What's weird is that I've never seen the engineer, but I've always imagined him to look exactly as you've depicted him, with the glasses and the moustache.
“Losing it?” I wouldn’t say so. He was getting a little pissy in a passive aggressive way, but he didn’t come anywhere close to losing it. He didn’t even raise his voice or insult the guy.
@@obscureentertainment8303 I completely understand Shatner's point as well, the director was being dumb and unprofessional. But with that said, Shatner was in fact being incredibly passive aggressive, combative and mocking. Like, after he did the take following the line read it was pretty clear that the director had gotten the point and was willing to ease off and just let him do his thing, but Jesus Christ Shatner just couldn't let it go. He knew what he was doing.
I have a feeling he was booked for a long session by an ad agency and probably recorded a bunch of different radio spots back-to-back and this is near the end. Working with Engineers is probably like working with Computer Programmers -- they're a special class of asshole that loves its own farts and can't understand why you don't too.
I don't really see the issue. I think the techie dude was rightfully after a little more energy than the first line read. He got it in the second. Then the techie foolishly fell into Mr Shatners trap. Or did he? Mr Shatner was also being very clear that he was providing what was being requested. He wasn't rude. He didn't swear. He didn't raise his voice. Was there a edge of condescension?... Perhaps. The techie dudes panic was pretty hilarious though 😂
Shatner was in the right the whole time. Director didn't actually know what he wanted, other than to be William Shatners Boss for a used car commercial. Shatner did exactly as he was directed to do, imitating the directors tone perfectly. But the director clearly started backpedalling after he realized he forgot WHO THE HELL HE WAS TALKING TO. Shatner needs no Vocal Direction. I will say though, I'm OK with the Director when he asked for a little more excitement. But the example the director tried to pull off...was robotic. But that's exactly what Shatner did. He did what the Director said, and Showed. To a T. Director did not know how he sounded until Shatner mimicked him. He actually thought Bill was making up the tone, to mock him, but it's ACTUALLY how Director boy sounded. Shatner is Brilliant. He figured all of that out in a nanosecond, because it's likely not the first time a much younger than he, Director, was just a little out of depth. It's like trying to tell David Attenborough how to narrate Nature Videos, after he's done it for 100 years already. Granted, Shatner likely wanted to do it all in one take and eff off. He's Captain Freakin Kirk. He has that privilege. People will be doing impressions of him for centuries. Edit: just thought of this 2 minutes after I posted, but...this Incident, would have actually been the perfect time and place for Shatner to have said "you do know who I am right?" But he is too intellectual. Instead he taught the boy a lesson and humbled him, all while being 100% professional and not once raising his voice, calling him names, demeaning or insulting him. Fkn class Act Bill. Awesome.

@@drmoonrat I'm a musician, so my ears are trained for things like that... I hear things that most people can't hear. His modern voice almost has a patronizing tone to it, which may be the reason people thought he was such a jerk for so many years.
I can answer it as both someone with a good ear for audio and a massive Star Trek and relatively big Shatner fan and the answer is multi-faceted. The first part of the answer is that the audio mixing you hear in Star Trek TOS’ dialogue lines is a bit degraded over time and based on a 1990’s double mixing audio track made for syndication purposes when TV’s started to move to Stereo towards the 2000’s, this notably had an effect on a lot of older movies and TV shows where the Voice Lines were higher pitched and often spoke faster than one is used to, hence the “Fast Talking Detective in an old timey detective movie” trope used in parodies. Shatner’s voice in the original mono track of the episodes in question (which was released as an optional selection on the Blu-Rays) has Shatner’s voice be in a much more comparable to today’s vocal tone if you heard him speak. Another reason for his lack of snappiness is that, the version of Kirk he is playing in the films is different than the version of Kirk in the show, who in the show was a still spry; Early thirties adventurous starship captain who had a devil may care attitude to the potential negatives he had displayed in his travels where as in the movies Kirk was depicted more as a veteran who maybe harbors some depression or regret with some of the choices he he made in his career so naturally any good actor should portray that aspect in their voice as much as they do in the script. But you do get that snappiness back from time to time in shows like Boston Legal or T.J. Hooker where his “Kirk Voice” as it were comes back.
So the client *pays* for a celebrity endorsement. They *want* Shatner to be Shatner. So Shatner comes to deliver and a technician, probably a rookie, interjects himself, and proceeds to display his ignorance. Shatner proceeds to do the technician and future talent a favor and show how him how it's done and discipline him with humiliation. Bravo!
I am certainly not famous, but I have done voiceover, narration, and video interviews in my career. I have had instances like this. A producer or Director insists that you say something the way they think you should say it. It can get very frustrating and very uncomfortable.
I would say this that Possibly Kirk should have realized the guy was a moron and not castrated him. The guys life is likely destroyed. things like this can end in a suicide
I think the first take was better overall, but the way he said "Shatner" on the first take was off. I think the director correctly noted that something was wrong at the beginning of the read, but had completely insufficient experience to articulate the problem correctly. It's why Shatner started laughing right away. "Do it again with more energy" is some of the hackiest direction a person can give, especially for some dumb cooperate copy, and it's a obvious tell he is dealing with a total amateur that just wants to insert himself in the process. And Shatner doesn't want to stand there all day doing reads over and over for a guy who can't give direction because he isn't go to add anything that would actually help the end product. It's a bit like a couch potato calling out the starting QB for a bad throw. He's probably right, but that doesn't mean he has the expertise to direct the player to throw a perfect spiral. It's better to not try to tell Aaron Rogers how to pass until you really know exactly what you're talking about.
The director can’t direct. When Shatner says, then do it for me, he should have said, I can give you my thoughts, I can’t do it for you. I would like to hear your interpretation of being a little more animated. Actually doing a demonstration was an amateur move.
I met Shat once and he was super kind and charming. He even offered me a fist bump. I found him to be a great guy.

Hahaha me TOO! I have no idea what he actually looked like but I searched for a face like this that matched what I pictured haha
I pictured him to look like Howard Stern
pretty sure that is JD from the Howard Stern show
“Losing it?”
I wouldn’t say so. He was getting a little pissy in a passive aggressive way, but he didn’t come anywhere close to losing it. He didn’t even raise his voice or insult the guy.
Shatner said, "If your mouth were open, you'd have popped some pills in 'em."
That's a pretty good insult in my opinion! 😂
Hilarious! The eyes thing is killing me! LOL! 😂 😆
I could watch a ton of these, man these are good!
This is hilarious. Even funnier with the graphics. LOL!
Perfect example of how you can legally and politely talk some one into a suicide.
😂 The engineers panic is amazing
I mean... Shatner was so offended they asked for a second take he ordered the director to do a line-read and then started mocking him for it...
As an actor with experience in voice over work, i completely understand Shatner's point. He isn't mocking the guy.

Anyone know what changed his voice after Star Trek: TOS? He doesn't sound the same as back then.
@@TheKitchenerLeslie Just age I think. Star Trek was almost 60 years ago
@@drmoonrat I don't mean now. His voice has been this way since the 70s. It has this smoothness, rather than the brassiness he had in the show.
