he went off the rails after 9/11. Sort of a meathead type artist.
